Broadcom wifi drivers in F-14?
Hi All, Does anyone know if the new Broadcom drivers are in a state where they would be in the Fedora 14 kernel? I've seen the release but i've not seen any comment as to the state of them other than they already support mac80211. These are quite a common device and I think it would be nice to see them available in F-14. I could be wrong though. That's still true of the b43 firmware for older (pre-802.11n) devices, but the firmware to go with their new driver is now in linux-firmware.git. Their *original* offering of that new firmware had a stupid licence -- you could only distribute it if you promised to indemnify and defend Broadcom from all related third-party lawsuits. They fixed that though, and I merged it. Nevertheless, everyone I know that has reviewed the newly released driver code is being treated for eye cancer. I wouldn't expect to see it in F-14. Thanks for the update. That's what I suspected as it seems to be the norm for vendor code dumps. something's up with auth in rawhide
Folks, Just did an install of rawhide from today using mirrors.kernel.org and F14-Alpha installer media for the Anaconda runtime. 1). There is no default runlevel 2). I'm dropped into a confused shell on boot. 3). User accounts such as root are not recognized after init 3 4). init 5 starts gdm and I can then login as normal. It might just be broken deps or something. Did anyone else see this? Jon. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

So I remember now that there was a recent Anaconda bug to change the /etc/systemd/system/default.target symlink and of course I was using the alpha media. I'll fix that. But still, should not init 3 have resulted in things like passwd working? :) Jon. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

I read that HP was doing this but haven't verified. Ones who pre-load Linux could presumably calculate that shipping a better supported chip may cost them slightly more initially but save them maintenance headaches and hence eventually work out cheaper, so that would be Dell and HP. I think some of their pre-loaded systems do come with Intel chipsets rather than Broadcom, which are indeed slightly more expensive to procure. I haven't directly heard the rumours Rahul had, though. Some HP laptops pre-loaded with FreeDOS, and comes with a Broadcom chip (BCM4312 rev 01), and the website/manual said: it's certified for SuSE Enterprise Linux and RedFlag Linux (Asian distro based on RHEL) however the wifi is supported by propriety driver from Broadcom (broadcom-wl). So when HP (and others) say that a laptop (or other hardware) is certified for Linux this include hardware with propriety drivers. Another exemple is EmperorLinux they sells some Linux-certified laptops with nVidia hardware. Offline queries? What about offline queries? I assume you know you can do them just fine with yum on the current repodata, and I assume you haven't worked out a way to magically install your repodata in a package packages when it isn't installed and there is no network/CD. So, again, what are you trying to say? Co-operating with other distros? For the half-day PoC, really? But even then, Seth co-operated with Fedora rel-eng's desire that repo-metadata actually be repo-metadata. Which is the only thing anyone said is a must fix for Fedora. It's hard to see what other distros. have required as must fix with app-install, given that none are using it. Call me biased, but doing things in yum because it's the way it always used to be carries little weight when the user experience just sucks really hard. Ok, you're biased. As you've been told numerous times, putting repodata in packages is a terrible idea due to a bunch of known problems, including: 1. How do you keep it in sync. with the repo? 2. How do you deal with the reality of multiple repos? 3. How do you deal with disabling repos? Temporarily? 4. How does anadonda see it? ...this is why repodata is repodata, and we don't just ship fedora-primary.rpm etc. This is not specific to yum, and would still be the case if you finish Zif and Fedora moves to it (or apt/zypper/whatever) instead. I've been working on app-install now with other distro people for nearly two years. I'm not sure I'd be rushing to tell everyone that a half-day PoC was better than my 2 years of work, but each to his own. And, again, it begs the question ... why is no other distro. using it? But then maybe you didn't mean all those two years were spent doing something which is fundamentally impossible to put in repodata, which is the only required change I've seen from anyone in Fedora ($DEITY help us with any of the other things we just wanted). Sometimes I wonder why I should deal with Fedora and all the politics when Ubuntu and Suse just ship something that works. Ubuntu recently got high praise from LWN for Software Center in 10.10 betas. It doesn't use PackageKit at all AFAICS (no PackageKit packages are installed in my VM). It integrates tightly with apt (you know, like showing package history ... like yumex does). Also their package install/remove tool is not gpk-application, and their update tool is not gpk-update-viewer. So, we closed all blocker bugs, we worked through the vast majority of other bugs. I dealt with almost all issues raised in Bill's list, only few small issues left. While there are some bugs open, we did our homework. I was kept in the impression during the last week that these are the criteria to get systemd into F14. But what happens? Out of nowhere completely new criteria are created, and used to bring this project down. Why do we have the blocker bugs scheme if it apparently is irrelevant for final decisions? This is a really unfriendly move: I cannot win a game where the moment the game nears it ends completely new rules are created. Quite frankly, this is a recipe to piss people off, not to make people love developing for Fedora. Yes, I am very disappointed, Fedora. It's also nice to not even bother to ping me for the FESCO discussion. This all reads like a page from the book How to piss people off and scare them away in 7 days. You make up new rules, and then don't bother to invite the folks mostky affected when you apply them. Oh, and next time, if you guys plan a move like that, then please do it a couple of weeks earlier, so that I can find funnier things to do then make you folks happy, since that's apparently not possible. Everybody has a different idea of what Fedora should be, but mine is definitely not one where people with negative energy make the rules and then win by them. There's something seriously wrong with the Fedora development process, folks. And with you, FESCO. You excelled in erratic behaviour, not in steering engineering. I have a couple of questions for you, FESCo, since I honestly don't know and maybe would feel more comfortable knowing: - Has there been any consideration for formalizing the acceptable of absentee votes? - How many members must be present at a meeting for a voting decision to be considered valid? - Is it possible to collect the votes of the folks who were not present? Let me make one thing clear: if FESCo decides that this is the best decision in the interest of Fedora, I trust you all completely to make the right call. I am just coming away with the feeling that this is a little closer to a dice roll - depending on who how many showed up - than I feel is really fair given the magnitude of the issue. This decision while pending has come up as a topic time and time again in Board meetings community QA so it seems a major issue for a lot of folks in Fedora. Therefore, I feel it should be something FESCo is quite sure about. Again, either way the decision goes - fine. My understanding: A quorum (ie, 5 of 9). - Is it possible to collect the votes of the folks who were not present? yes. And I filed a ticket last week to do so: https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/461 I'm pretty bummed that only 3 fesco members bothered to vote there. I'm happy to look for ways to make the other fesco voices heard. Any ideas? I could try making the tickets have some more descriptive subject like HEY VOTE ON THIS PLEASE BEFORE NEXT MEETING: or something. Again, either way the decision goes - fine. It would be nice to hear from the FESCo members not present on how they feel about the decision, though. I'd love to too. The criteria primarily flowed from Notting's discussion of systemd acceptance criteria. Was that well communicated beforehand? No. Did all of those criteria get translated into appropriate bugzilla entries? No. Should we have handled this case better? Absolutely yes. With hindsight it was entirely inappropriate of us to make this decision without attempting to involve you in the discussion. I'm genuinely sorry about that. But since this is the situation that we're in now, I think what we're left with is the opportunity to identify what went wrong with our process and how to avoid this kind of thing in future. Systemd was a relatively unusual feature, in that it's core functionality that impacts every spin, it exposes aspects of its functionality in multiple areas and it didn't exist during our previous release cycle. It's not obvious in advance what criteria we should be using for determining whether this kind of feature is acceptable or not. The right time for doing so would probably have been at the initial feature acceptance stage, and in future I'd like to suggest that for features of a similar scale to systemd we ensure that that's done. It makes the feature acceptance process significantly more difficult and longer, but it's time that will almost certainly otherwise be spent in mailing list discussion of the same thing. Having it presented in a structured manner beforehand is proably a net reduction in difficulty. As an aside, it's also obvious that the degree of scruitiny placed on systemd is grossly disproportionate to features in previous releases. I can see why this is frustrating, but I think it's a necessary part of the development of the distribution. NetworkManager was a disruptive piece of core infrastructure that didn't initially provide feature parity with the nfrastructure it replaced, but NetworkManager was necessary to make Fedora a usable desktop operating system in a large number of use cases. In contrast, we're now at the point where we *have* most of the infrastructure to provide a usable desktop operating system. I think it's entirely justified that our tolerance for churn has diminished, and I think being a little more conservative with new features is entirely in line with modifying our udpate policy to ensure that users have a more consistent experience. That has been the plan from the start based on the fact that not all drivers/hardware support the features GNOME Shell needs. FWIW, I think GNOME Shell deserves extensive testing before made as default as well. FESCo's handling of systemd feature as a process has gaps that needs to be fixed as well. Revisor and live_ram
Excuse me if this is the wrong place to send this. As my fedora ambassador duties, I tend to show other students the neat things you can do with Fedora with my trusty USB drive I always keep on my keychain. More often than not, I'm booting up Fedora into some laptop or university desktop with copious quantities of ram (more than 2G, commonly 4 or more). Also more often than not, I've edited the boot options when it starts up to add the 'live_ram' flag which copies the image into RAM and permits me to unplug the USB drive so I'm not late for class while they explore. I've longed for an option in the stock boot menu to expose this seemingly hidden magic to the general public, so I wrote a tiny patch for python-imgcreate (which is used by revisor). It adds one new option to the isolinux boot menu, labeled Boot and run from RAM. I've tested it by re-spinning the KDE spin and the custom one I use for day-to-day use on my usb drive. Flawless victory. 8 diff --git a/imgcreate/live.py b/imgcreate/live.py index fcb7198..7cfd14c 100644 --- a/imgcreate/live.py +++ b/imgcreate/live.py @@ -518,6 +518,17 @@ menu hiddenrow 5 cfg += self.__get_image_stanza(is_xen, isDracut, fslabel = self.fslabel, isofstype = auto, + liveargs = kern_opts + live_ram, + long = long + and run from RAM, + short = linux-ram + index, + basicvideo = , + xdriver = , + extra = , + index = index) + +cfg += self.__get_image_stanza(is_xen, isDracut, + fslabel = self.fslabel, + isofstype = auto, liveargs = kern_opts, long = long + (Basic Video), short = linux + index, 8 -- Trever Fischer (tdfischer) Fedora Ambassador, KDE Hacker http://wm161.net GPG: C40F2998 hkp://wwwkeys.pgp.net -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel
