How to get a clear-cut or not fuzzy character?

I use Windows 10 OS. I just switched from MS Word to OpenOffice. When using Writer, I found the characters are fuzzy. I tried Graghic Output (4 combinations), it does not improve. How can I get rid of the fuzziness? Plz help.

Yes, I did run a make clean from the root dir, and it did work later, but I think some of the documentation needs to be updated to reflect the changes that happened in OS X 10.11 I ran into issues with openssl because Apple removed openssl headers from OS X with the release of El Capitan. I

I downloaded the tar.bz2 to see if it could be extracted on Windows using available tools. The WinZip I use (admittedly an old version) does not recognize it. 7z recognizes the bz2 and will decompress it as the .tar file. 7z will then also extract the .tar if used again in a separate step.
