Popups on Sourceforge are not Apache OpenOffice responsibility ;)
You can always download directly from the Apache archives if you know which
files to get

Building while SourceForge is down

2018-03-03 Thread Andrea Pescetti
As discussed in https://s.apache.org/sHGE we can't do a clean build
while SourceForge is down, to to the fact that oooextras.mirror (where
we keep some libraries) is unreachable.

I've created a temporary mirror with the files I had locally and with
some more files (especially extensions) that Matthias provided.

In a completely clean build, you will need to:

1) Change your configure options as follows (to get dmake and epm):

./configure
--with-dmake-url=http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/dmake-4.12.tar.bz2
--with-epm-url=http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/epm-3.7.tar.gz
...

2) Change the fallback URL in external_deps.lst as follows:

-OOO_EXTRAS=https://sourceforge.net/projects/oooextras.mirror/files/
+OOO_EXTRAS=http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/

3) Change URLs in extensions.lst as follows:

 # English dictionary
 [ language=en.* || language=de || language=it ]
-f4cb089a1101cc06e49d8bbb2886e5cf
https://sourceforge.net/projects/aoo-extensions/files/17102/38/dict-en-20171101.oxt/download
"dict-en.oxt"
+f4cb089a1101cc06e49d8bbb2886e5cf
http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/aoo-extensions/dict-en.oxt
"dict-en.oxt"

Hopefully the SourceForge outage will be resolved soon, so the above
changes are not worth committing.

Still, once SourceForge comes back we will want to implement a more
complete backup plan, something like the following:

1. An emergency space on an ASF server (possibly password-protected
while it is not in use) that mirrors oooextras.mirror and is regularly
synchronized from it.

2. A refactoring of extensions.lst that makes it possible to switch URLs
more easily

3. A mirror of all bundled extensions (not ALL extensions, just the ones
we bundle), as a subset of the previous mirror

Hopefully, this will allow to build when SourceForge is down (hoping
this means "never"!) by simply changing a couple lines.

Regards,
  Andrea.

openssl-0.9.8zg.tar.gz missing on Sourceforge

2017-11-23 Thread Matthias Seidel
It seems that "openssl-0.9.8zg.tar.gz" is missing on Sourceforge (OOO
Extras):
https://sourceforge.net/projects/oooextras.mirror/files/

The fallback URL defined in "external_deps.lst" points to:
http://www.openssl.org/source/openssl-0.9.8zg.tar.gz

At the moment our Linux buildbots can not build AOO 4.1.5 because of
problems connecting to openssl.org (503 Service Unavailable).

Could one of the admins upload that file to Sourceforge? It should be
hosted there for future use.

Yes, the idea is not to give people another opportunity to block the
release! Just joking of course, but indeed -as you noted- the regression

That's a good way to reduce the time to the official release, but if we

It would be good to include this in the release instructions. After making the

Something has been puzzling me lately. What if this is delliberate?. I
mean, people setting up these "fake AOO" sites and then joining the SF.net

Can an individual project hosted on SF.net, choose to only display adverts
from advertisers that have a long track record of "no problems/complaints"
(a "scoring" if you prefer)? That would be a good way to remove the people
who join the sf.net advertising network with the only purpose to do these
AOO scams and hurt AOO.

Besides the "removal" of offending advertisers, is there any other legal
action that could be taken by the ASF, SF.net, or both? Can we at least
know who they are and publicly shame them? (I suppose if the adverts
networks can pay revenue to them, that they already know who they are and
whom to send the checks to).

Just thinking aloud...

Re: OpenOffice and SourceForge: cruel wedding

2016-01-08 Thread Roberto Galoppini
Thanks for your patience, what follows it's the result of a joint meeting
with our AdOps team and our Managing Director.

Ad Ops has paused the Google Ad Exchange ad serving on SourceForge.net's
Apache Open Office project pages. This will continue while the team
completes our review of the Ad Exchange blocking rules and controls with
the Google team.

Having said that, I wish to share with you all some background information
about the whole process to ban ads and advertisers that are not compliant
with our advertising policies.

Ad Exchange blocking rules are our first tool of control to block
advertising that is non-compliant with company policy. They are quite
effective, though not perfect solutions. Unfortunately when malicious
advertisers find a way to fool the system, they are eventually able to
inject ads that are confusing. Under the Clean Software Alliance umbrella
we're collaborating with them to prevent similar ads to get into the
marketplace, hopefully that would help them to refine their policies and
tools over time.

As a second layer of control, our ad operations department regularly
reviews the advertising from the Ad Exchange and manually removes
advertising and advertisers that bypass the technology controls. They are
at the domain and advertiser-level, and are permanent.

We also have had some success with the community feedback element to our ad
quality process that includes a community feedback form. This has been
helpful for us to improve the timeliness of removing ad violations, but it
needs end-users' input.

With regard to our direct sales and partner advertisers, they remain active
and in full compliance with SourceForge ad quality specifications and
policies, and we never had similar issues with them.

Stay tuned, I will circle back with you next week with more information on
progress with our review of policy and ad quality controls.

Thanks,

Roberto

OpenOffice and SourceForge: cruel wedding

2016-01-07 Thread FR web forum
Hello forum,

There are regularly messages complaining of costly or spammed OpenOffice on the
french forum.
Because end-users don't have ad blocker, Sf.net shows links to para-sites.
The download of the genuine OpenOffice appears delayed, so the user click on
this "fake" OpenOffice.
As for other projets, I think Apache must not accept such situation:

Re: OpenOffice and SourceForge: cruel wedding

2016-01-07 Thread Dave Fisher
The choice to go with sourceforge was not about stats. OpenOffice binaries are
quite substantial. There was concern about if all the Apache mirrors could
handle the load.

Patience! Let's see what Roberto has to say. SourceForge has been generous.

Dave

It's not as simple as that, some evildoers create ad buttons that show the
word "download" or a "play" button (forward triangle).

It should be really easy to fix for SF.net if they wanted:

1. CLEAR MESSAGE in bold text, +2 typeface "Your download will start
automatically, DO NOT CLICK anywhere until it has started".

2. CLEAR separation of the ads and the page information, e.g. 3-pixel thick
line/separator, with the text "ADVERTISING SPACE".

I wonder if anyone from AOO has approached them and requested they
implement something like this?. LEGIT advertisers shouldn't oppose...

[orcmid]

This puts us in the position of playing wack-a-moley and having to watch the
download-started page by requesting downloads just to see what happens. That
we have to do that, and have no clue what another ad rotation will present, is
not practicable.

The main way these come to our attention is when users stumbles into them. By
then, we may not be able to see the offender and users have been abused by the
arrangement.

We must also presume that a very large proportion of the AOO user community
consists of causual, non-expert computer users. I suspect that is an unusual
demographic for SourceForge. I am doubtful that the procedure at
<http://sourceforge.net/p/forge/documentation/Report%20a%20problem%20with%20Ad%20content/>
is particularly comprehensible to the folks that are likely misled by one of
those ads. In particular, most of the complaints we receive are in the belief
that it is AOO that they are dealing with.

We need SourceForge's assistance in finding a way to serve that community well.

> 2. Supporting the Clean Software Alliance guidelines (misleading ads)

[orcmid]
I think the issue at hand is under Misleading ads, item 1.5, about calls to
action not being clearly for the ad and not what the page is about -- an AOO
download having been requested. (I am not quoting because of the restrictions
on the CSA document.)

I believe this could be cured if (1) the "your download will begin... "
material was more prominent and made the focal feature of the page and that (2)
the ads were clearly separated by some sort of "you might also be interested in
these ..." prominently labelled and separated by a clear and emphatic boundary
from the non-advertising content of the page.

[orcmid]
I don't see a problem with those guidelines. I think the issue of
misunderstood ads can be handled on the page where the ads are accepted. One
rule of thumb for the page might be that the non-advertising content and text
be larger than any "download" button and text in an adjoining ad, however that
is assured [;<).

That is exactly why I've added #2: we need Advertising Network Providers
help. We need companies like Google to provide us with a better mouse trap,
until then the only option is the actual post mortem approach.

This is a suggestion you can definitely bring on the table, the SourceForge

The English translation of Philippe's message is:

Hello,
I have a computer with Windows 10.
I wanted to download the new update 4.1.2 but during installation
download directs me to install video converter, without the possibility
of refusing I finally agreed, but downloading this application crashes
and installation stops.
Consequently I can not install the new update due to the imposition of
video converter.

Is it not time to _*SERIOUSLY*_ review the distribution of our binaries
via SourceForge?

Rory O'Farrell and others dutifully expend their valuable time advising
"unaware" users NOT to click on download links and buttons after they
are redirected to the SourceForge mirror page. While commendable, this
is a "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" approach.

No matter what efforts SourceForge make to "weed out" fraudulent and
malware links, our mailing lists and forums continue to receive a steady
stream of download problem messages from "unaware" users.

There is no way to prove this discourages individuals and organizations
from using AOO software, but continuously published reports of AOO
distributing "unwanted" and/or "malware" programs reflects badly on us
and by association the ASF.

I have no personal "gripe" against SourceForge and Roberto Galoppini's
support in this area is invaluable. However, I do not understand, or
find any reasonable explanation, why our download page does not redirect
to the ASF's own mirror network:
https://www.apache.org/mirrors/
where our binaries are already being served by 200+ mirrors around the
world.

RE: SOURCEFORGE [Was: téléchargement version 4.1.2]

2015-11-21 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
[not cross-posting]

SourceForge is valuable to the project for providing the mirror capacity that
AOO requires. The penalty is in regard to user distrust and these awful
situations that the list and Forum folks have to contend with. As far as our
users are concerned, it is the AOO project that is unreliable and has them need
to be so cautious.

Of course SourceForge relies on advertising revenue to offset their costs.
That is to be expected. The problem is the confusion, not the advertising. We
must work with SourceForge to avoid the confusion with regard to ad placement
and prominence.

Andrea has pointed out separately that the alternative mirror system may not be
workable if even available for the demands that AOO downloads represent.

Leaving all the SourceForge discussion aside, one reasonable explanation
for this last question is that the vast majority of Apache mirrors do
NOT mirror OpenOffice: those who do are a minority. I've just tried with
the Italian mirrors and only 2 out of 7 offer OpenOffice. Load balancers
are broken by this incomplete mirroring: even if you try to download the
source package http://openoffice.apache.org/downloads.html you often
have to try multiple mirrors before getting one that works.

In short, the ASF mirror network is not nearly as complete and reliable
as it seems at a first look (besides having other issues such as lack of
stats and lack of unique download URLs).

  Andrea.

With my SourceForge hat on, there are two ways we can jointly work on:

1. Report misleading ads here, following our instructions, see
https://goo.gl/LQFHmE
2. Supporting the Clean Software Alliance guidelines (misleading ads)
https://goo.gl/69XhqW

For #1 I do actively monitor our mailing-list and I make sure SourceForge
removes promptly misleading or unwanted ads.
#2 would actually help to push the whole advertising industry to agree on
more strict guidelines.

It would probably help to contribute feedback to those guidelines, since
those are in a commentary period till the end of the year.

Having been involved in the CSA works I'd be happy to draft a comment if we
intend to do so.

I haven't checked, but the current state likely already allows us to

IMHO this needs to stop. It should be something as simple as a section in

impersonate or mention FOSS projects hosted on sourceforge.net, maybe
adding something about deceptive advertising or deceptive clicking.

Unfortunately advertising networks like Google allow that to happen, and

This week we removed three deceptive ads coming that way, but since those
advertising networks do not provide much control over the type/content of
displayed ads. We're now talking to their accounts to identify a better
approach.

I mean it´s one thing to offer an OpenOffice add-on and another entirely
to offer an AOO download from an external site.

If SourceForge doesn´t put an end to this, they´re willing accomplices and
are hurting AOO with full knowledge.

I can tell that from our GM down fixing this is a top priority, as usual
I'll let facts talk.

SourceForge and commercial ads - continued

2014-11-19 Thread Bernard Marcelly

Hello again,
Two days later the questionable ads are still there, with a variant.

I see a blue square indicated : updatechecker.

chapter 1. Service Premium : Les frais de service s'élèvera à 4.50 Eur par code

SourceForge intentionally delays the real download by 5 seconds, letting the
abused surfer the time to click on a paying service which has IMHO unacceptable
conditions (read them).

Please, reply directly to the mailing list, not me, else the thread does not

[INFO] Your project is a Project of the Week on SourceForge!

2014-08-27 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
Hi,

I am a project owner of the AOO project at SourceForge that is mainly
used to handle the binary artifacts for our releases. You know I do the
upload of the binaries etc.

I was informed that AOO was one of the projects of the week. And I
thought it is worth to share it with you.

###
Hello,

My name is Elizabeth Daniels and I am the senior content editor for
SourceForge. I am writing to inform you that your project is featured as
Project of the Week and is listed on the front page of our site this
week. This means your project may be included in this month's Community
Project of the Month vote, depending on the number of downloads it gets.
If you haven't already done so, please update your Project Summary Page.

And, here is the link to the blog post notifying the community of your
accomplishment:

http://sourceforge.net/blog/projects-of-the-week-august-25-2014

Thanks! And best of luck.

One month later, after the fixes to our own site (i.e., updating

The whole localized folder is down from 25,000 to 8,000.

So it's now clear that the biggest responsibility for this was on our
web pages, not on the fact that people were browsing the tree manually.
I'd like to see es and pl go down again, but this doesn't seem very
problematic if you consider that 4.1.0 pl has 22,000 weekly downloads
and 4.1.0 es has 45,000.

For Danish, the problem is surely coming from ourselves: we are not
listing 4.1.0 at http://www.openoffice.org/da/ (discussed at
http://markmail.org/message/ibhey3f7jt6b7db2 , I'll fix it now so we can
see if the number decreases). For other languages, we should check our own
 site first!

I'd like to clean up the localized, stable, extended, contrib
and packages top-level directories by either
 - removing them altogether
 - recreate a 3.4.1 folder and remove the others
 - recreate a 3.4.1 and an old-OOo folder and remove the others

Breaking existing links is very bad. If people are getting these files, we
can't just remove them. I'd rather work on the causes (let's see what
Danish looks like in one week) and we can add a README.txt or something if
 you believe people are browsing the SourceForge file tree and getting lost;
but files are there, they are being heavily downloaded and removing there
 immediately would simply cause confusion.

Excellent analysis, and I totally agree on conclusions. I have a couple of
things to add:

1. we are open to investigate end-users' patterns if that helps, let me
know if any file in particular worth that
2. we might use symlinks if we end up by figuring out that some behaviours
are 'wrong' (e.g. referrals) or just the result of people looking for
'stable' versions

PS if we go with symlinks note that it will affect downloads stats for
those specifics files

Roberto

Then they should look for them in the ASF archive. This should be the
only location for very old release builds.

The ASF archive does not contain older OOo builds such as 3.2.1 or 3.3. These
artifacts were not released under the ASF umbrella so they are neither archived
in http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/ooo/ nor in
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/

Ancient OOo releases are still available in the archive mirror network though.

This could be our fault too. It seems that localized is mainly used to
serve these languages (using numbers from
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/localized/ ):
 pl 9500
 nb 3400
 da 2700
 es 2100

For Danish, the problem is surely coming from ourselves: we are not
listing 4.1.0 at http://www.openoffice.org/da/ (discussed at
http://markmail.org/message/ibhey3f7jt6b7db2 , I'll fix it now so we can
see if the number decreases). For other languages, we should check our
 own site first!

Again a further example why unified pages with the same content are a
good idea. Download links (wherever) should be generated out of one
resource.
And do we really need direct download links on localized pages? I
believe not, we see the problem here. I know some people prefer direct
links on their localized page but I think it doesn't scale and better is
to redirect users to the official download page where normally the most
recent version and language is downloaded automatically. And even the
download page can be translated but the download logic should be always
the same. Everything else is error prone and often unmaintained over time.

Juergen

I'd like to clean up the localized, stable, extended, contrib
and packages top-level directories by either
 - removing them altogether
 - recreate a 3.4.1 folder and remove the others
 - recreate a 3.4.1 and an old-OOo folder and remove the others

Breaking existing links is very bad. If people are getting these files,
we can't just remove them. I'd rather work on the causes (let's see what
Danish looks like in one week) and we can add a README.txt or something
if you believe people are browsing the SourceForge file tree and getting
lost; but files are there, they are being heavily downloaded and
removing there immediately would simply cause confusion.

   Andrea.

cleaning up our sourceforge top-level directory

2014-05-27 Thread Herbert Duerr
I just noticed that many people seem to download AOO directly from
sourceforge and that the directory structure obviously misleads them to
download obsolete binaries. Here is the top-level layout and its weekly
download count:

4.1.0:843,483 weekly downloads
localized: 25,891 weekly downloads
4.0.1: 24,410 weekly downloads
4.0.0: 3,731 weekly downloads
stable 1,800 weekly downloads
extended 558 weekly downloads
contrib41 weekly downloads
milestones:31 weekly downloads
packages6 weekly downloads

The localized and stable folders only provide the old 3.2.x, 3.3.0
and 3.4.x releases, so getting more than 28000 weekly downloads there is
an alarming signal.

The packages folder contains old OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 releases for
SolarisX86, SolarisSparc, MacPPC and for languages that are not yet
supported by AOO such as Maithili or Konkani.

The extended folder contains ISO-images with several builds of OOo321
and OOo330.

The contrib folder contains old dictionaries. They are not directly
usable and the newest one is from 2009.

So the current layout is apparently confusing and misleads a lot of
people to download stuff they wouldn't use if they knew that better
alternatives are available. I don't want to spend much time one this but

IMPORTANT:

Before deciding to remove any release builds, please consider the new
download webpage I'm building currently. This will offer also older AOO
versions. So, when we want to offer older version, then of course they
need to be available. ;-)

Therefore my suggestion:

- 4.1.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.0
Keep

- contrib, extended
Delete as it's outdated content

- packages
Move to archive

- localized, stable
Keep the 3.4.1 builds as last stable 3.x release, re-order them like the
4.x directory structure and move the 3.4.0 and older ones to archive

- milestones
Keep (as it's currently empty)
