You can't open the editor because you did not use qualified names, technically
the non qualified plans are technically invalid and thus any generated model
code cannot open them until the plan is made qualified.

I really need for you to provide me a full example as an attachement of both
the applicaton and the web app as a test case.

It's in neither one.

I mentioned ExteranalExclipseRepository to illustrate that al least that [and
only that :( ] shows up in Geronimo. Something is definitely wrong.

And - by the way - because I added - Plan Editor cannot open
the plan any more - it bails out.

David - thank you very much for the clarification. (It' probably my English -
but I never mentioned "web-container element inside the container-config
element". I just wanted to stress the fact that WebContainer could be defined
on any level in the deployment plan hierarchy.)

So the solution to try as it stands right now seems to be:
- create a from geronimo-web.xml to a TomcatWebContainer defined
in geronimo-application.xml
- check if this plan publishes correctly via plugin

I will try it and post result here.

If you make a slightly inaccurate statement or claim it quickly gets extremely
hard to understand what you are talking about
Oleg, the web-container element is NOT inside the container-config element.
The container-config element is for configuring jetty-specific or
tomcat-specific properties. The web-container element is for specifying which
web container instance you want to use. You have to be sure that you specify a
tomcat web container if you want to use tomcat this does not control which
web container your app will get deployed onto.

The web-container element has enough structure or information to specify any
gbean in the entire server, so there is certainly no restriction that the
specified web container be deployed in the application. In fact, if the web
container gbean is in the set of ancestors of the application, geronimo will
find it if you use the gbean-link format.

provides element. But the goal is not to define
WebContainer on the WAR level, but rather point to a container defined
somewhere up the hierarchy - in enclosing EAR or on server level. Though
nothing prevents a user from fully defining WebContainer in geronimo-web.xml.

So both plan editor and the wizard should differenciate these two cases. Still
- can you clarify if it is possible to include a reference to a WebContainer
defined elsewhere into web deployment plan? This may solve the issue raised in

>>- What I don't understand is since there is a TomcatWebContainer defined, why

It would not be a good thing for runtime to mess with applications it runs. If
an application defines a WebContainer - it plans to use it for it's own web
modules. So deploying a module into a first container foung does not fly.

The only logical alternative - ability to select container. Could that be done
with a dendency or reference definition in geronimo-web.xml? Then plugin can
use that plan if one exists.

>>Alternatively, the Eclipse WTP Server Framework allows extensiblility to the
>>publishing processes. So you could actually extend the Geronimo publish
>>processes by providing a publish task, that sets the appropriate WebContainer.

I guess - everything is possible. But what's the value of plugin if it supports
only trivial use cases? It is as if car manufacturer assembles a frame with
wheels, engine and steering wheel and sells to you, saying that the rest you
can add yourself. Possible, but hardly practical :)

I think we should attract users to this project. And the only way to do that is
by providing convenient and flexible tools.

Ok, so from my understanding the Eclipse plugin simply needs to provide support
in the deployment plan editor as well as the new web project creation wizard
for the WebContainer element.

- What I don't understand is since there is a TomcatWebContainer defined, why
isn't Geronimo defaulting to the first one found?

Alternatively, the Eclipse WTP Server Framework allows extensiblility to the

>>exploded ear

This EAR is the only one that will ever make it to this application, so we
kinda emulated what Tomcat does - webapps folder and pseudo- hot deployment
from it - whatever is there in the beginning gets deployed.

"Pseudo" bacause I believe Geronimo does not (yet?) have an option of scanning
a directory for new drops.

>>Does this constitute a reasonable pattern to use?

I think there may be a slight problem with it:

-- IIUC you essentially have an ear (since you have a geronimo-application.xml
file). I think that an ear needs to be in something that looks more like an
exploded ear, such as a structure like:
${GERONIMO_HOME}/webapps/BigEar.ear/META-INF/geronimo-application.xml

If what you are doing works, go for it :-)

Other that that, this looks entirely reasonable to me. I suspect the only
problem with supporting the web-container element in the generic plan is that
sachin didn't know about it :-)

TomcatWebContainer, TomcatEngine, all connectors and 3 existing WARs that start

- I am trying to deploy and debug Eclipse WAR project into this WebContainer

Does this constitute a reasonable pattern to use?

I don't know anything about the eclipse plugin but I can't follow what you
are trying to do. Recall that to use a non-default web container you have to
specify it explicitly in the geronimo plan using the web-container element. Is
it possible that the problem here is caused by the eclipse plugin leaving that
element out of a geronimo plan?

I would find this easier to follow if you provided the application you are
trying to deploy. I realize this might not be practical with an eclipse
project in which case we have a bigger problem to solve :-(

As far as I understand - applications are isolated from each other because
their perspective classloaders are siblings, and the parent classloader does
not know about them.

If this applies to gbean namespace - which by all means it should - this issue
becomes a blocker. Because if I define WebContainer in EAR - nobody else can
use it but EAR children. And this might be an intended application design.

EAR's should be able to - in terms of Tomcat - at least define their own
connectors and, probably - engines. Should it be postulated then that
WebContainer, if any, is always defined server-wide? But what if somebody wants
to make this container invisible for some applications?

In short - if "EAR level WebContainer" is a valid structure - it may be
plugin's burden - not runtime's. But we need clarification from runtime folks.

Ok then it seems to be that Geronimo needs to be able to resolve this during
deployment. It does not make sense from my perspective to prompt for a web
container to deploy to as you're already specifying the server you're deploying
to which at most would contain 1 web container. I'm going to redirect this

The referenced gbean - TomacWebContainer - is deployed on the server but on the

I can run my WARs, deployed under that EAR
