Re: minimal requirements for subpackage named common

Another way of avoiding this problem is to make sure these files are 100% identical. This includes modification time, user, permissions and of course content. But as you are using the same files from the identical build I kinda wonder where such differences could come from... Re: F23 System Wide Change: Disable SSL3 and RC4 by default
On Tue, 2015-04-28 at 06:10 -0400, Jan Kurik wrote: = Proposed System Wide Change: Disable SSL3 and RC4 by default = https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/RemoveSSL3andRc4 Change owner(s): Nikos Mavrogiannopoulos n...@redhat.com This change will disable by default the SSL 3.0 protocol and the RC4 cipher in components which use the system wide crypto policy. That is, gnutls and openssl libraries, and all the applications based on them. == Detailed Description == There are serious vulnerabilities known to the SSL 3.0 protocol, since a decade. Recent attacks (e.g., the POODLE issue #1152789) take advantage of them, negating the secrecy offerings of the protocol. The RC4 cipher is also considered cryptographically broken, and new attacks against its secrecy are made known every year (#1207101). Since attacks are only getting better, we should disable these broken protocols and ciphers system wide. == Scope == * Proposal owners: The crypto-policies package has to be updated to accommodate the new policies. * Other developers: Should verify that their package works after the change. That is that their package doesn't require only SSL 3.0, or only the RC4 ciphersuites. If their package requires these options due to design, they should consider contacting upstream to update the software. If that is not possible, or this support is needed to contact legacy servers, they should consider not using the system wide policy, and make that apparent in the package documentation. * Release engineering: This feature doesn't require coordination with release engineering. * Policies and guidelines: The packaging guidelines do not need to be changed. For clarification: This is only changing the default - SSL 3.0 is still available if specifically enabled? If so, we need to include documentation on enabling it. Bigger question - should we deprecate SSL 3.0 and plan to remove it in F25? (F25 gives people a year to prepare after being notified of deprecation in F23.) We are looking at deprecating and ultimately removing a larger set of ciphers: /* 56-bit DES domestic cipher suites */ TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, TLS_DHE_DSS_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, SSL_RSA_FIPS_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, TLS_RSA_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, TLS_DH_anon_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, TLS_KRB5_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, TLS_KRB5_WITH_DES_CBC_MD5 /* export ciphersuites with 1024-bit public key exchange keys */ TLS_RSA_EXPORT1024_WITH_RC4_56_SHA, TLS_RSA_EXPORT1024_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, /* export ciphersuites with 512-bit public key exchange keys */ TLS_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_RC4_40_MD5, TLS_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_RC2_CBC_40_MD5, TLS_DHE_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_DES40_CBC_SHA, TLS_DHE_DSS_EXPORT_WITH_DES40_CBC_SHA, TLS_DH_anon_EXPORT_WITH_DES40_CBC_SHA, TLS_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_DES40_CBC_SHA, TLS_KRB5_EXPORT_WITH_RC2_CBC_40_SHA, TLS_KRB5_EXPORT_WITH_DES_CBC_40_SHA, TLS_KRB5_EXPORT_WITH_RC2_CBC_40_MD5, TLS_KRB5_EXPORT_WITH_DES_CBC_40_MD5, TLS_DH_anon_EXPORT_WITH_RC4_40_MD5, TLS_KRB5_EXPORT_WITH_RC4_40_SHA, TLS_KRB5_EXPORT_WITH_RC4_40_MD5, Should these ciphers be included in this proposal? -- Jan Kuřík ___ devel-announce mailing list devel-annou...@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel-announce -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

I can confirm this myself, I have UEFI with Fedora 21 and Win7 at home, and I noticed that there seems to be a fsck running on every Fedora boot. I haven't had time to debug it properly yet, but it doesn't seem to work properly out of the box. Moreover, if I look into `journalctl -b`, I see time shifted during the boot process (which kind of messes up the history whenever I search in it). I haven't reported any bug yet, but there's certainly something not working out of the box there. Re: [Bug 1201978] dracut assumes BIOS time is UTC closed without fixing again
On Tue, 28.04.15 14:50, Michael Schwendt (mschwe...@gmail.com) wrote: On Fri, 24 Apr 2015 05:14:27 -0400, Felix Miata wrote: Why does this bug exist only in Fedora, not in openSUSE or Mageia or *buntu? All my systems are multiboot, so only a select very few are on UTC. None that are on UTC have Fedora installed. This means every Fedora boot takes about twice as long or longer than anything else takes, waiting on all the unnecessary FS checks. Me too. It's on my growing list of breakage to observe. Haven't spent any time on it yet. Logical volumes getting checked nearly at every reboot. journalctl shows entries which are two hours in the future at boot time, then it returns to the correct time afterwards. I remember there have been issues like that years ago - I don't think I've had to do anything special to work around it, but perhaps I'm wrong and need to search in my notes. Currently, it's broken again. Fedora doesn't use time-based fsck for a reason, the concept is simply broken. UEFI doesn't solve anything with the rtc-in-local stuff windows is doing there. rtc-in-local is really broken but that's hardly Linux' fault, that's windows' fault. it is inherently incompatible with multi-boot setups, since the algorithm to adjust for DST requires knowing whether the RTC was already set to DST or not, and that is saved by windows on the windows partition, and linux does not have generic access to that. also, if you'd do multiboot with multiple windows versions this breaks even on windows, since each windows version stores that flag on their own partition. It's a simple fact that rtc-in-local is broken, there is no way around that, and we cannot support this in linux in full since not even windows supports in in full... we do offer a minimal somehwat compatible mode for linux, in which case DST adjustments don#t work and early boot doesn't get the right time, but that's exactly how much you will get, and we are willing to support. And yes, I am sorry that MS-DOS and Windows cannot handle this, but that's something to fix in DOS and Windows, because we simply *cannot* fix this fully on Linux. And asking for rtc-in-local together with time-based fsck is something we simply cannot support at all. Either get your RTC set to UTC like everybody else, or disable time-based fsck like everybody else, but if you enable both then you are purely on your own. Essentially you are asking us to support multi-boot with windows, but you ignore that it's windows that doesn't support it in the first place... And no, this *never* worked fully on Linux, and it never will, sorry. Re: Removing packages that have broken dependencies in F22 tree
On Tue, Apr 28, 2015 at 1:09 PM, Robert Rati rr...@redhat.com wrote: oozie rrati, coolsvap, moceap This break occurred because of a very late change (April 22) to enable building/running the hadoop ecosystem on ARM. A dependency broke during that set of changes and will need to be looked at. I don't think this package should be retired if it is not able to be fixed by the requested date. It is only broken on ARM. If this isn't fixed soon then the packages should just revert to not building on ARM. Actually that change didn't break it, but it can't currently rebuilt because pig is FTBFS on all architectures, AFAICT it's due to a hbase rebase [1] [1] https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org//work/tasks/6065/9536065/build.log -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Re: build failure icu-54.1-2.fc23 armv7hl
icu-54.1-2.fc23 armv7hl had a build failure when executing test cases for number formatting, see http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=9469050 Same happened building icu-54.1-3.fc22, but the logs are gone. However, I tried to reproduce building armv7hl f22, but encountered no error whatsoever. How did you try and reproduce it? Another build in koji, used mock or some other means? I used a Red Hat internal machine, building the f22 src on f21. So maybe the difference is that one has to build on f22 or rawhide to reproduce the error. Quite a bit changed like gcc5 just to start between F-21 and F22. The builders themselves run F-21 but all packages are built within a mock chroot with F-22. I suggest trying to build it in mock. You can get details of how to do that here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Using_Mock_to_test_package_builds koji doesn't have outbound network connectivity so if a test relies on being able to connect to an outside resource or similar it might fail, but I can't interpret the output of the failure above to work out what it was trying to do. There should be no network connectivity involved. The failure was in scientific number formatting such that a number is formatted with one order of magnitude off, though the actual number is correct, for example: ERROR: Expected -10.000E-01 Got: -1.E00 ERROR: Expected 12.346E07 Got: 1.2346E08 The tests are in icu/source/test/intltest/numfmtst.cpp NumberFormatTest::TestExponential() and NumberFormatTest::TestScientific() Only some of the tests fail though.. F23 System Wide Change: Disable SSL3 and RC4 by default
= Proposed System Wide Change: Disable SSL3 and RC4 by default = https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/RemoveSSL3andRc4 Change owner(s): Nikos Mavrogiannopoulos n...@redhat.com This change will disable by default the SSL 3.0 protocol and the RC4 cipher in components which use the system wide crypto policy. -- Jan Kuřík ___ devel-announce mailing list devel-annou...@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel-announce -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

We have another Test Day coming up on Thursday, part of the effort to test package management around the DNF migration. We'll be testing the GNOME Software Center and Apper (KDE's graphical package management tool). It should be a fairly light effort - we just need to test basic functionality in both tools to make sure things work. The Test Day page is here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2015-04-30_SoftwareCenter_Apper It's mostly just the template at present, though - I'll clean the page up and add some test cases tomorrow. Zbigniew, do you have any idea why this wouldn't work well with UEFI firmware? Re: Removing packages that have broken dependencies in F22 tree
oozie rrati, coolsvap, moceap This break occurred because of a very late change (April 22) to enable building/running the hadoop ecosystem on ARM. A dependency broke during that set of changes and will need to be looked at. I don't think this package should be retired if it is not able to be fixed by the requested date. It is only broken on ARM. If this isn't fixed soon then the packages should just revert to not building on ARM. Re: [Bug 1201978] dracut assumes BIOS time is UTC closed without fixing again

If you (say) dual-boot Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 (I've done this in a work environment), and boot back and forth between them on a DST change flag day, then both OSes expect to change the RTC to reflect current local time. You then have to pull the RTC time back to reality manually, as it's now out by one hour. The point is that systemd gets fussy when RTC is in local time even if it's a single boot system. I don't know what the full consequence of its complaint is, but it complains nevertheless (via timedatectl) basically saying it's unsupported. Windows 95 and NT are completely different lineages and never supported dual-boot. Maybe Windows 95 followed by 98, or Windows NT 3.5 followed by 4.0 would have; just as it's possible to dual boot Windows 7 followed by 8. IOW, Windows works with RTC in local time if (and only if) it's the one and only OS on the system that writes to the RTC. Fedora also writes to the RTC, and thus we have to somehow co-ordinate changes with Windows in such a way that DST adjustments only get applied once If there's evidence of another system present, maybe don't change the RTC? Just use it as a guide absent an Internet connect, and with one chrony can set system time without changing the RTC which only causes problems. Why doesn't Windows follow this strategy then (not changing RTC)? Why change RTC for daylight savings? Actually, Fedora (most OSes) update the RTC to deal with drift compared to the more accurate time available from NTP, not to twiddle daylight savings. Updating the BIOS time is not primarily for DST Apple's boot camp package patches Windows to deal with this problem, FWIW. Which sounds like Apple got fed up with it too. ; I've not looked at UEFI to find out whether UEFI solves this. It's solved there, I have no idea if this is honored by the kernel or systemd though. http://wiki.phoenix.com/wiki/index.php/EFI_TIME Worth noting the bug being discussed and reasons for closing https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1201978 refer to /BIOS/ time and the fact it does not have time zones. snip We could try to build an infrastructure to store tz information, and rebuild initramfses, etc, or we can just rip of the bandaid. This is a game of whack-a-mole which accelerates are systems get more dynamic and mobile that we cannot really hope to win. Hindsight being 20/20, obviously around 13 years ago Linux (and friends) should have agreed to not fight the RTC being in local time on multiboot systems, in particular dual boot ones with Windows. Windows figures out what timezone the RTC is in by reading the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation which a Linux OS service could also defer to by default rather than the adversarial relationship that's been chosen. Which registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation? The one in my Windows 95 install, or the one in my Windows NT 4.0 install? Seeing as Microsoft doesn't support either one of those for something like 20 years now, I'd say neither but still possible to infer another OS is already present and to leave the RTC alone and just adapt to a local setting and time service rather than insisting on changing the clock. Basically the Windows approach (keep shuffling the BIOS clock and use flags to remember whether you've done it or not) is broken, or at least inherently fragile. Multi-boot shows this up. Come to that, how is Linux supposed to find and read the registry, given that it may not be allowed by administrator policy to mount the filesystem that contains the registry? In the worst case, you dual boot the way I did at work, where the machine's disk is in a cold swap caddy, and you cannot physically get at the disk. If it seems like a mono OS installation, then its reasonable for the OS to assume it can assume complete ownership of the RTC. But just like a VM doesn't assert control over the real hardware RTC, a guest OS in a dual boot situation shouldn't either. If that guest is intending to be friendly, it ought to adapt rather than enforce a whole new policy the primary OS can't deal with. No OS in a dual boot situation is a 'guest'. Unlike a VM guest the OS running on hardware is expected to be responsible for that hardware. I use Fedora daily and Windows less than once a week. Which is the 'primary' OS? Apparently Windows, since it wants to mess with the RTC. -- imalone http://ibmalone.blogspot.co.uk -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
