I'd be happy to add a guideline for this and fix up existing packages
  if this seems amenable.

If you can write a tool that makes it easy to fix opentype licensing
fields at build time, I'll be delighted to support any guideline change
that mandated its use. However if you go in this direction please check on
the fonts and openfontlibrary list knowledgeable people agree there are no
wrong side-effect (this will reach debian font packagers at least BTW)

The guideline should be to ask upstream to fix the meta data. In case of
missing license text (e.g. source code with a GPL header but no copy of
the GPL itself), it is also upstream's task to fix it and the packager's
to ask for it. And if upstream fixes it, the debian font packagers do
not need to replicate Fedora's effort.

Can we please use a different name, like webdata? The term asset
  seems to scare some people.

At least the directory in /usr/share really should have web or
something in the name. Someone who does ls /usr/share and sees
assets won't understand that it's web related. In the URL namespace
web isn't necessary, because in that context it's implicit.

Why web and not www? For variable www data the default path is
/var/lib/www, therefore for static content /usr/share/www sounds more
appropriate.

That rather looks like CMakeism, which is strange in this case as Mirall
has its own fix for that (

This is not an arm specific issue. in the past systemd was pulled into
the minimal buildroot via deps. That has changed and its no longer
pulled in. on x86 as well as arm.

The packages that are explicitly pulled in are:
bash bzip2 coreutils cpio diffutils fedora-release findutils
gawk gcc gcc-c++ grep gzip info make patch redhat-rpm-config
rpm-build sed shadow-utils tar unzip util-linux which xz

There is no need to BuildRequire any of them, what they pull in is
subject to change and should be added as a BuildRequires

Re: Perl packaging guidelines

2013-08-04 Thread Emmanuel Seyman
* Petr Šabata [08/07/2013 14:25] :

 Second, the %{__perl} macro.
What are the benefits of using this (subjectively) ugly macro
compared to simple 'perl'? The only case in which I find it
useful is when we actually require the absolute path, e.g. in
 shebang corrections.

The two main cases I see are:

a) future proofing

One day, perl may move to another location than /usr/bin/perl (yes, I know it's
unlikely). On that day, you can change one macro (by modifying %{__perl}) or
change all your spec files. I know which one I prefer.

b) brokeness proofing

While simple 'perl' works in a mock/koji context, our sources rpms got rebuilt
in other build-systems, not all of them as solid as mock/koji. I can't
guarantee that plain 'perl' will work the same way that %{__perl} does in those
build-systems.

 Third, the MODULE_COMPAT macro.

See above.

 Fourth, ExtUtils::MakeMaker vs Module::Build.
Module::Build is currently being deprecated and removed from
core, ExtUtils::MakeMaker becoming, once again, the preferred
way. Our guidelines should be updated to reflect that.

+1

 And fifth, installation paths.
I suppose the guidelines should explicitly state the vendor
 paths should be used.

+1

Re: Perl packaging guidelines

2013-08-04 Thread Emmanuel Seyman
* Ralf Corsepius [08/07/2013 14:57] :

When perl modules move away, they break building - I.e. these can
easily be re-added at any time, when necessary.

Waiting until a module build has failed to fix it sucks, imho.

It's one thing to have internal mass rebuilds create FTBFS reports. It's
another to have users and downstream distributions notice this and force them
to create bug reports to have these fixed. It creates busy work for them and
conveys low packaging quality.

Conversely, adding everything, only meas to reflect the dependency
state which was valid at one single point in time.

The same thing happens if you add a BR because of a FTBFS. There's no guarantee
that it will not beome useless at some point in time.
