It seems to me that in slippymap.html whole page is covered with the map,
so background of a web page is not visible at all (except for thin
borders). As for the map background, its settings are stored in Mapnik's
XML style files, not in HTML nor CSS.

I'm not _certain_ what you are looking for. If you want to add fonts to mapnik
/ tile server, then perhaps this will help?

I tried that once too, but then I stopped using a osmosis based DB and
switched to osm2pgsql. But I had a somewhat 90% working solution ...
