[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12894) Solr documention for Java Vendors
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12894?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=16665591#comment-16665591 ] Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-12894: With the new 6-month release cadence from Oracle people will need to upgrade versions every 6 months or alternatively purchase a license from Oracle. While Oracle Java and other paid options may be the goto choice for some, I think most users are better off if all our docs and examples uses the [adoptopenjdk.net|https://adoptopenjdk.net/] distribution and links to it. The AdoptOpenJDK releases are probably the closes thing to what people are used to from Oracle already, getting security and bug fixes at regular intervals. You will get that 100% open source and free from AdoptOpenJDK. We can of course also mention the other JREs that we regularly run tests for. > Solr documention for Java Vendors > - > > Key: SOLR-12894 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12894 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. If we are to reccomend users to use OpenJDK maybe we should have a link so that users can download them on Windows , Linux and Mac? https://openjdk.java.net/install/ only has packages for linux . Binaries for more platforms available here: https://adoptopenjdk.net/releases.html bq. How does this change look? +1, except maybe update the {{java -version}} output in {{solr-system-requirements.adoc}} to something more modern? E.g. mine from this issue's description (though it's from the Debian 8 {{openjdk-8-\*}} packages, so not the most recent). > Solr documention for Java Vendors > - > > Key: SOLR-12894 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12894 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. All we should say is both OpenJDK and Oracle JDK are well tested and both work fine. Sounds good. Add something like "You'll want to be sure that the license for the Java version you choose will meet your needs" ... to be re-worded as necessary so it flows well. So we draw attention to licensing without an explicit recommendation. > Solr documention for Java Vendors > - > > Key: SOLR-12894 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12894 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level.
