Re: Drop support for OSX 10.4 and 10.5 for AOO 4.1

There are some good points for the proposal: - the latest update of OSX 10.4 was in 2007 and Apple dropped support for it in May 2011 - the latest update of OSX 10.5 was in 2009 and Apple dropped support for it in July 2012 - Mozilla stopped releasing for them after FireFox 16 - Google stopped releasing for them after Chrome 22 - Microsoft stopped releasing for them after MSO 2011 - Adobe stopped releasing for them in 2012 - Oracle only provides Java for OSX 10.6 and up - Adium stopped releasing for them after Adium 1.4.5 - etc. It sounds reasonable to drop these OSXs for AOO 4.1 and I would second the proposal. But it's not a good style to drop an OS within a minor update. - we dropped support for OSX PPC with AOO 3.4 - Apple routinely drops support for older platforms in minor version numbers of OSX - Mozilla eliminated minor version numbers for functionality-changing releases - Google Chrome never released minor versions Of course we could do the Solaris trick (calling Solaris 2.6 as Solaris 6) or Java trick (calling JRE 1.7 as Java 7) and rename our AOO 4.1 as AOO 41. FWFIW JRE 1.7 is the first version that doesn't support OSX 10.4 or 10.5 either. Regarding naming I'd prefer a naming scheme of AOO 2013 better anyway. This could also avoid version number races where coopetitors feel that they are forced to one-up major release numbers even if their functionality or UI changes are minor... What are the big changes in AOO 4.1 compared to 4.0 that we can't support these OSXs any longer? Switching to an XCode4 development environment, switching to 64bit only builds, supporting JRE 1.7 and replacing plenty of APIs that are long deprecated with their modern counterparts makes development easier. We should have done that for AOO 4.0. We should have done much more for AOO 4.0: There are many untranslated languages, there are many important platforms and there are document formats that we don't support yet. There are many open bugs and a lot of enhancements and features are not implemented, some are not even ready to implement. But if we had waited until every one of these items was resolved to perfection we wouldn't have had a release this year (or next) though. But with AOO 4.0 as it is even if we still have users of AOO 4.0 on OSX Tiger (OSX 10.4) or Leopard (OSX 10.4) they have now a modern office with the wonderful sidebar. They cannot get any Apple updates and they cannot get a recent Java, a recenct FireFox, a recent Chrome or a recent Opera. But we provided our latest and greatest offering with all its wonderful enhancements and fixes. I don't think there is much reason to complain. BasicAddonBuilder - problem (addon.xcu?) in AOO 4.0
Hello, The toolbar does not properly registered when installing the Basic Addon Builder (0.5.0)? That is, it is not possible to display the toolbar of Basic Addon Builder after installation. Forum vm reconfiguration.
Hi. As of the time of this mail, the forum vm has been reconfigured to cope with a higher load. This is just a very limited reconfiguration (max_connections=75), and I will over the next days do the following: - include all changes in backup (today phpBB changes are not in svn/backup) - adjust httpd worker threads, and calculate the needed max_connections - make a test setup of phpBB - convert myIsam table to innodb - maybe upgrade to mysql 5.6 (depends on input from arist) - add office 4.0 signature (depends on input from andrea, or anybody with phpBB knowledge) - Run peak perfomance testing. Please use this thread to report outages, sql errors and if its slower than a snail (please compare to a danish snail, they are especially slow). rgds jan I.

I'm renaming this subthread, since we all agree on the 4.0.1 proposal in itself and discussions are only on the Pootle update now. I see in Pootle that the project names, after the discussion here, now follow the same pattern of 4.0.0: aoo401 and aoo401help: perfect. The point where I and Juergen disagree is how many languages should be available in Pootle. My deepest concern is that we don't waste the translators' time and that we are prepared to receive help immediately. So, for me, now is the time for importing everything from SDF to Pootle: we still have at least three languages (sr, sh, bg) where volunteers have been waiting for more than one week for us to put 4.0.0 in Pootle. Juergen, how can we guarantee that this is not the bottleneck if we don't import everything now? As for creating Pootle accounts, I usually create them within 24 hours, which is fine. But creating a Pootle project (a new language) looks more complex and more critical. by simply having a few more people having the necessary rights to access the machine and doing the work directly. These people would also need to understand the pootle setup, since root access is needed. I will not recommend have extra root people on the vm, but if really needed we could change ownership of the po files so the vm-team can do the po commands. Having all languages there requires even more maintenance work over time that I am not willing to spend if there is no active community You see something that I overlook, please enlighten me. Apart from the initial work (which have to be done at some point anyhow), I see our running maintenance as: - Maintain mysql, httpd and pootle (that is done by me alone today, and I dont need extra help) - Restart pootle in case of problems (that is done by vm-team, in total 5 people, that should be enough) - Run pootle refresh_stat regulary (done by me, and with my current experience I will put it in crontab) - Run pootle sync to update the po files for backup (currently only done by you, but I will be happy to put that in crontab as well, and btw 1 cmd, not 1 pr language). well I run it via script on a set of languages ;-) When we want to build for a release, there are a couple of extra issues: - Convert po files back to sdf (currently done by you, but that would only affect the languages we actually build, so no difference from today). that will go away in the future hopefully The only real extra work is when there are new strings: - Convert sdf files with templates to po files for each language. This is real extra work, but I have proposed to do it this time, and I hope to have genLang ready for 4.1, so we can skip the conversion. exactly and this is work that I don't want to do at the moment for inactive languages. But I am fine with adding all languages when the process uses po files directly and more things can be automated. OK juergen I understand you now, and agree with your opion lets close this thread. summarize: Apache 4.x is available (and now even faster) for continued work by all translators If anybody want to work on a language we do not have on pootle but in sdf it will be added (let try to be as fast as andrea) in 24 hours (send me a private mail with the exact cmds you use, then we are 2 that can do the job). if anybody want to work on a language not available in pootle or sdf, it must be discussed first on this list, since it involves more work. Translators should use expand details in main view, and check the alerts pootle issues, it is quite good at catching translation mistakes. aooGenLang is a project for test purpose, please do not use it. I will (after 72 hours) remove the 3.4 projects from pootle (and po directory). rgds jan I Juergen What extra work am I missing ? I stopped to add languages more or less when we started the 4.0.1 discussion ... You will notice that initial 4.x projects use of course 4.x and not 4.0. My understanding is that only the sdf files in svn count and Pootle is just a tool. And in future the po files in svn counts instead of. I don't think they have to be in sync. But anyway if people want to have the overhead I am fine as long as I don't have to do the work. I agree that svn is the source, and pootle is only a tool, but in the future the po directory will be

OS/2: landscape printing broken
Hi, Printing of documents in landscape mode worked correctly until version 3.2 Now something changed and AOO defaults to print in portrait mode unless I manually change printer properties to landscape. This problem was already present in my 3.4 dev builds. I see that when OS2SalInfoPrinter::SetData() is called, the orientation is always portrait (0). Even the print preview is always portrait (until printer properties are changed). I think I miss some code added to change printer properties on the fly using document settings. I suggest we drop support for OSX 10.4 and 10.5 for Apache OpenOffice 4.1. Herbert Thanks Herbert for your explainations, I think it's reasonable to drop it with OO 4.1. If anybody want to work on a language we do not have on pootle but in sdf it will be added (let try to be as fast as andrea) in 24 hours Great, of course this is not a hard requirement but let's do our best to be responsive when new volunteers show up. if anybody want to work on a language not available in pootle or sdf, it must be discussed first on this list, since it involves more work. Understandable, no problems with additional delays in this case (and note that it involves also a lot of work outside Pootle in the worst case, i.e., when the language is not one of those listed for example in Format - Character). I will (after 72 hours) remove the 3.4 projects from pootle (and po directory). +1 from me, with the provision that the work being done, for example, in https://translate.apache.org/th/OOo_34/ is kept in https://translate.apache.org/th/aoo40/ (but it seems this has already been done, and I don't see any 3.4 projects with a lot of recent work). [discuss] Forum maintenance, scheduled downtime
Hi. We have now reconfigured mysql, and arist has optimized all myisam tables, so now it actually runs pretty good. BUT I would still loke to do updates, so the vm enters a maintainable status, with good stable versions. In order to that I need to schedule downtime. We had a long discussion in infra, and it is not possible to do a parallel vm, due to the size of this vm, so we have to do inline (of course with backups etc). Jira https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-6652 tracks this issue. The downtime will be in 3 blocks: 1) Patch mysql 5.1 to highest 5.1 patch level This is needed to convert tables to innodb. Approx. downtime: 2-3 hours when: a.s.a.p. 2) update ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and add puppet with security measured (standard infra) Approx. downtime 1 day When: next weekend 3) Update mysql to 5.6 and upgrade db. Approx. downtime 1 day When: next weekend. Any thought about this ? If anybody is strict against it, with a good reason, please give it a -1. rgds jan I.

Sure, but let's take the occasion to understand if we need someone else with full privileges on the PHPBB application (i.e., no shell access but full administration of the forum). If one of the regulars who post here about the forum is willing to take up this role (in addition to you), I'd be all for it, since they know and use the application better than, for example, you and me.
