>From my understanding of the situation, that's not an accurate characterization of what's happened here. All that's happened is that a group that is working on a private fork of Usergrid has come forward to start contributing their work back into the project for the purpose of invigorating it.

As long as it's made clear that AWS is optional and unnecessary for most deployments of Usergrid, that's cool.  Seems like it's a documentation issue.   I'd hate for people to get deterred from using it because they assumed there was a dependency on AWS.Ed _
