style comment: as a clarity/readability thing, I always prefer to use:
@parts 3
rather than $#parts...

The changes will make the behavior more correct and faster.
Then there should at the very least be no worsening of the mass-check
results. I'm not going to +1 major behavioral changes to 3.0.1 tree
unless someone tests them on a small corpus. It's the *stable* tree.
