According to powertop approx. 5.5W is display backlight and 1W is the rest of system. Just to give a reply that Fedora is not bad on all configs/hardware. Well until yesterday I didn't know that Fedora didn't install / configure any of these packages. I've installed tlp and powertop, I didn't know powertop did anything other than monitor. I'll see what powertop --auto-tune does. I don't even know if the tlp package has enabled anything either. I wonder if having tlp installed and running powertop --auto-tune will conflict / fight each other... Time to try stuff out. You might also look at tuned... (I think it was mentioned early in the thread). tuned-adm profile powersave I've probably said this before, but I wouldn't trust tuned one bit, after I was told that 1) no measurements were ever taken 2) no attempts to make beneficial configurations the defaults were made (which is probably right, given that they'd have no data to back it up). Probably a good source of tunables if you don't want to read distro forums yourself, but light on the scientific method. Also: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/20/html-single/Power_Management_Guide/index.html Of course it would be nice if this stuff just did the right thing and you didn't have to run any commands or read any guides. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Maybe not in a month but who knows - f22 cycle? Perhaps this will be another victim of (in my opinion not very wise) the decision not to have Python 3 in RHEL-7. For plenty of people (and servers) who use RHEL-7 python 3 is still a problem. Yes, I know about Software Collections. And yes, I haven’t managed to make it working properly on my system (e.g., I cannot just run a random python3 script with '#!/usr/bin/python3' shebang with just software from our packages); and there are almost no packaged libraries for Python 3. Self Introduction: Ethan Gafford
Hello all, My name is Ethan Gafford; I was recently hired by Red Hat to work upstream on the openstack-sahara project, as well as to perform downstream packaging. I've about 5 years in software thus far (after a prior career in nursing.) I've specialized in data processing and analytics, data ingestion, web service and API development, and deployment automation/CI. I'm currently sponsored to maintain the *sahara* packages. Though I don't have an enormous amount of open source experience to date, I have been an advocate of open-source software and development methods within my private companies for a few years, and in my last job led a team of prior .NET engineers to become dedicated Pythonistas who never plan to look back. I have taught and presented on OSS tech including Python, NoSQL, and Hadoop. I'm overjoyed to now have the freedom to directly contribute to the open source movement, and through it to be part of the example that OSS provides to the world that flat collaboration and meritocracy, beyond just being good in the abstract, outperform proprietorship and hierarchy any day of the week. I look forward to working with you all. Review swap -- Budgie Desktop
Hi all, I'm packaging budgie-desktop, an elegant lightweight desktop (with Chrome OS-inspired aesthetics) that integrates well with GNOME 3; review request here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1170875 More about Budgie here https://evolve-os.com/budgie/ The main developer (who for now maintains a Fedora 20 build in OBS) is enthusiastic about this package being officially available ( https://plus.google.com/112089348047460560288/posts/C7uyrMypExb ) so hopefully this can happen soon. The package is quite straightforward -- autotools with Vala and pkgconfig dependencies -- will swap it for one or two review requests of your choosing. There's only one major distro now with a calendar-driven release cadence, and quite frankly I don't know how they do it. Everyone else is either rolling, try for calendar but don't ship if it's fatally broken (Fedora and openSUSE), or ship when it's solid and stable and supportable (Debian and RHEL). I'm probably going to run at least one of my machines on Rawhide after the F21 release, but I think the sweet spot is what openSUSE has done - a stable release with a nominal eight-month cycle and a rolling release (Tumbleweed) layered over that. I'd like Fedora to at least consider something similar. Minor version updates are allowed by the update policy, and packages like Firefox are in effect on a rolling release anyway. I believe R is also updated quite regularly. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Updates_Policy#All_other_updates Do we have the manpower for a Tumbleweed-style repo that is built against the stable release as its core? Or perhaps the present upgrade policy is sufficient, and the lack of updates Ed cite is already a reflection of a lack of available manpower to update the packages he mentioned (apart from PostgreSQL, where we wouldn't want to upgrade mid-release). Ed, could you perhaps cite specific R and Python tools where you find the current version to be insufficiently up-to-date? Or perhaps the present upgrade policy is sufficient, and the lack of updates Ed cite is already a reflection of a lack of available manpower to update the packages he mentioned (apart from PostgreSQL, where we wouldn't want to upgrade mid-release). PostgreSQL is a good example - 9.4 is in the release candidate stage right now and will probably be declared stable within a month. If it doesn't at least make it into updates-testing before F22, I'll be adding 9.4 from the PostgreSQL project's RPM repos or building it from source. I need a major new feature - Binary indexable JSON storage. GDAL and QGIS are other examples; I ran for a couple of months building gdal 1.11.0 from source and installing QGIS from non-Fedora repos because I needed those features and they weren't in updates-testing. If the packages are at least in Rawhide, I suppose I can download them to a local repo and use them from there. Ed, could you perhaps cite specific R and Python tools where you find the current version to be insufficiently up-to-date? I'm not a Python programmer and I don't currently use the Fedora RPMs for most R packages. I have to have all the package building infrastructure anyhow, so it's easier to build them from source. I can name two instances during the F21 release cycle where I needed newer packages than what was in the F21 branch. One was nikola 7.1.0, which is a Python package, and the other was nodejs-glob, which is an npm package. In both cases I had to go upstream to get them. I assume those will make it into updates before the F22 branch ;-). We could perhaps create a tracker for update requests, and provide a Bugzilla template for it linked to from the package database and from the Fedora homepage - that way we could prioritize what packages users really want updated. That does seem like a good way to do it. Would that also have an impact on the automation / testing queues once the source RPMs were built by a human package maintainer? -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

The updates-testing repository is only supposed to be used for packages that will eventually hit the regular updates repository. It is NOT a dumping ground for incompatible upgrades. And unfortunately, a new PostgreSQL IS incompatible, because if you just run yum update, your databases will cease to work. You have to actually dump them BEFORE doing the upgrade (or downgrade PostgreSQL for the dump, or install the old version in parallel, which is not supported by the RPMs), then do the upgrade, and then import the dump. As long as upstream does not change this migration policy, it will NEVER be possible to provide newer PostgreSQL release series un updates. I am generally in favor of doing version upgrades in updates, but when they are disruptive, as in PostgreSQL's case, it's just not possible. Cases where an upgrade does not make sense in updates include, but are not limited to: * not being able to load user data (which includes databases and documents, but also configuration files, game savestates, etc.) from the previous version, or requiring manual migration for it (see PostgreSQL), * removed features, * major UI changes, * soname bumps in libraries used by too many packages for a grouped update, etc. For QGIS, I don't know whether a version upgrade is possible in a stable release (see above), but I can check with the maintainer (Volker Fröhlich), or you can ask him directly. [Bug 1051110] perl-PlRPC: various flaws [fedora-all]
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1051110 --- Comment #9 from Petr Pisar ppi...@redhat.com --- (In reply to pjp from comment #8) Since the package has been retired from rawhide and the issue won't be fixed in earlier releases, it is good to close this bug as CLOSED WONTFIX with due comment about it. Which would be utterly wrong. Because it is fixed in Fedora ≥ 21. So WONTFIX does not apply here. Current state is more like NEXTRELEASE. which changes on the December 9th when CURRENTRELEASE would appropriate. Also because this is a security bug, you cannot close it as WONTFIX. You have to keep it open until the latest supported Fedora release expires. This practise is also supported by the previous paragraph demonstrating the resolution is all but stable. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
