Confirmed with Arrigo's s test build on our M1 machine...

Just did a quick check of HEAD of AOO41X and with Arrigo's fix, we no longer
hang on any macOS platforms I have access to when doing a Check for Updates.

It should be fixed by commit 32041aa, that is (currently, the only)
part of pull request 427 [1].

For this reason I suggest we just merge & cherry pick it, and then
release another RC.

I wish I could work quicker on bug 127154 [2] as well, but I am a bit
behind my schedule, unfortunately.

nevertheless, you have a found a good way.

Thanks for your work.

Since I asked for release blocker status my position should be clear... ;-)

Most likely AOO will also hang when it automatically checks for updates
in the background, sooner or later *every* user will experience a hang.

right, I think this argument is the show stopper.

Luckily Arrigo seems to have a solution that may be sufficient for this
release.

And if this is not the best solution, then - at least - we get a bit
more time for analyzing and finding a better solution.

That's true: there are some minor differences.
I just did the cherry-pick & adaptation.
