Re: prefered way of configuring X11 keyboard layouts in F18

If that is insufficient, please file bugs against systemd. It seems that the virtual console layout is migrated ok, but the x11 part is not. This is what I get on my two upgraded F18 boxes: [root@turre ~]# localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 VC Keymap: fi X11 Layout: n/a [root@turre ~]# The n/a part is the problem as it falls back to US keyboard. localectl manual says both set-keymap and set-x11-keymap apply to both the keymaps unless --no-convert is specified, but that doesn't seem to happen in practise: [root@turre ~]# localectl set-keymap fi [root@turre ~]# localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 VC Keymap: fi X11 Layout: n/a [root@turre ~]# localectl set-x11-keymap fi [root@turre ~]# localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 VC Keymap: fi-latin1 X11 Layout: fi [root@turre ~]# localectl set-keymap fi [root@turre ~]# localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 VC Keymap: fi X11 Layout: fi X11 Model: pc105 X11 Options: terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp It's a bit bizarre: set-keymap doesn't seem to find fi as the closest matching keyboard for x11 (it probably should), set-x11-keymap considers fi-latin1 to be the closest matching keymap for fi, but in this specific order its possible to get both set to fi. Only it now adds additional model + options there, whatever the reason. - Panu - The conversion (as systemd-localed calls it) works really poorly also for the Czech keymaps/layouts. 'cz' X11 layout is converted to 'cz-lat2' which works like 'us' until you hit the Pause Break key. This is really unfortunate especially when people set their LUKS password in Anaconda with the 'cz' X11 layout activated and then they are supposed to enter it again with the 'cz-lat2' keymap during boot. -- Vratislav Podzimek Anaconda Rider | Red Hat, Inc. | Brno - Czech Republic -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

Okey that's also something. Because last am I check rpi-update didn't work on F17 image. I'd advise the commenter to open a new one on mkfs or anaconda to change the boot sector padding. It's part of the filesystem format, there's no way to change it. This may be true, but not a priori. extN has feature flags which can be used to enable leaving more space, or other larger space at a constant offset. For example, the first otherwise-allocatable filesystem block might be permanently allocated for use by booting. There may be other ways, too. If not, then there is ext5. Deprecate ext4 for its mistake in not allowing a maximal-sized filesystem block [8KiB] for the boot block. And oh by the way, several years ago ext3 was fixed in a non-backwards compatible way involving symbolic links. The fix changed the interpretation of on-disk file system data! -- -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

Blocker Bug Voting and Conversation
I don't think that anyone is a huge fan of the current blocker bug process. I realize that the people most affected by the process are really busy right now but I also think that it wouldn't be a bad thing to start a conversation while the process is active and at its most painful. I don't really want this to devolve into a long flamewar about how bad the process is (I probably spend more time with the process than most people, I know it has issues) but I would like to start a conversation about some of it. This conversation affects both test@ and devel@, so please try to send replies to both lists. I'm trying to think through methods to improve the process but I ended up with some questions that need more than just my input: How useful is it to have the blocker votes and conversation in the bug? I think that it needs to be public, archived and easily accessible from affected bugs but I'm questioning the value of having conversations about blocker status within bugzilla comments. Affected Devs: - Do you find the blocker related conversations in bugzilla comments helpful? Annoying? Don't really care? - Do you want to be more involved in the blocker process? Less involved and just notified about status changes? Affected Voters: - Do you vote on blocker status in bug comments? - Would you vote on blocker status more often if you could easily vote outside of meetings? - Do you want to receive status updates on the bugs you vote on, even if those status updates don't deal directly with blocker status? Anyhow, helpful thoughts would be appreciated. Hopefully we can improve the process so that it's less painful for everyone and maybe even more useful (at the very least, less difficult to understand). Re: Yum Package Remove Order
Besides a call to /sbin/chkconfig perhaps I see no reason for anything to be done in %post, %preun etc. in a setup like the on you describe. These scripts are supposed to be used for very simple and very unlikely commands like adding a user or a service to boot, they should not install or remove files (directly) of any kind, there are other sections that have the appropriate mechanisms to do that and detect problems at rpmbuild time instead of when you are installing/uninstalling. Only it now adds additional model + options there, whatever the reason. pc105 is just the standard model that XKB uses. and the option is there to get zapping behaviour when the server is started (until that option is overwritten by a desktop environment or other client) Cheers, Peter -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

Re: [Bug 872826] f18 anaconda - no option to install bootloader to a partition
On Dec 2, 2012, at 7:57 PM, John Reiser jrei...@bitwagon.com wrote: Fourteen years ago in 1998 I published a boot loader for i386 that loaded linux kernel and initrd using filesystem lookup by name from ext2, occupying 446 bytes of MBR plus 2*510 bytes of bootblock from ext2. The space also allowed some tens of bytes of kernel command line. So must use block lists was not true then. Yeah obviously I asked the wrong question, again. I will digress instead of asking a new (bad) question: 1. Another possible work around. In addition to the do nothing and install to MBR + MBR gap options, is the make a core.img and grub.cfg, but do not install anything to MBR, the MBR gap, or use block lists option. This core.img could be called by another boot manager, presumably already installed and in use by the user, the one they don't want stepped on in the first place. If they load the /boot/grub2/core.img, it will in turn load the grub.cfg and they get a GRUB menu as expected. To do this anaconda would use grub2-mkimage instead of grub2-install; it would use grub2-mkconfig as it currently does to generate the grub.cfg. I think that work around satisfies most concerns, albeit without automatically linking the existing boot manager to the core.img file. The user wouldh have to do that themselves (rather than relying merely on a change in the MBR active flag). 2. Incidentally, Btrfs has a 64KB offset before the start of the file system, which I confirmed on the btrfs list is intended for a boot mananager/loader. Because of how btrfs works, block lists are not merely not recommended but proscribed, the --force option fails, but as it turns out you don't need to use block lists with Btrfs because core.img and then some will happily fit in the rather enormous boot loader region completely contiguously intact. And I've confirmed that it does work, both installation of GRUB2 into this region, as well as it being loaded and functioning (ergo 100% Btrfs boot, even with boot and root in subvols). So the solution to the problem maybe for F19/F20 is actually Btrfs by default, and then grub2-install to a partition can be employed once again and simply just work without extra effort on the part of the user as is the case with work around 1.
