I also like Otava with its beautiful lore. It looks to me that it is also
your preference, Henrik and Sean, right?

2024-12-17 Thread Henrik Ingo
Ah right. I guess I like multiple options as potentially good. Now that you
mention it, I thought of the vote more as a poll. It would be interesting
to see if there's some alternative that kind of "sticks out". But maybe to
facilitate a discussion toward potential consensus, let me aggregate all
presented options into a single email at least:

Apache Ghunter
Apache Tapio
Apache Sawa
Apache Mielikki
Apache Chaser
Apache Suunnistus
Apache Otava
Apache Karen

My apologies Mick, when compiling this list I realized your email actually
contained a suggestion too. Don't know how I missed it originally as it is
quite clear and a good suggestion.

Eddie and Midnight I'll disqualify due to apparent risk of trademark
infringement.

>From the above list, I sometimes wonder whether we should ask legal counsel
for advice on the following:

Apache Ghunter -> Is it a problem if it rhymes with the previously
disqualified name?

Tapio and Mielikkki -> Is it a problem that they are related to the
mythical character known as Nyrkiö (my company)

Apache Karen -> Probably offensive?

Actually, Apache Chaser, as it is a synonym of the disqualified name, could
be good to check as well.

Even so, from the above list I actually like Apache Otava. Personally I
never felt like I hunt for regressions, nor do I chase them. I simply find
them. Otava (Big Bear star constellation) is a perfect symbol for that.

Is there a consensus on Gunther vs. Tapio (or something else)?

Mick was asking for a name that somehow is associated with the topic of
change detection. I feel like Karen and Suunnistus are perhaps not quite
what you asked for? Should we try to explore something more seriously in
that direction? Other than that I don't think I have more ideas myself.

Linux Mandrake eventually had to change its name for this reason. (I guess
they had the cartoon figure as their mascot too.)

Apple (Steve Jobs vs Beatles) is another famous example of being in the
different domain and still getting into trouble.

The best I've thought of so far that would actually refer to change point
detection would be "Apache Karen". Karen helps spot even the smallest
changes and preserve status quo...

But yeah, let's keep brainstorming...

Re: Trademarks did not approve of Apache Hunter

2024-12-12 Thread Henrik Ingo
Dave, I share this association as well! In fact, when we plot performance
results on a graph, or 50 graphs, and then mark change points with a red
dot, it reminds me of how trails in the woods might be marked with red dots
on trees and fence posts.

All of the forest spirits of Finland, Tapio, Mielikki (and Nyyrikki) share
this aspect as well. They would help a wanderer (or hunter) find their way
back home.

For whatever reason I'm not particularly excited about "suunnistus"... It
reminds me of mosqituous and cold rain... But in the same spirit, may I
suggest "Otava".

Otava is the most distinguishable star constellation in the Finnish sky. In
English known as the Big Bear. It was crucial for... (drumroll) ...
navigation (whether on the sea or in a forest) because its tail points
directly to the North Star. Also the stars themselves visually look like
change points on a graph, so the logo is there for free.

Apache Otava is quite a tongue twister though. But I believe common usage
would be just Otava.

Re: Trademarks did not approve of Apache Hunter

2024-12-11 Thread Dave Fisher
Random thought from this peanut -

Hunter is a bit like Orienteering - "a competitive sport in which participants
find their way to various checkpoints across rough country with the aid of a
map and compass, the winner being the one with the lowest elapsed time."

The Finnish word for that according to Google translate is “Suunnistus”

I was at first a bit upset at the rejection. Hunter is such a generic term,
that it felt derogatory to reduce a rich indigenous culture to a primitive
action. But it only takes a few google searches to see the phrase has a strong
north american connotation in place.

- Mielikki

...Tapio's wife and Nyyrikki's mother. Initially I wanted to add this to
perhaps add some gender balance, but phonetically this is a beautiful name
I think. It's also so Finnish that we would not get into trouble with
trademark review.

Re: Trademarks did not approve of Apache Hunter

2024-12-11 Thread Henrik Ingo
I had anticipated this, I realized the problem when myself googling for
Apache Hunter

Ideas:
 - Apache Gunther

I tried to come up with all kinds of birth stories for this name. Perhaps
the one most close to actual reality is that Alexander lived in Munich when
we first met (over zoom, covid) and decided to start the hunter project. As
Alexander eventually wasn't assigned to work on the project and then moved
away from Germany, it's not avery strong story. Perhaps the best argument
for this name is that it's clearly not American in any way :-D

If we choose this name we must commit to meet every year at the Oktoberfest
;-P

- Sawa

A nod to Hunter's actual roots in Warsawa, Poland. In the legend Sawa is
either the sister, wife or mermaid to Wars, and together they settle to
live where Warsawa is today.

- Tapio

...or something else from the vast Finnish mythology. Tapio is the god of
the forest and animals. Often depicted with shamanic horns but sometimes it
is thought that he is the bear!

Tapio is the father to a certain Nyyrikki/Nyrkiö. This would create a
similar relationship between the two trademarks as Tux (Linux Foundation /
Torvalds) -> Emperor Linux (for profit vendor).

This is a little upsetting. What do you think about using the rest of the
week to propose and discuss name suggestions in this thread, then starting
a vote next Monday?

Naturally, when suggesting a name we should follow
https://incubator.apache.org/guides/names.html.
