Mikolaj Izdebski mizde...@redhat.com writes: I don't know why 0.9.38-3 was built, it looks like unnecessary build. Yes, it is. About 30 packages diverged after f22-boost side-tag had been created. It's impractical to check by hand whether any happened to be already rebuilt in the short window since the merge. So I just took the list of merge conflicts and scheduled a rebuild for all of them, and harfbuzz ended up being rebuilt twice. Re: on software updates
On Wed, 2015-02-04 at 07:00 -0800, Casey Jao wrote: I understand where you are coming from and that a fedora user is likely to see frequent updates of lots of other packages anyway. But on slower moving distros where systems components rarely get more than security updates, browsers might be one of the more frequently updated pieces of software. Perhaps my experience is atypical (especially since I'm on F21!), but after last week's Google Chrome-only update notification (which was the impetus for this report), today I got another Gnome software prompt to restart just for google-chrome-stable. Yes, see https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/SandboxedApps -- basically, you can't do updates of rpm-sourced system-wide app deployments without a reboot in a safe way. There are classes of RPMs that definitely can be done without a reboot in a safe way (documentation-only; packages with a single executable and no libraries / separate data files; and quite a few other cases), and letting packagers opt them in to being updated without a reboot seems like a clear improvement on the status quo. It'd only be an improvement if users often saw a set of updates which *only* contained such packages. In my experience that rarely if ever happens. Please don't top-post. I was considering the tighter characterization of a 'safe' app to update, not your broader one. I am happy to defer to those who've spent more time dealing with it than me - i.e. hughsie - when they say that, no, it isn't really 'safe' to update your web browser online. (I'm equally happy to say 'meh' and go ahead and do it anyway, but that's my *personal* decision for *myself*, it doesn't mean that's the appropriate default for Fedora). Even on 'slower moving' distributions I'd think it'd be relatively rare for an update set to *only* include packages which contained docs or static data or a very static application. And this is the *Fedora* devel@ list, so I'm not really sure how relevant these 'slower moving' distributions are to us? Here's the FPC ticket: https://fedorahosted.org/fpc/ticket/498 In commenting on the ticket, I realised something fundamental: we really do need to keep the RPM macro and the binary symlink in sync. That way the unversioned shebang lines in any packaged scripts can match up with the unversioned macros in the spec file. Which seems to bring the viable options down to just two: * switch the symlink to Python 3 as well (I don't like this due to the impact on end users with custom scripts) * hold off on switching the default for the time being and instead focus on enabling explicitly opting in to Python 3 in EPEL Cheers, Nick. -- Nick Coghlan | ncogh...@gmail.com | Brisbane, Australia ___ python-devel mailing list python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/python-devel

[Bug 1165554] Request to retire perl-ZMQ-LibZMQ3
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1165554 --- Comment #2 from Thomas Spura toms...@fedoraproject.org --- (In reply to Petr Pisar from comment #1) There is a ZMQ which is a wrapper above ZMQ-LibZMQ2 and ZMQ-LibZMQ3 to provide common abstract interface. It's author does not yet included ZMQ-LibZMQ4 support but he doubted about zeromq API stability https://github.com/lestrrat/p5-ZMQ/issues/29. I had the same doubts a while back, but I have changed my mind. ZeroMQ seems to be a lot more stable, that it was a few years ago. There are also some reports, that older versions run quite unstable, so it would be nice to not use them anymore... My perl knowledge is limited, so I cannot test if ZMQ-LibZMQ3 would work with version 4. [perl-Test-Perl-Critic] Update to 1.03
commit 5997b85a7545ac74fb06c208fe0daa4250f245da Author: Paul Howarth p...@city-fan.org Date: Wed Feb 4 11:24:39 2015 + Update to 1.03 - New upstream release 1.03 - all_critic_ok() will now run tests in parallel over multiple cores. So if you have 8 cores, your Perl::Critic tests could run 8x faster. However, the actual performance depends on the size and shape of your code base and your Perl::Critic configuration. - If you're using the critic_ok() function directly (perhaps because you want more control over which files are tested) then you won't see any performance boost. I recommend gathering your list of files first, and then passing the list to all_critic_ok(). - The deprecated function all_code_files() has now been removed from Test::Perl::Critic. Re: mongodb.conf rename
On 02/02/2015 05:01 PM, Miloslav Trmač wrote: Hello, in Fedora Rawhide there is a new major version of mongoDB 2.6. With this new version names of mongoDB configuration files will be changed - to reflect names used in upstream rpms (http://downloads-distro.mongodb.org/repo/redhat/os/x86_64/RPMS/ ) mongodb.conf - mongod.conf mongodb-shard.conf - mongos.conf In Fedora mongodb.conf is used from version 12. If this change should be a problem, please contact me... Is it possible to do something (write RPM scriptlets, or perhaps ship symlinks) to make this transparent and effortless to users? Let's look at it closer.. First, we need to do all the magic only if previous version is 2.6. One idea is that we could use %pre script and do the following in it: If /etc/mongodb.conf is there (that means we upgrade from 2.4), move it to /etc/monogd.conf and create a symlink /etc/mongodb.conf /etc/mongod.conf There is one issue I see with this way -- generally when we bring new content during update and the config file hasn't changed, rpm replaces the content and creates config.rpmnew otherwise. The solution above wouldn't behave like this. Another idea is that we can just ship new config and let the old one either be backed-up (into config.rpmsave in case it has been changed) or removed. Then in case /etc/mongodb.conf.rpmsafe exists, its content could be copied to /etc/mongod.conf, while the original /etc/mongod.conf would be copied into /etc/mongod.conf.rpmnew. Hopefully, that should handle the same user experience as when user upgrades ordinary. Just thinking laudly, so there may be some drawbacks or better solutions. Re: on software updates
I understand where you are coming from and that a fedora user is likely to see frequent updates of lots of other packages anyway. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

I had to rebuild the new version again after f22-boost was merged into f22. I don't know why 0.9.38-3 was built, it looks like unnecessary build. Thanks David and Mikolaj. I am not sure if separate tag for libicu could have finished its rebuilds earlier than building it with boost tag.I actually got more confused when pmachata built harfbuzz without giving specific information in the changelog. Well ideally, when you noticed that somebody touched your package and you are going to update it, you should check where the updated package actually is. If you built it once again in boost tag, the things would be simpler. But yes, the changelog might be better and make a difference. The Fedora's mass rebuild changelog usually contains links to wiki and for Ruby rebuilds, we link to change proposal wiki page, which might be (I believe) good starting point to know what is going on.
