Turns out the Fedora 29 distro installed version of Ant is missing an ant
utility package. It was easily installed and now it compiles and runs..

My last
I did not see any issue building from the zipped sources either (as opposed
to the master branch of the incubator-netbeans git repo). I suggest
confirming you have correct/required ant and Java versions available as
documented in the README.

FWIW
I am on the master branch of incubator-netbeans and the build via ant with
no params as you have noted works OK for me on my Mac Air.
Ant and Java versions:
Carls-Air:incubator-netbeans moscac$ ant -version
Apache Ant(TM) version 1.10.5 compiled on July 10 2018
Please report which Ant version you are using. And if it's an Ant from
Apache or some repackaged version in your OS distro.
