I had a similar thought a couple of weeks ago when I tried to find my way using the map on the small screen of my hand held gps. Afterwards, Rob Annable told me about Bendy Maps (see http://schulzeandwebb.com/hat/ for an example). It's not exactly what I had in mind but still very cool :-)

Most maps of small areas have a constant scale: eg: 100 pixels = 1 mile. Has anyone created maps w/ variable scales? An example would be: 100 pixels = 1 mile at the edge of the map, but 100 pixels = 100 feet at the center of the map. This would be useful for driving directions type maps, where

I believe Kelly was interested in static maps (eg paper maps) that cannot be re-rendered every second. Instead of providing map insets with higher detail it would be interesting to have a fisheye style map, which would cover large areas, but still provide high details in the centre or some other
