With the 31 train going to beta last week, Firefox telemetry is now enabled by default for new and existing beta users for Firefox desktop and Firefox for Android. Existing users will see the data-choices prompt again.

The beta population in particular is much more representative of our release users than the nightly or aurora populations. It has a range of locales, extensions and plugins, and usage patterns which makes it possible to predict how a feature or change will affect a release population which doesn't work on nightly/aurora.

Our large, active, and engaged prerelease users are an advantage to Mozilla. Our intention is to use the Firefox beta population much more actively to measure aspects of the browser, both existing and planned. This includes built-in measurements as well as the experiment system.

I encourage everyone who is building Firefox code to consider whether there are measurements or experiments that would help you make better decisions about upcoming features. If you are unsure about a potential measurement or experiment, I am available as a guide. I am happy to help design experiments to produce useful answers while still honoring our prerelease users' privacy and security.

Please followup to dev.planning if you have questions or comments.
