[edk2-devel] TianoCore Meeting Minutes - August 2021

2021-08-17 Thread Soumya Guptha
TianoCore Community Meeting

August 12, 2021

EVENTS:

Google Summer of Code:

  * 7 projects were selected, one of the projects got dropped before
mid-term. All projects are listed here:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/6376892141142016/
  * All 6 are doing well. Code review in progress. Projects are targeted to
be complete by Aug 23.
  * Students should have the patches submitted by Aug 16, so we can get them
reviewed and merge by Aug 23.
  * Community Action: provide feedback to students. Next week, we need
maintainers to review patches.

No new updates on UEFI plugfest

Stable Tag updates:

  * EDK2 Stable Tag 202108 soft freeze complete, hard freeze (8/13).
  *   Details here:
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning
  * We are maintaining 2 weeks between hard freeze and final Release.
Previously we had 1 wk gap between hard freeze and release. Now with a 2 week
gap allows us to find issues and fix those before releasing. Moving forward we
will maintain 2 week gap between hard freeze and Release.
  * Stable tag improvements: Liming will start adding tags for soft and hard
freeze. This will help the community as they pull in the tags, when issues are
reported, test issues/results can be tagged to the soft/hard freeze. This is
change from what we had earlier.

Community Opens:

  1. Open from Rebecca - EDK2 Lib C patch. Lib C has not updated for a while.
Unknown state on support and maintainership.

  * Update from Mike Kinney: There are no maintainers currently. Its based on
a very old version of the code, need to bring it up to date. There are a few
proposals in progress. There is active discussion in the email distribution
list (dev list). Does community have any concerns around current proposals?
(staging repository CDE package, Standard lib package (PDC lib) in staging).
  * Community Action: We would like community involved in this discussion. If
there are any concerns around downstream use around the licenses, please let us
know.
Do we want to add full standard C lib support to EDK2 repo? We need drive
consensus within the next 2-4 weeks.

  1. Open from Rebecca: Xcode Wiki page needs to be updated. It seems to be
slow. Andrew has looked into it.

  * Action: Rebecca send an email on the mailing list. Status: Closed. Liming
has updated.

  1. Open from Felix on Coverity & Static analyzer for EDK2 -

  * Mike Kinney noted: It's not maintained currently. Goal is to have the CI
process set up by this year.

Review the content with TianoCore Infosec community.

  * Mike Kinney noted potential approaches: To eliminate false positives or
mark as not an issue if its a false positive so we are aware. Open Coverity is
a powerful tool for open source projects. it's a gap currently in EDK2 project
to not have a static analysis tool. We need resources to work on the CI system.
  * Felix is looking at Coverity and interested in supporting.
  * Action: Felix to open a RFC discussion and lead a planning discussion. We
don't do static analysis today as part of the open source project.

[edk2-devel] TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes - June

2021-06-11 Thread Soumya Guptha
TianoCore Community Meeting

June 10, 2021

EVENTS:

  * UEFI Plugfest (update from Dick Wilkins)
  * Plugfest is being planned for early April 2022 in Oregon. Detailed
planning of the schedule and logistics will kick off in a few weeks.
  * ICWG is hosting UEFI Virtual Plugfest webinars, if you are interested in
presenting, please send your proposals to UEFI plugfest.

Google Summer of Code (update from Nate Desimone)

  * Google has announced this year's Summer of Code students. TianoCore is
mentoring 7 students this year, which is more than 3 times larger than our
previous high of 2 students! The list of projects is available here:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/6376892141142016/
  * Students have started submitting patches. Students need to complete
projects by mid-august.
  * Community Action: Provide feedback to students and support them to be
successful.

Stable Tag updates:

  * EDK2 Stable Tag 202105 has been released. EDK2 Stable Tag 202108 is
collecting features.
  *   Details here:
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning
  * Action: Bugzilla needs to be updated with the latest Stable tag info -
Mike Kinney will update.
  * From Google summer of code projects, if there are any features impacting
EDK2 core, we need to make sure that those features get into the stable tag.
Mentors need to work on getting those features in and communicate with Liming
Gao. Action: Nate Desimone plans to communicate with the mentors and educate
them on the process.

Stewards Meeting Download (update from Mike Kinney)

  * Discussed process issue - During beginning soft/hard releases, we need to
add a RC1 & RC0 tags when soft and hard freeze are announced to support
validation. Lazlo plans to write an RFC on this topic. Once this approves,
liming may need to update the documentation.
  * There is some confusion with Roles and Responsibilities (R) between
maintainers and reviewers around reviewing packet (push label/merge). Reviewers
also have push access. But Maintainer is the gate keeper and should approve the
final changes to the package. Action for Stewards: We need to update the
documentation (development process, who we are and any other wiki pages that
are impacted) and clarify the R
  * Enhance support on previous Stable Tags - we will support critical bug
fixes and security issues to the most recent Stable Tag.
 * Release process between stable tags is typically 3 months. Today we
are operating reactively based on request. We want to have a standard process.
If there is a critical issue (such as a security issue)/bug fixes in the
subprojects, we want to be more proactive by having a standard operating
process to have these propagated into our most recent stable tag.
 * Action: Liming to update the support of Stable Tags to reflect this
change.

Opens

  * (Open from Nate) NVME 2.0 just got formally published. Most interesting
feature to be evaluated is "Zoned name space" feature. Any UEFI spec changes.
Action: Evaluate and determine to see if we need to support this feature. What
will be our plan for doing this? A topic for Ray Ni's design meeting. Soumya to
communicate with Ray Ni on this topic.
  * Update from Soumya: Puja Pandya moved on to pursue another opportunity.
Soumya Guptha will continue to lead TianoCore Community Management.

Acknowledgements
Mike Kinney thanked Kevin Davis for doing analysis for UEFI 2.8 specification
gaps.

[edk2-devel] TianoCore Meeting Minutes - May 2021

2021-05-07 Thread Soumya Guptha
Revised minutes:

TianoCore Community Meeting

May 6, 2021

EVENTS:
UEFI Plugfest (update from Dick Wilkins):
We are planning a plug fest during the week of April 4th during 2022 in
Hillsboro, Oregon.

Google Summer of Code (update from Nate Desimone)
  * Google has reviewed the project submissions and will communicate the
decisions to those applicants on the accepted projects on May 17th.
  * Projects will begin from Jun 7 till Aug 16th.
  * Community Action: We encourage entire community to be involved, for
getting your input/comments and supporting our mentors. The community can get
involved in activities such as code reviews etc.. we need support from
maintainers, reviewers. Be responsive on the mailing list. you can respond to
students when they post questions on the mailing list.

Stable Tag updates:

o Up to date information:
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning

o Feature planning freeze scheduled for 5/10/2021

Stewards Meeting Download (Mike Kinney)

*   Limited attendance this month.

o We are seeing an increase in EDK2 CI failure/coverage issues. Azure moved
to Ubuntu 20 and we are still on Ubuntu 18. There are some gaps (such as
emulator package) that we are addressing. There is a specific failure on
emulator package that we need to disable temporarily. Ubuntu GCC IA32
EmulatorPkg - 32-bit X11 dependency conflicts. May need to consider adding text
console support.

o Action: Mike Kinney will submit an RFC

*   Bugzilla 988 (https://bugzilla.tianocore.org/show_bug.cgi?id=988) -
performance issues in handles database.

o DXE core implementation and performance issues on large number of handles.

o Question to the Community: Can we drop EFI 1.02 driver compatibility
support from DXE core?

Removing the compatibility will help the performance issues, but not fully
resolve them. Risk is extremely low for support. Simple change in DXE core.
Base tools still have support for building EDK1 style modules. Action: Mike to
start an RFC on this topic.

Opens:
Dick Wilkins - MSFT maintains the list of revoked code signatures for UEFI code
modules and loaders for the UEFI Forum and produces binary files that contain
revoked signatures for use by secure boot. MSFT has approved the latest update
of revoked signatures list for general testing. They are posted at
https://uefi.org/revocationlistfile. These files should only be used for
testing at this time. Use of these files my cause systems to not boot and
should not be used in shipping products without appropriate planning and
testing.

TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes

April 8, 2021

EVENTS:

UEFI Plugfest (Soumya Guptha):

  * No new update this month.
  * Currently UEFI is hosting virtual webinars during 2021, listed here
(https://uefi.org/events/upcoming).
  * If you have topics to propose, please visit uefi.org/events and submit
your abstracts.
  * ICWG team is planning to host a face-to-face UEFI plugfest in Oregon
during spring 2022.

Google Summer of Code (Nate Desimone):
* TianoCore was accepted! 12 students have expressed interest, 4 formal
applications so far.
* Expecting more applications before application deadline April 13th
* During the application review process, we will review apps and submit
our selections to Google. They will let us know how many slots we can have for
our project.
* We currently have 6 mentors, we need about 2 per participant/student.
* We don't have enough mentors, we may need to reject some applications
if we don't get enough mentors.
* Community Action: If anyone is interested in mentoring students, please
contact Nate DeSimone
o Mentor Responsibilities listed here:
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/GSoC2021#potential-mentors
o Time commitment: Requires about 2.5 hours/week over the course of 10 weeks
this summer
o Listed on twitter - https://twitter.com/tianocore/status/1379207540005761024

Stable Tag (Soumya Guptha/Liming Gao):

  * EDK2-stable202105 is in planning stage. May 10th is the feature planning
freeze. Please send your feature requests soon.
  *   More information here -
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning
  * Liming: currently monitoring EDKII community mail list to document change
request. Latest data is available on the wiki page. Update notes are also
included on the wiki with changes that will impact release planning for the
next stable tag.
  * Open: Kevin Davis: Is there a plan for someone going through the UEFI
specs and verifying requirements/optional features that are not in the code?
The current code base is a mixture of UEFI 2.7/2.8/2.9/ACPI etc.
o Response from Mike Kinney: That sounds like a great community activity,
would you like to lead the evaluation of that? We do not have that in the plans
yet. Building that feature list and working with Liming to set some feature
goals would be great. Then we can review the features and figure out a schedule
for them
o Response from Kevin Davis: checked with one of his engineers in Insyde, he
agreed to work on that. He will provide an update next week after he has a
better idea of schedule. Kevin plans to connect with Mike Kinney on further
questions/updates.

Stewards Download: (Mike Kinney)
* There are some inconsistencies in our tool chains for enabling symbolic
debug
* General concerns that we don't have very good recipes on how to set up
source level debug (GDB connection, JTAG connection, UDK debugger etc). There
are some things we could do to improve that material.
o Soumya: Q3 effort?
o Mike: observation, no dates yet. Still investigating.
o Soumya: Do you expect features or doc reorganization?
o Mike: combination, requirements will be tracked on Bugzilla for both code
and documentation as investigation progresses

Opens:

Soumya Past Opens:
* We have moved to Teams. We will continue to use this for the next
couple months, let us know if you're having any issues with connecting to calls
using Teams

* Mike: Priority wise - this is still one of the highest priority.
Actively working on that. Found landing zone for service, will deploy it there
for formal evaluation from the community. Will use same server that is hosting
our Bugzilla service right now

Soumya:
* Puja Pandya will lead TianoCore community management starting May,
Soumya will still attend meetings as able but will be focusing on Firmware
Ecosystem Enabling Management going forward. Please provide your support to Puja

@Desimone, Nathaniel L<mailto:nathaniel.l.desim...@intel.com>, I'm interested
in mentorship for the GSC project. Would like to talk offline about potential
projects and past experience.

RE: ECC, we're internally evaluating 'uncrustify' as an option to 1) check for
formatting violations and 2) provide a tool to automatically format code prior
to submission. There are changes that we've made to the tool to support ECC,
but there are some small places that we're coming up short. What would be the
appetite to evaluate our progress and discuss possibly adjusting the ECC to be
more flexible where we've come up short?

[edk2-devel] TianoCore Community Meeting this week - using Webex, please resync your calendar

2020-10-05 Thread Soumya Guptha
Dear Community members,
I have updated our October community meeting with Webex. Please resync your
calendar so you have the latest meeting invite.
Some of them have experienced issues with blue jeans, hence I am trying Webex
for our meeting this week.

Re: 回复: [edk2-devel] Tianocore community page on who we are - please review

2020-10-01 Thread Soumya Guptha
Hi Folks,

Thanks for good discussions around this topic.

The purpose of this document "Who we are" is intended to remain high level to
introduce the community members and their roles. Please note that some of the
feedback is very detailed that probably fits into the TianoCore development
process
 document.

Below are my proposed changes to the document based on the emails.

Please review and let me know if you see any issues by Oct 5. Please also
directly edit the document and let us know what you edited in the document.

Fyi.. my plan is for this page to go live on Oct 9th. This will be a living
document and we can make changes as we discover more.

I have added a new member "Release Manager", added TianoCore admin role, added
responsibilities to the Maintainer and Reviewer section.

I agree that Maintainer is the one who approves final patch. I see the argument
for creating “Approving Reviewer" and "Assistant Reviewer” roles, I am holding
off this proposal to discuss in the upcoming Stewards meeting and make a call.

Release Manager

Role/Responsibilities:

1)The Release Manager is responsible for driving the quarterly Stable Tags. The
Release Manager will plan the features, schedule the release date, create the
Stable Tag with the release notes and announce to the EDK2 community on the
release milestones: Soft feature freeze, hard feature freeze and the final
release of the Stable Tag.

Maintainer Responsibility

1)Maintainer or Reviewer is responsible for timely responses on emails
addressed to them (preferably less than calendar week).

Reviewer Responsibility

1)Reviewer or Maintainer is responsible for timely responses on emails
addressed to them(preferably less than calendar week).

2) Open – Add Approving Reviewer" and "Assistant Reviewer".

TianoCore Admin:

Role: approve/remove access to TianoCore resources such as GitHub, Bugzilla,
groupsIO etc..

Responsibilities:

Respond to emails and monitor role changes in the community (adding/removing
maintainers..)

The request to add the below - Contributor responsibilities. This is too
detailed. I would add this to the development process document.

CONTRIBUTOR

Responsibilities:

If a contributor proposes an incompatible change, the contributor should
coordinate with the platform maintainer and make an agreement on who will
follow up to update the impacted platforms before merging the patch. The
impacted platforms include everything in Edk2 and Edk2Platforms.

Thanks,

Soumya

[edk2-devel] Tianocore community page on who we are - please review

2020-09-25 Thread Soumya Guptha
Dear Community members,

I have drafted a document "who we are", explaining Tianocore community
structure, members of the community, their role and the current development
process. I have drafted this document with the help of the Tianocore Stewards.

We view this as a living document, as our development processes evolve, I will
keep this document updated.

Please review the draft version of the document (link below) and provide your
feedback. Please send it to me, no need to reply all.

I appreciate your input by Friday, Oct 2. After this, I plan on make it live on
our TianoCore wiki site.

[edk2-devel] TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes - August

2020-08-06 Thread Soumya Guptha
TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes

August 6, 2020

Events

UEFI Plugfest:

Virtual sessions via bright talk are being offered during spring.

Trending towards virtual webinars for October plugfest.

Visit UEFI website, events page<https://uefi.org/node/4051> to learn more.

Stable Tag Updates
edk2-stable202008 tag initial planning is added here -
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning

Soft Feature Freeze on Aug 14; Hard Feature Freeze on Aug 21.

Features:

  1. BootGuard TOCTOU vulnerability (CVE-2019-11098)
  2. Ensure NV Variable Confidentiality and Integrity for Platforms Supporting
RPMC.
 * Open: Verify with Liming if this feature is still in plan for August
stable tag
  3. Provide a pcd to disable SHA1 support
  4. ShellPkg: add HttpDynamicCommand

Stewards Meeting download (Mike Kinney)

  1. License usage - few files in the EDK2 repository are not using the
default license (BSD 2 clause + patent). Stewards are looking into those files
that are not using the default license and working on explicitly calling them
out in the readme file so that the downstream consumers are aware of those
files and helping them to consume those files appropriately.
  2. Covered community opens on previously discussed topics:

 * GitHub Pull Request based Code Review Process: Status: Mike plans to
update RFC with the feedback. Community action: Community feedback is needed
before the service can go live. Mike will send the revised RFC in the next week
or two for the vote on these options - 1) Yes, I will use the GitHub pull
request, 2) No, I won't use it, 3) It doesn't make any difference.
 * Line ending conversion - Community Request: we don't have much
resources. We have a set of tasks (including setting up of fork of EDK2,
converting CRLF to LF etc..) everyone in the downstream can identify issues. We
need volunteers to perform the task. Send an email to Mike Kinney

 * Open: Feedback from the community regarding the Git commit message RFC
posted to the rfc mailing list.

* Action: Felix to converse in the mail list, there is already an ongoing
discussion.

 * Open from Felix: Code base fragmentation.

* I noticed that some of the generic features are getting committed
to a platform specific packages, which leads to multiple implementations of the
same functionality, which, in turn, makes edk2 codebase less coherent. We, as a
community, should think about ways to reduce that. A couple of examples:
https://github.com/tianocore/edk2-platforms/tree/master/Features/Intel,
https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/tree/master/ArmPlatformPkg/Drivers/NorFlashDxe

* Discussion around adding new features / components and where should
it land in the repo.

* Discussed review process for Bugzilla. Bugzilla has email
conversations on code reviews. Owner of the bug needs to summarize. Lack of
community engagement in discussing the feature entered in Bugzilla.

* Action: how to use Bugzilla for TianoCore? Liming to start with a
wiki page to train the community.

Status on Community Opens from June:

  * Package movement for RISC-V - Mike Kinney has put up package rules/specs
etc.. Action from stewards to provide update within next week. Status: Work in
progress.
  * New RFC - base tools as a Python PIP module (update from Mike). Community
Action: Reminder, RFC is on the mailing list, please review the RFC. Status:
repository has been created (Mike). Expect some communication (in the upcoming
weeks) around how to change to set up the developer environment. Community to
evaluate the use of base tools.

Acknowledgments:
Community Action: Please send Soumya if you like to acknowledge anyone from the
community, if anyone helped you close bugs or reviewed code etc..Soumya will
post those acknowledgements on the community page.

[edk2-devel] Please re-sync your calendar to get meeting updates

2020-05-26 Thread Soumya Guptha
Dear community members,
The groups.io calendar
(https://edk2.groups.io/g/devel/calendar?calstart=2020-06-04) has shown some
issues in displaying the correct meeting time. When I sync to my outlook, it is
off by an hour.
I figured that this is a reported bug in group.io. I worked around it and
adjusted the calendar so that it accurately displays the time.

Please resync your calendar by subscribing to the calendar
(https://edk2.groups.io/g/devel/ics/7722204/1063275740/feed.ics), so that it
will show the correct meeting time.

Please note that there is no change to our community meetings, they are
scheduled on the first Thursday of every month from 9am-10am (PST) and
7.30pm-8.30pm (PST).

Thanks,
Soumya

Stewards Meeting download (Mike Kinney)

*   stable tag

   *On track.

* line endings - Converting git-repo to line endings. Pushed to Q3 stable
tag
*   edk2-platform2 repo stable-tag

   *Make this a Q3 request
*Some requests from Intel teams for a stable tag on edk2-platforms repo

* Stewards work on clear definitions of what goes into edk2 and
edk2-platforms and add to GitHub, readmes, and Wikis.

** edk2

*** EmulatorPkg

*** Virtual Platforms

*** QEMU

** edk2-platforms

*** physical hardware platforms

* Bugzilla - number of open issues are increasing. We have increased the
frequency and the duration of the meeting to evaluate/address old bugs from the
database.

* Code Review Process: using GitHub based code review as the new code
review method to replace with the email-based code review process. Mike Kinney
has developed a prototype of GitHub code review; Mike has been collecting
feedback with a small set of community members. Expect RFCs sometime this week,
outlining the proposed new code review process.

Community Discussion -

1. There was a discussion around MDE module pkg to smaller pkgs. any
updates on this? we will address later but for now stewards recommending to add
new features to new packages rather than adding to MDE module pkg.
2. Some people are moving from GitHub to Gitlab and other GITs due to
better usability.

Community Action: Bugzilla - we have a growth in the bugs submitted. We request
the community members to check the state of your bugs and help close the bugs

[edk2-devel] TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes - March

TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes
March 5, 2020

Stable Tag Updates:

1. Edk2 stable tag 202002 has been released:
https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/releases/tag/edk2-stable202002

2. Edk2 stable tag 202005 feature planning has started.

*   Features are listed in:
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning
Community Action: Please send if any feature requests that needs to be added to
the upcoming stable tag release.
Opens:

1. Sean requested a few features (variable policy, TLS 1.3 etc.) for
stable tag Q2 release. Sean will follow up with Liming on those features to get
them added to Q2 stable tag.

2. Kevin - Need a fix in EDK2. Insyde engineers don't know where to start.
Documentation is stale or assumes that you understand the open source project.

* Action: We discussed this issue. Kevin to follow the link -
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Development-Process
, this should provide some guidance to the engineers on how to make a fix in
EDK2.

3. Discussion around Bugzilla - Liming to explore adding more detailed
information on bugzilla wiki page

TianoCore Bug Triage - APAC / NAMO Meeting time:

* Scheduled currently from 9:00 ~ 9:30 AM PRC time. Even after the US
daylight saving during March, plan is to keep this meeting from 9:00~9:30AM PRC
time. This time is working well and close to TianoCore Design Meeting,
developers can plan their time and attend these two meetings together.

Community consensus received on the timeslot.

Events:
SPRING 2020 UEFI PLUGFEST<https://uefi.org/Spring2020Plugfest> has been
postponed due to the Coronavirus situation. More details are published here -
https://uefi.org/events/upcoming

Community issues that were brought up last month on the governance and the
process:

1. RFC: The RFC process seems to get only minimal comments and a lot gets
lost in the noise of the lists. There isn't a good "final" state where all
approved RFCs can be seen. The process is entirely driven by the submitter and
thus there is little consistency. I wanted to highlight another project and
how they handle this. https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs As a casual observer
it is very easy to review their RFCs (in flight and approved/rejected) as well
as understand how to create and submit one if so desired. The tooling is just
git/github so it is familiar to the target audience and has a strong ability to
track progress, show history, and be backed up like any code project. They
also leverage github issue tracker for pre rfc conversation and discussions.

2. Bugs/Features/Releases: First the bug triage and scrub is not very
well attended. I know it is hard to get a ww audience together on a call but i
think part of the goal was to offer a public process and a place to
learn/discuss. Is there a better way that still meets those goals? Secondly,
the number of bugs that get discussed is pretty small and the list of open
bugzillas are grower faster than the triage effort. Third, the results are
pretty minimal. Usually a change in owner and a very short comment asking the
owner to look at it is the result of the triage. There is sometimes good
conversation (assuming knowledgeable parties are in attendance) but this is
impractical to capture into the bugzilla while still keeping forward progress.
Finally, as a submitter of a lot of open/unconfirmed bugs it is not very easy
to understand the owners priorities and when the bug will be fixed and merged
to master/stable tag. I am happy to contribute effort to making a new process
but want to understand if others are frustrated by this as well.

Intel Response: We are evaluating the possibility of using git hub for the code
review process. Expect RFCs in the month of March.

Regards,
Soumya

I agree that RFCs get sorely little attention from the community.

... From my personal perspective, it's not because the RFCs are not visible --
I simply don't have time to even *understand* most RFCs for their merits. For
example, I checked out Microsoft's VariablePolicy slides. The design seemed
systematic and I appreciated that, it's just that I couldn't bring myself to
make half-cooked comments (regardless of forum), because those wouldn't do
justice to the topic, and I simply couldn't commit to a deeper involvement.

I can imagine that others appear to ignore several RFCs due to similar
(capacity) reasons.

Personal angle again:
- synchronous communication hampers my throughput
- got quickly demotivated by perceiving significantly less effort from others

Bug triage is a thankless job.

Can you please clarify this suggested conflict (between capturing good
technical discussion in the BZ tickets, and "forward progress")?

I think Bugzilla tickets are the best place to capture the focused analysis of
a bug. I write a *lot* of text in Red Hat bugzillas (most of them are public,
luckily!) -- I want to document my own "adventure" with the issue, even if most
paths prove dead-ends in the end. How does that conflict with "forward
progress"?

Agreed 100%. Lack of visibility into planning / resource allocation is the
worst. I sometimes have no choice but to "shed load" (review requests etc).
What I find important is to be honest about such cases, and state "sorry,
you've been dropped off my queue" reasonably quickly.
Leaving others hanging is one of the *worst* faces of open / distributed
development.

[edk2-devel] TianoCore Community Meeting Minutes - Feb 6

2020-02-07 Thread Soumya Guptha
Community Meeting Minutes: 2-6-20

Agenda:
Thanks to Stephano Cetola for an excellent job driving TianoCore community.
Stephano has transitioned to a new role outside Intel.
Soumya Guptha from Intel is the new Community Manager and will drive the
TianoCore Community activities.

  1. FOSDEM Conference
 * Presentations from our community members:

   i. Capsule
update by Brian Richardson

 ii. Code
first concept by Leif

   iii. 35-40
attendees and they were well received

 * We will share more details on the presentations during the next
community meeting.

  1. Code first RFC stewards meeting update - Mike Kinney
 * Leif has shared on the mailing list
 * We will do EDKII staging repository, inside the staging branch in that
repository. Soumya add the link
 * ECR updates need to be done
 * We need to fully integrate, validate
 *   Code First RFC

https://edk2.groups.io/g/rfc/message/231

Community Action: Read the RFC and provide feedback if you have any opinions
from your engineering teams by next week

Discussion from the community (Felix): As soon as spec is ready, post the links
to the spec in the UEFI forum.
Open: we need to identify the sponsor who can take it to the UEFI forum.
Suggestion is to review the spec and propose this in the forum

  1. Q1 Stable tag update - Soumya/Mike covered updates from Liming Gao

  * Soft freeze for Q2 is scheduled for Feb 14th.
  * One of the Q1 Stable tag features - boot guard is moving to Q2
  * All features are listed in
https://github.com/tianocore/tianocore.github.io/wiki/EDK-II-Release-Planning.
  * The first feature BootGuard TOCTOU vulnerability (CVE-2019-11098)
(https://bugzilla.tianocore.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1614). Its solution is changed.
This feature is moving to Q2 Stable tag.
  * Other features have been fixed except for New BaseCryptLib instances to
compile independently from
callers<https://bugzilla.tianocore.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2420>. Its patch is
under review.

  1. Ideas for Q2 stable tag from Stewards meeting - Mike Kinney

RISCV

 * Line ending conversion in Q2 stable tag

  * Developer github changes may need to occur. Changes around first 2-4wks
of Q2
  * Once the fork is available (by end of Feb), we need community to review,
provide feedback if there is any impact.

 * Submodule conversion in Q2 stable tag

  * There a few places in EDK2 repository carrying copies. Plan is to
modularize and its easier for bug fixes.
  * Ex: compression and decompression code - we will do a review of this
  * Targeted during Q2. We will have RFCs and Bugzilla entries.

 * Wanting RISCV into Q2 stable tag after the above two.

  * We have several patches around RISCV. Plan is to integrate these as part
of Q2 release

 *   Code First comments

https://edk2.groups.io/g/rfc/message/232

https://edk2.groups.io/g/rfc/message/235

 *   Community Action:

  * We are planning for Stable Tag for Q2 - Everyone start thinking and send
your thoughts to Liming Gao
  * We need the community to be engaged and suggest features for Q2, Q3, Q4.
If you like to see any features added, create a Bugzilla entry and work with
Liming Gao (intel) for adding those features and to discuss further.

 * Open: In the next design meeting - when we have a new UEFI spec,
request from the community to ask the community for new features and create a
long term roadmap. Soumya to pass this feedback to Ray.

  1. EDKII Open Source Unit test framework - (Mike Kinney)

 * Collaborative effort from Intel & Microsoft
 *   Background:
Microsoft contributed framework to run tests from UEFI shell
Intel contributed HBFA (Host Based Firmware Analysis)
These two frameworks were combined and simplified to make it simple for
developers to write unit tests

 * This is for a low-level API testing
 * Supports Host Environments for CI agent testing
 * Supports Target Environments (PEI, DXE, SMM, UEFI Shell)
 * Focused on testing interfaces, libraries, and modules
 * Includes cmocka to support mocked interfaces

Community action:

  * Stewards would like the community to start writing Unit tests for open
source FW and start adding test results on the releases.
  * Please look at the details. If you are developing new content or
maintaining existing content, please consolidate and write the unit tests in
this framework, so we can standardize the unit test process.

  1. Upcoming events:

  * UEFI Plugfest - Most of the stewards and few other Intel folks plan on
attending (Brian, Soumya, Mike Kinney etc..)

  1. Opens from the Community Attendees:
 *   Opens from Felix:

  1. Product releases that other companie
