Alternately, these emails could be treated as a subscription request and automatically held until the user subscribes. The auto-reply could inform the user that they must be subscribed, give them the option of subscribing by replying to the auto-reply (or clicking a link), and then automatically forward their original email to the list as soon as they subscribe. If they did not subscribe in 72 hours, their email would be deleted.
