Re: Unexpected qadevel outage

2015-02-02 Thread Tim Flink

Tim Flink tfl...@redhat.com wrote:

I'm not sure what happened but the machine hosting qadevel became
unresponsive sometime in the last 12 hours and is not recoverable.

I'm going to be rebuilding the host today but until I'm done,
phabricator and the other services on qadevel will not be available.
I'll update this thread as I make progress towards getting everything
 working again.

Due to the exploits of one Mr. Uiterwijk, qadevel is back up and
running.

I'm still going to work on moving it to more long-term hosting, though.
I severely underestimated how much work would be required to rebuild the
machine and don't want to be caught unprepared again.

2015-02-02 Thread Dan Williams
On Mon, 2015-02-02 at 06:19 +0100, Björn Persson wrote:
 Dan Williams wrote:
I'd also point out that there are three different NetworkManager GUIs,
 and one TUI:

 1) GNOME Shell network settings - not really targeted for server
environments, has a smaller set of options that are suitable for
 desktop/workstation use-cases

 2) nm-connection-editor - presents a larger set of options than #1, and
only modifies *saved configuration*, not runtime configuration. eg, it
is basically a much more capable system-config-network but without the
 up/down buttons

 3) KDE's network configuration dialogs

 4) nmtui - a slightly simpler version of nm-connection-editor intended
for GUI-less environments, like a more capable
 system-config-network-tui

#2 and #4 obviously run much better in desktop environments like LXDE,
XFCE, etc where the full GNOME stack is not available.

It's important to note which one you're talking about when suggesting
improvements, since they are developed by different projects and each
one has a different target audience. That said, I understand it can be
confusing which one is for who and available where...

I bet most users aren't even aware that there are multiple user
interfaces for network configuration, and therefore they also aren't
aware that there is a need to specify which of them one is talking
 about.

What's the recommended way for a user to find out which of the three
GUIs it is that pops up when one clicks on a menu entry, when the
window title is something generic like network configuration and
there is no about dialog? Run ps -ef and look for recently started
 processes?

Assuming the current versions of the various DEs, then in GNOME, the
thing you're looking at is the GNOME tools. If you're in KDE, then it's
the KDE tools. If you're in XFCE/LXDE, then it's likely
nm-connection-editor. So I guess I should say what DE are you
running...

Re: on software updates

2015-02-02 Thread Casey Jao
To clarify, I know that one can bypass the restart prompt by using dnf on
the command line. But my concerns pertained to the average user, who is
likely not familiar with the command line. And the average user when asked
to restart for *everything* (such as a browser update) might grow
increasingly inclined to keep postponing updates. That's what users were
conditioned to do on Windows, and it got so bad Microsoft started resorting
to extreme measures like forced reboots.

What's the expected time frame for the transition to sandboxed apps and
well-defined platforms? That seems like a major undertaking that will take
some time to mature. I'm just wondering whether anything can be or might be
done to improve the user experience in the interim.

Are there any plans to let packages specify that they do not require a
total system reboot to be updated?

The other day, Gnome software prompted me to reboot just to update
google chrome. Given that nothing depends on chrome, and also that the
Linux version of chrome is specifically designed to tolerate having its
 files on disk overwritten
 (http://neugierig.org/software/chromium/notes/2011/08/zygote.html),
rebooting the whole system seems overkill to ensure a successful update

ignore all that GUI update crap and just use yum upgrade
no need for reboot a linux system for every update
 that's not windows

lsof | grep DEL | grep /usr will show you processes you may conisder to
restart (and not the needs-restarting command was never relieable here)

--- Comment #2 from Petr Pisar ppi...@redhat.com ---
This release low-case all license identifiers. Upstream probably thinks the
`slname' property is a CPANSPECv1 identifier. I will remove the
Correct-Software-License-s-identifiers-for-LGPL-lice.patch as it's probably a
way upstream want to go. This this release will go only to Fedora 22.

Seems to me, as if this package is victim of rpm's perl-package
 dependency
 generator adding a bogus R: perl(authentication).

 Indeed.

I'm certain the error is caused by line 1320 of
 lib/Net/Twitter/Role/API/REST.pm:

 require authentication.

(which is the second half of a sentence).

This bug is more interesting than I initially thought.

When building the same rpm in mock for f20 or f21, the resulting rpms
 do not
carry this bogus Require: perl(authentication). This only happens for
 rawhide.

i.e. something in rpm, mock or perl has regressed - Ideas, anyone?

My weekly rebuilds show the change between 2014-12-16 and 2015-01-06
 https://ppisar.fedorapeople.org/perl_rebuild/scratch/2015-01-06/index.xhtml#pperl-Net-Twitter.

Difference between build roots reveals, besides other things, upgrading
 perl-generators from 1.01 to 1.02.

You are right on the spot - I rebuilt perl-Net-Twitter in f21
 mock-chroots with perl-generators-1.00, perl-generators-1.01,
perl-generators-1.02. The regression appears when using
 perl-generators-1.02.

= The origin is the changes between perl-generators-1.01 and
 perl-generates-1.02.

I found the source of issue. I'll provide new version of perl-generators
today.

I apologize for the problems.

We write to the yumdb, I don't know where and how yum stores the
history info. It would be a little odd for PK to insert history items
(i.e. that yum didn't actually do) as we're actually using a different
depsolver, so yum might not be able to undo the action.

Neither YUM can always undo the action. But it would be nice to have the
change recorded.

Re: Making perl-sig a watcher on all perl packages

2015-02-02 Thread Emmanuel Seyman
* Petr Šabata [02/02/2015 10:55] :

 Why just Fedora?

When I was looking for perl modules not watched by the Perl SIG, I was focusing
on the master branch and not so much on the stable branches. While he was
handling the ticket, pingou asked whether I wanted him to do the adding for F20
and F21 and I said yes. I would have been happy just with the master branch.

Shouldn't perl-sig watch EPEL as well?

I'm not sure (and my gut instinct is to say 'no'). Perl in EPEL has been broken
for years now (perl-Authen-Simple has had missing deps) and nobody really seems
to be interested in fixing it so adding perlsig as a watcher seems beside the
point.

I'ld rather see a EPEL Perl SIG created consisting of people who actually care
about the state of the EPEL modules.

Dependency chain issue...

2015-02-02 Thread Nathanael d. Noblet
Hello,

I have F21 Workstation installed. I installed liveusb-creator and the
following was the dependency chain installed.

http://www.fpaste.org/180713/34735142/

The real odd parts are all the multi-media being installed. This seems
to stem from phonon being included in the chain. I don't really know why
it is. Is this a bug?

Problem #1 is that PyQt4 is not split into subpackages for the different Qt
modules being bound, so you end up with the Phonon and QtWebKit bindings
installed, which drag in the rest. So far we have chickened out of splitting
PyQt4, we'll need to look into this issue in the KDE SIG.

Problem #2 is that you are getting phonon-backend-vlc instead of phonon-
backend-gstreamer, which ends up dragging in a lot of dependencies. Try
using --exclude=phonon-backend-vlc to force yum to pick -gstreamer instead.
This is a result of phonon-backend-vlc being in RPM Fusion (and you having
that enabled). It gets preferred by yum for some reason (shorter name? fewer
direct dependencies? something else? I don't know which of the many criteria
is being used here). I have always said that having phonon-backend-vlc in
the repositories is a bad idea (because you end up with a different default
backend depending on the repositories you have selected, leading to a
support nightmare), but I wasn't listened to. (In fact, this even affects
builds of KDE packages in RPM Fusion, where phonon-backend-vlc also gets
dragged in, and thus the KDE packages cannot be rebuilt against a new FFmpeg
before VLC is. That sucks.)

 Yes, see https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/SandboxedApps -- basically,
you can't do updates of rpm-sourced system-wide app deployments
without a reboot in a safe way.

That's absolute nonsense. Updating had always worked that way before you
changed to offline updates. It just works. And still does with Apper or with
the command-line tools.

For leaf applications, updating the application package requires only a
restart of that application to pick up the new version, and in almost all
cases the old version will keep running just fine, it'll just not be updated
until you restart it.

Is it really worth announcing the soname bump in such a case? A library only
used by one application can effectively be treated as private, especially if
you're taking care of the rebuild.

(I'm pointing this out because this isn't the first soname bump of this kind
 being announced.)

While you make a point, I prefer to see announce for every soname bump
(including those with very little dependency) than taking the risk of missing
one (which of course would be an important one).

Re: on software updates

2015-02-02 Thread Miloslav Trmač
On 31 January 2015 at 21:57, Casey Jao casey@gmail.com wrote:
Are there any plans to let packages specify that they do not require a
  total
  system reboot to be updated?

 Yes, see https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/SandboxedApps -- basically,
you can't do updates of rpm-sourced system-wide app deployments
without a reboot in a safe way.

There are classes of RPMs that definitely can be done without a reboot in a
safe way (documentation-only; packages with a single executable and no
libraries / separate data files; and quite a few other cases), and letting
packagers opt them in to being updated without a reboot seems like a clear
improvement on the status quo.

I don’t know, perhaps they are currently rare enough that it is not worth it;
but it seems to me that we will need vaguely that kind of infrastructure in any
case (if only to allow updates of the sandboxed apps).
