Re: [OSM-dev] using Osmium to filter osh files

2014-05-25 Thread joost schouppe
Hi Abichek,

I've been using Mazderminds History Splitter and Importer to create a
Postgres database to do similar analysis. See
https://github.com/MaZderMind/osm-history-renderer/blob/master/TUTORIAL.mdand
my diary for how far I've gotten:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/joost%20schouppe/diary/21826
I'm a complete newbee, but from what I hear, it sounds like this would give
you an easier framework than working directly with Osmium?

I'll send you a personal mail too, because I'm working on a somewhat
similar project.

Re: [OSM-dev] New Map Style feedback

2015-11-03 Thread joost schouppe
I agree that knowing which roads are toll and which aren't is super
interesting. However, there's plenty of trunk roads that are toll in South
America and there are quite a few motorways in France that aren't toll.

Really, I think we need a road-focused mapstyle that shows paved/unpaved
and toll/no toll information first. I don't think trying to convey all of
this in OSM-carto is ever going to work.

Re: [OSM-dev] Accessing history of OSM objects

2015-12-11 Thread joost schouppe
Hi Aycan,

I wrote a few diary entries on this subject. In the first one of the
series, you'll find the link to a tutorial on how to do this. It really
takes you through every single step, and results in a clean Postgres
database and cool animated maps of the evolution of your area of interest.
It's a good idea to start small, as you said.

I didn't know the first thing about SQL, Python, OSM history data, Linux,
command line work, etc. when I started this. I'd be happy to help out where
I can.

I do most of my post-processing in SPSS. If that's of use to you, I can
share those scripts too. They might kind of work in PSPP too. Maybe.

Here's the link:

Thank you for that!

I suppose they're slightly buffered as usual, so the dataset includes the
entire region and a little extra. So if anyone wants to make statistics
with them, you'll still need something like the OSM-history-splitter (or a
spatial query) to limit results to your area of interest.

Re: [OSM-dev] Removing functionality and giving just No as answer

2017-03-08 Thread joost schouppe
Just to clarify, Tom, would the example given by mmd (
http://www.sammyshp.de/fsmap/#18/51.01486/13.63683) be something you would
deem acceptable in osm.org?

BTW, one of the places where people were "canvasing" was here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/openstreetmap/comments/5uvbby/the_openstreetmaporg_map_now_has_a_rightclick/

While a lot of the comments are a bit misguided, I think it is clear that
quite a few mappers use this dirty trick to get the render to refresh. As
OSM.org is supposed to be a mapper's tool and not a general public website,
I think it is quite obvious that a forced-tile-refresh function is within
the scope of the website.

[OSM-dev] OSRM on osm.org not working

Apparently, OSRM routing on osm.org has been down for a few days. I have no

would be. But I'm sure someone here knows.

Re: [OSM-dev] Automatically triggering export as PDF from openstreetmap.org -> share?

2017-12-22 Thread joost schouppe
I'm not familiar with the exact workflow in QGIS, but I think you could
probably fully automate this process with it.

On the data side, just download a county PBF file (for example from
geofabrik), and convert it to a database. I always use spatialite for
things like this, here's a manual:
https://github.com/osmbe/qgis_rendering/blob/master/qgis-loves-spatialite.md
Or you could use the shapefiles provided there.

Then you need a set of rendering rules. There seem to be some basic styles
around that you could reuse:
https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/90086/is-there-a-good-qml-or-sld-file-available-for-qgis-openstreetmap-data
Updating your maps would just be a matter of replacing the source files.

Third, you should be able to rotate through the set of places with the
Atlas function.
Last, export to PDF; I have no idea if QGIS can produce the kind of PDFs
you need.

Re: [OSM-dev] Workflow for bulk upload of GPX files

2019-05-28 Thread joost schouppe
You might have a decent shot of getting volunteers to map this if you
create a Maproulette challenge. I imagine the roads are sparse, and spread
out of a larger area. So turn them into individual objects, which can be
mapped in little time. For example, from a few dozen to a few kilometer
long sections of a single road. Or perhaps a few adjecent roads. These
become individual microtasks in Maproulette. You might split them up per
country and get in touch with several local communities. These tasks are
rather fun to do (especially if your pre-processing is good) so you might
actually get some work done.

As for "how to recrute paid mappers", I'm not sure. I know Kaart and
Telenav do similar work, so they might be interested. Here's some
activities that follow the "organized editing guideliness", and hence have
a record in "activities". Note that many of these are not commercial.
