This may cause unexpected results or subtle differences between local builds on packager machines and builds on Koji, so keep that in mind. Such differences happen but that is a bug in .spec files which should be filed and fixed for those packages. It would be good to do some mass rebuild with minimal vs. full OS installation and verify all the binary packages both build and they are the same. That looks like a relic of the past, we still drag. IPv6 support should be transparent in programs (fortunately we don't have ssh6). Any objection to fill bugs to merge the following tools with their ipv4 equivalent? ping6, geoiplookup6, tracepath6, traceroute6 While I agree with your assessment of the separate tools, I think you're better off filing bugs with the upstream projects. I'm interested in what fedora ships rather than the upstream project per se. Fedora ships whatever upstream ships. Big changes like integrating separate programs together should be made upstream. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Staying_close_to_upstream_projects The fedora maintainer may chose to switch to another upstream project if that is required. Are there other such projects that have all the features of current ping/traceroute/etc but integrate the tools together? Rich. Probably worth it to add fping/fping6 to the list as well: https://github.com/schweikert/fping As Fedora fping maintainer, I can't do anything with this. It needs to be filed upstream. I see a few reasons why network testing tools like ping, traceroute, fping, etc. may still be using separate binaries for IPv6. One is that when you are testing network functionality, you often want to test IPv4 or IPv6 specifically. These tools aren't really end-user applications like ssh, where you don't care what protocol it uses to connect because the protocol is just a means to an end. With the network testing tools, you often DO care. Two is that the network testing tools often need to do protocol-specific low-level things, like open raw sockets or build packets manually rather than relying on the OS TCP/IP stack to do it. Three is that these tools were often ported from IPv4 and don't support integrated functionality (due to #2). They can be compiled for either IPv4 or IPv6, but not both at the same time. For example, the fping RPM used to build the software twice--once for IPv4 and once for IPv6--and then package up the results together. This changed with newer fping versions, however. I don't think pushing Fedora maintainers on this by filing bugs downstream is going to change things. It is the upstream software that needs enhancement, so the bugs should be filed upstream. Also, suggesting alternate upstream projects that have the integrated IPv4/IPv6 functionality is fine, but they may not be drop-in replacements for the existing tools. In that case the existing tools should stay and the new ones can be added to the distro separately if desired. You can't exactly stop shipping a ping command and replace it with gnip just because the latter supports IPv4+IPv6 with a single command. Add it sure, but not replace. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

I have been searching for over an hour and cannot for the life of me find Fedora for Android. Just to keep it simple... Can someone please point me in a good direction to start. Fedora on Android is not really a thing, because Android is an OS and Fedora is an OS. Unless you write a VM for Android and run Fedora as a guest in it ;) I did something like that a very long time ago to get a form of lisp running on a Z80 one board computer. I suspect it is a lot harder today and for the tablet would probably mean hacking the drivers in some way. Maybe I'll take a look at this idea... Regards, Les H Thanks. I'll check that out. Ok, Jon, Checked that out. It appears to be going the wrong way, from android on the pad to the desktop. Looks like it is back to the ADS solution. RFE: Stackable namespaced repositories
I've been working on trying to package python virtual environments with rpm (outline here: http://orionlibre.blogspot.com/2015/05/deploying-scientific-python-environment.html). While this particular project is python based, the same basic concept can be applied to anything else that allows manipulating the load path - which is pretty much everything (PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PERLINC, etc). I'm most familiar with the HPC world which does this a lot - providing different versions of various packages in a hierarchy and using environment modules to allow users to load the desired stack at runtime. This is also essentially the same thing that SCLs do, though SCLs are more isolated from the base system. The big problem that this exposes in rpm packaging is namespacing the rpms: rpms in the stacked repo can depend on packages in the system repos, but not vice-versa. So we need to put them into a different namespace manually (I'm using a %{?pyvenv_name_prefix} macro, SCLs use %{scl_prefix}). Complicating this is that one needs to add the prefix to the names of other packages in the repository when specifying requirements - which may not be known ahead of time. It would be very nice if this could be handled automatically. What I think would work is if a repository could be marked as a stacked repository and given a namespace - essentially a prefix to the names in the repository. For example, my pyvenv-nwra repo could be given that prefix - and marked as such - say with pyvenv-nwra:. Then when depsolving dnf would allow dependencies in the pyvenv-nwra repo to be satisfied by packages in base repositories but not allow the reverse. Installed packages/depnames would be given the pyvenv-nwra: prefix to keep them separate from the system resources. This strikes me as a complicated technical challenge, so I really would like to hear back from the packaging ecosystem folks their thoughts about it. But I really think this could move us into the model of providing software stacks targeting different applications with different package/version requirements that build upon a stable OS core while still allowing for the tracking and deployment benefits of using rpm packages. And by having pre-populated buildroots that make any needed macro changes (say %_prefix), many packages could be built unmodified from the Fedora git repos as opposed to having to hack in the namespace prefixes into the spec files. - Orion -- Orion Poplawski Technical Manager 303-415-9701 x222 NWRA/CoRA DivisionFAX: 303-415-9702 3380 Mitchell Lane or...@cora.nwra.com Boulder, CO 80301 http://www.cora.nwra.com -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
New qadevel staging machine to poke at
I ended up spending some time on the qadevel-stg system yesterday and I think that I have the phabricator bits to the point where they're ready to be tested (self-signed cert used, usual warnings will pop up). https://phab.qadevel.stg.fedoraproject.org/ I've built new phabricator packages, loaded a snapshot of our production phabricator and this machine is capable of hosting git repositories (once you add your ssh key, write access is ssh-only), so I made snapshots of all the repos and they're currently available on qadevel.stg: https://phab.qadevel.stg.fedoraproject.org/diffusion/ I still need to get buildbot and a few other bits working before it's truely done but I do think it's almost to the point where we could migrate off our current cloud instance once final freeze is over. If you have some time, please poke at it and let me know what you think. Self Introduction - Pranav Kant
Hello all, As of this writing, I am final year undergraduate Computer Science student going to graduate later this month (May 2015). I have been doing package reviews for last few months, and now I have just been sponsored into the packager group by Mamoru Tasaka. In other FOSS communities, I am an active GNOME developer, and a GNOME Foundation member. I started my GNOME contributions with GSoC 2014 being my first. I contributed to gnome-photos, gnome-online-accounts, gnome-online-miners during the summer. After that, I kept contributing to other GNOME modules regularly, mainly gnome-photos and gnome -documents; consequently, the GNOME Foundation member. I have also contributed to Mozilla in the past to necko group, and am also a Firefox Student Ambassador and Firefox club lead for my college. I am doing GSoC (2015) again this summer for libreoffice, and would be mainly working on improving tiled rendering and integrating it into gnome-documents via libreofficekit, and other potential consumers (maybe evince). Michael Meeks and Miklos Vajna would be mentoring me for this. During the summer, I also have plans to join FUDCON Pune and explore more ways of contributions to fedora. I am really excited about my first step of contributions, being a packager, into fedora and hope to be contributing to it in all possible ways that interests me in the near future. After the summers, I would be looking for a matching job, if possible, but continue to contribute to FOSS communities including fedora. Being a part of this wonderful community feels awesome, and I hope to learn a lot from all of you in near future. In the end, I would like to thank Mamoru Tasaka for sponsoring me into packager group, and Debarshi Ray for his guidance which has immensely helped me exploring new FOSS communities. -- Regards, Pranav Kant, Department of Computer Science Engineering, National Institute of Technology Hamirpur, India http://pranavk.me signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Testing request: gdm-on-Wayland on hybrid graphics laptops (esp. Macbooks)
Hi folks! We have a somewhat-worrying proposed blocker for F22: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1218787 it appears that after a successful installation of Workstation on the affected system, GDM-on-Wayland fails to start correctly but also does not fall through (as it should) to GDM-on-X, leaving the user with a black screen and no obvious way to proceed. This is obviously a bad bug, but so far it has only been observed on one test system (a Macbook Pro 8,2) by one tester. A few other testers have tried to reproduce on other hybrid graphics systems, but have not been able to. It would be very helpful to get some more data here. If anyone has a hybrid graphics laptop and can spare some space (or perhaps attach an external drive) for a test F22 install, can you please try installing F22 Workstation TC3 and creating a user: https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/22_TC3/Workstation/x86_64/iso/Fedora- Live-Workstation-x86_64-22-TC3.iso then boot the installed system, and see if GDM appears correctly? Thanks. Note there is a different bug which causes GDM-on-Wayland to flicker on some hardware: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1218688 that's something different, and is a bit further along in the diagnosis/fix process, so we probably don't need further reports of that one (though once a fix arrives, it'd be good to have folks test it). If you find you seem to be affected by the bug, please add your details to the report. If you test and find you're *not* affected by the bug - you see GDM properly - please reply to one of the mailing lists, so we can get some idea of the proportions of affected vs. non-affected testers. watching projects in Phabricator, Herald rules simplified
Hello everyone, in the last week I've spent a bit of time investigating the possibilities of how to watch for ticket/revision updates in Phabricator, and found out that some new features in Phab greatly simplify this. I have updated our Phab wiki page and included most common use cases: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Phabricator In a nutshell: * you can now start watching projects which automatically sends you all tasks (tickets) updates. No more Herald rules needed. Unfortunately, this does not apply for revisions (patches). * you can now easily subscribe to tickets without a project defined (usually bug reports). This way you can help us classify and triage them and make sure they go unnoticed (that unfortunately happened in the past). * Taskotron lovers can now easily watch for all Taskotron-related new revisions (patches) by using the repos-taskotron meta-project [1]. We will make sure that this meta-project is always linked with all taskotron-related repositories, and you don't need to update your Herald rules for every new Taskotron sub-project. * You can now easily decide between a permanent item subscription or just one-time notification by choosing either Add emails to CC name or Send an email to name. I have tested it for the last week and everything seems to work properly for me. If you have some troubles, ask. Differences between Koji and mock buildroots
For your information: Yesterday gdb package introduced Remommends: dnf-plugins-core in rawhide [1]. gdb is required by rpm-build, which is a default package in Koji f23 build group. As a consequence minimal f23-build buildroot installed with DNF (default mock config for rawhide) contains 22 additional packages compared to buildroot installed with YUM (mock config used by Fedora Koji). The list of extra packages is included below. This may cause unexpected results or subtle differences between local builds on packager machines and builds on Koji, so keep that in mind.
