infiormation, for the last developments with Geronimo, I prefered using the
myEclipse plugin (unfortunatetly in production mode: issue 472):According to
the type of J2EE files here is the behavior, which is better than GEP (for the
moment with my ear application) - When modifying a helper/controller/dao class,
the hot deployment works- When modifying a POJO, I had to restart the
application server. (But it was also the case with weblogic even in development
mode)- When modifying a jsp, hot deployment does not work, but I manually copy
them from my workspace to the geronimo application repositoryThis way, I am not
losing so much development time As I am talking about the myEclipse plugin for
geronimo, I make you notice that I have another issue 472 dealing with the
problem that I can't do an exploded deployment (development mode) because of my
Ejb. In the meantime, I have posted an issue to the myEclipse team support,
according to them, this is a problem with the geronimo deployment
process...Here is the issue for

Hi Jean-Jacques, I finally have a better understanding of your problem. Thanks
for all the material you've supplied via this Jira and as email attachments.
One option that we've had a lot of success in the past with to speed up
deployment/redeployment from the GEP is to use the sharedlib capability of
Geronimo. Since you cannot send me your Eclipse workspace I wonder if you have
one or more POJO projects in your workspace that is shared amongst multiple web
projects in your workspace (i.e, there is a J2EE dependency between the Web
project and the POJO which will embed the POJO JAR in the Web project's WAR).>

project will get deployed in-place to the sharedlib, and the actual contents of
the POJO do not get copied over. instead a Dummy JAR gets created inside
sharedlib that contains a manifest file that points back to the project in the
workspace. This can significantly speed up deployments within Eclipse
especially when there are many deployable artifacts with the same POJO
dependency. > > Do you know if this is the case with your workspace ?? If not

My EAR file is more than 30M !! Can't attach it in JIRA and may be too much by
email. Whatever, I am not sure I will be allowed to send it.

Please, one last question about GEP.
As I said before, sometimes the republishing process works fine.
But How should I configure GEP, to do hot deployment. Is it possible with GEP?
When I modify, for example, one JSP in a web application, GEP wants to
republish the entire ear and restarts the entire application.
For now, if I want to work with GEP, I will have to disable the automatic
publishing, do my job, and when it's done, publish the project, hoping there
won't be too much mistakes if I won't to avoid this long process of
republishing and restarting the application.
What's more, Geronimo does not keep the compiled and unchanged jsp. He has to
recompile them at each access to the application after every restart of the
server.
I give you the catalina/conf/web.xml in attachment where those configurations
should take place if I understood the documentation correctly.
Are ther other configurations?

Thanks

Hi Jean-Jacques, your memory parameters seem fine. I normally use the
parameters below and typically only have memory problems when there are other

Unfortunately, I'm still unable to exactly reproduce your failure. Would you be
able to either email me or attach your entire EAR file ?? Thanks for your

Tim, I am a bit confused. Today, the redeployment works several times and then
hangs . I suspected a memory problem.
I have increase the -XX:MaxPermSize of eclipse.ini from 128m to 256m.

But still have hanging problems
Now I clearly received 'outOfMemory' errors

I have installed GEP 2.1.2 with Geronimo 2.1.2.
The problem mentioned in this issue does not appear anymore. The server starts
and stops fine.

But I have some problems when developing with Geronimo, especially at
(re)deployment time.

When modifying any java or jsp file, the corresponding jar or web application
is marked as to be republished. The server automatically republishes the entire
application, but this process fails: the republish action hangs. I finally have
to stop the geronimo server and clean the situation. (remove the project and
add it again to the server).
You can imagine that this process takes too much time in a development phase.

I have attached the jira-473.doc with some printscreens.
Just let me know if I am doing something wrong or if some configurations are
missing.

Thanks in advance.

>
> I have installed wtp-all-in-one-sdk-win32 and than follow the instructions as
> suggested in
> http://geronimo.apache.org/geronimo-eclipse-plugin-installation-instructions.html.
> I have also manually installed the plugin:
> geronimo-eclipse-plugin-2.0.0-deployable.zip
> I configured the server geronimo and try to start it without deploying
> anything yet.
> In the eclipse console, a message indicates that the server startup is
> complete, but the status in Eclipse is still 'starting'.
> Indeed, the server is started, I can use the web console, but then comes the
> timeout and the server stops.
> Is it a configuration problem?
> Thanks

Ted Kirby commented on GERONIMODEVTOOLS-473:

I seem to recall some issues in this area fixed in a later release. Our web
pages are out of date. They refer to 2.0 release, when 2.1.1 is the most
recent, and 2.1.2 is coming out soon. Would you like to try 2.1.1? It works
with Europa Winter. See
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/development-environment.html#Developmentenvironment-InstallingEclipse
 for installation instructions.

what is the JDK version you are using? Also is there any error logged in your
workspace .metadata/.log?
