And yes, the database is unusable, the import did not finish.

not in the end
of the process - les then half of nodes were imported in current
tables, so the import was far from end...
try to use the
buffer command, it may help to increase the speed.

What is api.openstreetmap.org using for exporting to xml? The C based
exporter or the rails_port?

Hi,
I set up a rails_port on a new server using PostgreSQL 8.3 and imported
the europe.osm data. Now exporting xml using the 0.6 API is really slow.
Exporting a file of about 3.2 MB takes 25 seconds. In the
development.log file I get lines like this:
[2010-04-09 18:11:21.569386 #27182] Completed
Thanks. Any hints on how this can be done with osmosis?

You're right, it's no fun at all.
Well here's what I did to try it with a smaller country excerpt (102
MB compressed) this night:
nohup bzcat ~/install/osm-dumps/austria.osm.bz2 |
./osmosis-0.34/bin/osmosis --read-xml-0.6 file=- --write-apidb-0.6
populateCurrentTables=yes host=localhost
by: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: duplicate key
value violates unique constraint nodes_pkey'
while testing with the old DB. So at some time in the future when I want
to import Europe into a DB that contains Austria I will have to create a
delta .osm first using osmosis?

That makes sense. My requirement is that I must continue querying the
old data while importing the new, larger data - which can take a long
time as we know. How can I achieve this?
