RE: Reported Calc problem with large files

2015-11-10 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
The problem of large, multiple Calc documents open at once is also showing
up on the Bugzilla.

Finally, I have personally noticed cross-talk of some kind when multiple
documents are being worked on in AOO. That is, changes made in one impact
the other one I am working on. Not that the document is damaged but weird
things happen, e.g., with searching and navigating and viewing. That was a
while ago when I had some heavy document editing and review work going on
and I made no effort to capture whatever it was.

It could be about memory leaking, but I suspect it is more subtle/sinister
than that in how multiple document instances are operated concurrently and
what might be shared in so doing.

 - Dennis

PS: That problems like this are tracked in an incoherent/disconnected manner
between Bugzilla, forums, and lists has me wonder about finding a good place
to bubble up some consolidation of what is happening as details are sorted
out and clear pictures emerge. On a Wiki, perhaps, where there can be a
single point to send users to?

Hi Iraklis

That's great :-).

Is there any areas of OpenOffice that interest you, or that you use often?
It's a large project, and it's hard to know what to suggest you get started
with.

Hopefully I only bring problems to the dev list which might originate from some
fundamental problem in the code; having seen the problem on this list, perhaps
some developer working on the code will have a memory of this problem and reach
an epiphany which will sort the problem.

When creating a new issue (or for an existing one, if you want to choose
a better one), then IMHO the users expect a different sorting.

Therefore I want to improve the list to get the most used systems at top
like the following:

All
Windows, all
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2012
Windows 8, 8.1
Windows 10
Mac OS X, all
Mac OS X, 10.7
Mac OS X, 10.8
Mac OS X, 10.9
Mac OS X, 10.10
Mac OS X, 10.11
Linux, all
Linux 32-bit
Linux 64-bit
Unix, all
Solaris
FreeBSD
OS/2

In my experience (I can't remember the version I tried but it was
almost 1 year ago), the Android port of OpenOffice is anything but usable.
It's an interesting technical demonstration of how a desktop application
can be correctly ported to a mobile platform "as is" , but it lacks all
the mobile interaction users want (and probably need) on devices with a
10" touch screen, virtual keyboard and no mouse.

In my organization we're using OpenOffice on (Windows) desktops and
we're still trying hard to find a mobile app we can suggest our users to
download to edit ODF documents.

IMHO, ultimately, the apps that that seemed to work best when editing
ODF documents are the Google apps (Docs, Sheets and Slides). On iOs they
have the limit (well, it's a limit for me!) that they can only open
documents stored on your Google Drive. At least we didnt' find a way to
open, e.g., an ODF attachment to a mail message.
