With the return to physical events, rooms are limited and FOSDEM tries
to rotate projects, so OpenOffice, despite the request we filed,
didn't make the list this year but it might find space again in future.

We should be grateful to the FOSDEM organizers for having offered us a
room for several years, without requesting (or receiving, for that
matter) any money or financial benefit from the Apache OpenOffice
project.

Still, there will be other ASF projects represented in different

No OpenOffice Devroom at FOSDEM 2023

2022-12-30 Thread Andrea Pescetti
You've often seen me spamming this list in the last week of the year in
recent years calling for FOSDEM submissions, but I am not doing it this
time... since there will be no OpenOffice devroom at FOSDEM 2023.

With the return to physical events, rooms are limited and FOSDEM tries
to rotate projects, so OpenOffice, despite the request we filed, didn't
make the list this year but it might find space again in future.

We should be grateful to the FOSDEM organizers for having offered us a
room for several years, without requesting (or receiving, for that
matter) any money or financial benefit from the Apache OpenOffice project.

Still, there will be other ASF projects represented in different
devrooms and possibly an ASF booth too... so there are still reasons to
consider attending FOSDEM

Re: Call for Proposals: Apache OpenOffice Devroom at FOSDEM 2021 (online)

2020-12-28 Thread Andrea Pescetti
Last call: don't be shy! Let's take FOSDEM as an occasion for an overall
"state of the project" where we inform each other on the current status
and ways forward.

All talks will be pre-recorded as Peter wrote, so no problem with
timezones; but after each talk we will have a live "questions and
answers" session for community talk.

Suggestions of what could be added for a more complete schedule (I won't
add names, but if you recognize yourself in the description please go
ahead and file a proposal immediately, as the schedule will need to be
defined on 31 Dec; see https://s.apache.org/openoffice-fosdem-2021-cfp
for details).

- Releases: How we do them, possible improvements, what's coming in 4.2.0

- Recruitment: ideas on how to improve it

- History of a first contribution (issues with documentation, with first
build, filing patches)

- Build system migration

- MWiki current status

- Reviewing patches on Github: our policies for testing, merging...

- Website migrations away from CMS (I see a proposal by Dave, but I read
it as an overview of our ancillary sites, not the two that were moved
away from the CMS; the migration itself would be an interesting topic
for another presentation).

- whatever you feel presenting; and no problem if it is more questions
than answers.

Important: please make sure you file your presentation/event in the
"Apache OpenOffice" track, as otherwise it will be easy for us to miss
it when preparing the final schedule.

Answering to Matthias below:

Wouldn't it be useful to have a link to the CfP also here:
https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/tracks/

Yes, I sent it to FOSDEM just a few minutes after sending it here, then
I sent it the week after that... but apparently it was stuck in some
anti-spam filter until I let them notice again and then they published
the link. They fixed it about two weeks ago.

Hi Andrea,

Wouldn't it be useful to have a link to the CfP also here:

Like the other Dev rooms did it?

2020-12-11 Thread Peter Kovacs

Hi all,

I have also entered a lecture. I would like to try if we can use the
event to proceed to use as a public think tank.

The talk will be prerecorded, and so I can focus on the discussion with
interested folks.

Title: The future of Base

Here is my abstract:

In this talk I will be talking about base. Base is the Database focused
Application within Apache OpenOffice.
We will start of with a short Description where Base comes from, and
what the Idea behind base has been.

I will sum up discussions that have taken place on development Mailinglist.
And I would like to take some visions up from the previous discussions
and talk a bit about what Base

would needs if we would go into the direction of analytics and big data.

All the Best

Peter

FOSDEM 2021 Apache OpenOffice devroom (online)

2020-11-28 Thread Andrea Pescetti
Good news: FOSDEM organizers decided to allocate an entire day for
Apache OpenOffice next year.

https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/tracks/

It is now tentatively scheduled for February 6th, online, free
attendance; talks will have to be pre-recorded.

I see this as an opportunity for a larger-than-usual gathering, since
it's online and everybody will be able to attend and talk. An own
devroom means an entire day available for Apache OpenOffice talks, so it
will be an occasion for many people to speak and I encourage everybody
to apply (a call for talks is coming by next weekend).

Of course I had restated the availability for a shared Open Document
Editors devroom, but apparently the logistics this year allowed
organizers to give us a dedicated event.

More news as soon as FOSDEM organizers distribute them.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Just a note that, based on the number of submissions, we could have
accommodated a few more (though possibly a bit shorter) talks. I really
can't understand why people do not submit more proposals... The devroom
could have more content and still maintain a good quality level.

The Devroom will run on Saturday 1 February 2020, first day of FOSDEM

The timeslot is not clear now because Peter wants to join and he also
wants to hold a talk at "Open Document Editors" DevRoom.
Accepted speakers will be notified by Sunday, December 8th, 2019.

I will update the cWiki then.

Understood!

My (minor) point was, that it was not only 2016 (as written in cWiki)
but also 2017?

Yes, FOSDEM is really crowded and they have a hard time to please
everyone. This year they introduced tables for a single day, I think?

Re: FOSDEM 2020

2019-11-24 Thread sharanf

Hi Matthias

It's great to hear that you will organise a team for booth. I will add
AOO to the booth list so please add at least one timeslot as I'd really
like to ensure that AOO get some time on the booth.

You are right and It's true that in the past we had a combined booth at
FOSDEM, and in those days we actually had a larger space (with two
tables I think!) so there was enough space to have a table for AOO
including a demo PC. and also for the ASF in general, where other ASF
projects could also come along and spend time.

Over the last few of years the booth space has reduced and now they only
allocate one table which is why we need to be fair to all ASF projects
who would like to get some time on the booth. (BTW during the transition
from two tables to one, each time we applied for a FOSDEM booth for the
ASF, we put in a request for an additional table but were never successful).

Thanks
Sharan

Hi Sharan,

Thanks! We will try to organize a team for AOO. Count me in, but I hope
for others joining.

One (not very important) notice:
I don't know about 2016, but my first FOSDEM was in 2017. And in 2017
you had a combined booth with OpenOffice.

Hi All

I wanted to let you know that a wiki page for FOSDEM has been setup, so if
you'd like to book some time on the ASF booth to promote OpenOffice the link is
below.

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEV/FOSDEM+2020

We are planning for slots of 3-4 hours depending on how many other projects
sign up, so please feel free to add the dates and times that you'd like. We
will finalise the booth schedule nearer the time once we have all the project
requests in.

Thanks
Sharan

Hello,

following the published list

https://fosdem.org/2020/news/2019-11-19-accepted-stands/

our stand request was not accepted.

The Apache Software Foundation does have a stand and OpenOffice is part of the
Foundation. Participation of OpenOffice with that stand can be discussed on
dev@community.a.o.

There will certainly be OpenOffice stickers.

Also there is an Open Document Editors developer room on Saturday.
https://fosdem.org/2020/news/2019-10-01-accepted-developer-rooms/

The Call For Papers is
https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2019q4/002921.html and the deadline
is Nov 30, 2019

But some of us (for example Mechtilde, Matthias, me) will be at FOSDEM
2020, so people can meet us.

On one side I am a little bit disappointed and sad, because a booth at
FOSDEM is a great matter for our project. On the other side I will enjoy
the freedom of irresponsibility (also a little bit) another year.

I am willing to repeat the request next year.

Was the request for OpenOffice or Apache OpenOffice?

Regards,
Dave

Kind regards
Michael

The Apache Software Foundation does have a stand and OpenOffice is part of the
Foundation. Participation of OpenOffice with that stand can be discussed on

There will certainly be OpenOffice stickers.

FOSDEM 2020

2019-11-22 Thread Dr. Michael Stehmann
Hello,

following the published list

https://fosdem.org/2020/news/2019-11-19-accepted-stands/

our stand request was not accepted.

Kind regards

Not "... creating a mature ..." but "... making it a mature ...". You
don't "create" a mature product by starting it 20 years ago, but being
20 years old could (potentially, YMMV) "make" it mature.

If you're going full marketroid, at least don't say "... used a
competitive product" but "... used a *competing* product." (Or even
better, "similar" instead of "competing" to avoid the horrible
marketroiderism.) Saying other products are "competitive" implies that
AOO is not. Perish the thought.

P.S.: Yes, I am extremely allergic to marketspeak, but if you really
want to use it, might as well get it right.

FOSDEM Dev room

2019-09-19 Thread Peter Kovacs
Hello all,

Deadline is today. I am sorry I failed to come up with a proper
application fo this event. Maybe Andrea, can you enter one on the short
notice?

If we get the room I would create a talk and support our dev room, but
it is not primary motivation at the moment.

I think it is much more important that we do active recruiting. And I
want to support this activity. We have so far not managed to bring one
new volunteer into OpenOffice. But I feel that the volunteer rate of
active participants is dropping slowly.

I am sorry on the late moment, I am really feel bad about this,
especially because I promised to Mechtilde to take care of this. :(

All the Best

Peter

Re: FOSDEM 2019: no Open Document Editors devroom?

2018-12-24 Thread Peter Kovacs
I have received now some feedback on Infra. A dump of Bugzilla without
Attachment is still 700 MB.

This are a lot of bugs. Also I had a look at my timing table, and I am
not sure I can prepare the talk until FOSDEM.

Also I think the UNO talk is not really fitting to Open Document
Devroom, so I submitted it as original planned as Fast talk.

Sadly I have no topics on this short notice to talk about, that I find
interesting and fit into my time table.

So I will stick to my original plan. I am sorry.

2018-12-21 Thread Peter Kovacs
This is a real surprise. Full +1 on your actions Andrea. I would have
been fine with just visiting.

I will try to put one topic together then for FOSDEM, but 24th is a
little of short notice. Also I have already planned my time different.

Currently I have 2 planned projects that could modified into FOSDEM talks.

1) The UNO-Project would focus around the question the benefit of
separating the UNO - Framework in an own Project.

2) Analysis on the Bug tracker. I have planned to focus around Questions
like

How can we deal with the 3K unconfined and 10K confirmed issues? Is
there a way to improve the Clustering in the Bug tracker?

How old are our Bugs? How many Support request do we get in Bugzilla?
Which Bugs have never been looked at?

How are we doing on the Bugtracker?

And so on. I have no clue what other Questions will come to my mind. And
not all are good for a FOSDEM Presentation.

Anyone with other Ideas that can be done? - If we work together maybe we
can bring out 1 or 2 Talks. I volunteer if you need a speaker.

What I would like to do, but that I have no time for is OpenOffice
Architecture, where we are where to go. But I am sure I will not manage
this until February.

Maybe 2020.

Re: FOSDEM 2019: UNO Project as an Idea for Main track or fast talk? (was: FOSDEM 2019: no Open Document Editors devroom?)

2018-10-17 Thread Damjan Jovanovic
Not directly. An UNO wrapper could be written to access the ODF toolkit
from other UNO languages (C++, Python, (old) Javascript, StarBasic, OLE
automation). Those languages would have to run in an UNO environment
though. Other approaches to interoperability do exist; UNO's advantage is
good performance when running in-process, and the possibility of network
transparency.

Our UNO implementation does need some maintenance, for example we have no
Win64 UNO bridge (main/bridges), and it's not easy to develop: AMD64
assembly language, and binary internals of Windows's calling convention,
C++ exception handling and RTTI...

Also UNO is pretty heavy, my estimate is around 30 binaries and 30 MB in
size, possibly more.

FOSDEM 2019 Booth Request for OpenOffice

2018-10-16 Thread Peter Kovacs
Hello all,

I do not find my last approach. So Lets start a new run.

I rewrote the argumentation to maybe now better Ideas. Please help to
finish this.

So the draft looks currently like this:

  Project Name

Apache OpenOffice

  Description of project(s) for publication:

Apache OpenOffice™ is the free and open productivity suite from the
Apache Software Foundation <https://www.apache.org/>.

Apache OpenOffice <https://www.openoffice.org/> features six personal
productivity applications: a word processor (and its web-authoring
component), spreadsheet, presentation graphics, drawing, equation
editor, and database. OpenOffice is released on Windows, Linux and
macOS, with more communities joining, including ports for FreeBSD and
OS/2. OpenOffice is localized, supporting over 110 languages worldwide.

OpenOffice.org was donated
<http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/statements-on-openofficeorg-contribution-to-apache-nasdaq-orcl-1521400.htm>
to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) on June 1, 2011. As with any
code base brought to the ASF, OpenOffice.org underwent incubation before
graduating
<https://blogs.apache.org/OOo/entry/openoffice_graduates_from_the_apache>
to a top-level project on 2012-10-17.

  Why does it fit FOSDEM?

The Apache OpenOffice™ Project is one of view Projects that have fame
beyond the OpenSource movement. With an average download over 1.9
million copies per month and a peak download after release of
3.244.447.We are a popular project in user space.

We would like to show of the latest progress of our Software, by show
the latest stable and unstable versions. We would like to have some
Discussions with visitors about the Future of OpenOffice, how it could
evolve.

We were not as present on FOSDEM in the Last years, sharing our Booth
with the Apache Foundation. We would like to stand out this year again
in order to start some discussions.

We require one table for our representation of the Project.

Damjan -

A thought - does this UNO project have any synergies with ODF Toolkit? Is it
worth reaching out to Svante Schubert and the ODF Toolkit?

FOSDEM 2019: UNO Project as an Idea for Main track or fast talk? (was: FOSDEM 2019: no Open Document Editors devroom?)

2018-10-16 Thread Peter Kovacs
Hello all

How about the Idea we make a main track to introduce the Idea from
Damjan, to create an own UNO Project.

We would need to explain

# What it does

# Examples of how can it be used.

# what Features and benefits it has.

We could get a first feedback of interest from the audience.

I think this is a good talk for a main track in general.

All the best

Peter

The organizers confirmed that the devroom won't run in 2019, so neither
OpenOffice nor similar programs will get a devroom (i.e., a day-long
conference track, for those unfamiliar with FOSDEM jargon).

It is normal that FOSDEM rotates subjects of their devrooms and we
should be grateful to organizers for having given us a devroom in
several years so far, and possibly in future years beyond 2019.

There is still the opportunity to propose presentations for the

FOSDEM 2019: no Open Document Editors devroom?

2018-10-11 Thread Andrea Pescetti
While I haven't received any feedback from FOSDEM organizers yet (the
two contact addresses I had given were mine and Peter's), I am not
seeing the Open Document Editors devroom listed at
https://fosdem.org/2019/schedule/

This is just to confirm that I did send a request, a couple days before
the deadline, exactly the same way it has worked in the past years.
Usually a similar request was sent by another project and the requests
were merged by organizers to create a shared "Open Document Editors"
devroom.

If organizers have decided not to host an "Open Document Editors"
devroom this year, we should just respect them; they need to rotate
projects, so after a few years in a row it is understandable if they
decided to pick other types of software. I'm not into political games
and I'm uninterested in discussing why (so far at least) FOSDEM decided
that OpenOffice and similar software should not get a devroom this year.

If I get some official acceptance/rejection notice I will of course
inform the list.

Here's the receipt of the application I sent last month, very similar to
those from previous years that you can find in the list archives.

Devroom Request for FOSDEM 2019

We acknowledge that we have received your request for the following devroom.
After we review all devroom requests, we will inform you accordingly via
email.

Title: Apache OpenOffice [or: joint "ODF Editors" devroom]
Coordinator: Andrea Pescetti
Coordinator email: pescetti@...
Secondary contact: Peter Kovacs
Secondary email: petko@...

Description:
Apache OpenOffice, formerly known as OpenOffice.org, is one of the most
popular Free and Open Source software projects. A Top Level Project at
the Apache Software Foundation since October 2012, OpenOffice has more
than 250 million downloads as an official Apache project. The next
version, OpenOffice 4.1.6, is scheduled for release in October 2018.

Note: A joint "ODF editors" devroom like the one organized at FOSDEM
since 2014 would allow a productive exchange of ideas with other Free
and Open Source editors using OpenDocument as their native format.

As for OpenOffice, topics that may be interesting for FOSDEM 2019
include: modernization of the reference baseline; improvements to the
localization process; tools to assist release management; build
technologies.

Coordinator's affinity to the topic of the devroom:
Andrea, who is sending the application on behalf of the OpenOffice PMC,
served as Chair of the OpenOffice Project Management Committee
(2012-2014) and was the Release Manager of OpenOffice 4.1.2 in 2015.

Why does it fit FOSDEM
An Apache OpenOffice devroom would allow existing volunteers to meet and
discuss future developments, and users and potential new volunteers to
learn how they can help the project, thanks to presentations and hacking
sessions spanning a broad range of topics.

Relevant URLs:
The main project URL is http://www.openoffice.org/

Timeslot:
Full day

Special requirements:
Preferred day: Saturday

Kind Regards,
FOSDEM 2019 devrooms team

keine Zeit hatte, mich dort länger aufzuhalten.

"It was wonderful to meet so many nice people who had just been mailing
list names."

Michael
