mate-dialogs obsolete in F22
Hi, I just upgraded to F22 and noticed, that mate-dialogs was uninstalled and cannot be reinstalled due to mate-desktop having an Obsoletes entry for it. The corresponding changelog entry is quite short: * Sat Jul 12 2014 Wolfgang Ulbrich chat-to...@raveit.de - 1.9.1.1 ... - obsolete mate-dialogs for f22 What was the reason for this? matedialog works quite well on F22 ( installed the rpm with --nodeps) and I could not find a replacement for this tool, so I'm left a little puzzled... Pkgdb does not reflect the obsolete state of that package: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/package/mate-dialogs/ It is not retired in dist git either: http://bugz.fedoraproject.org/mate-dialogs - http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/mate-dialogs.git - http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/mate-dialogs.git/tree/ Plenty of Obsoletes tags that are non-versioned, which is a packaging mistake, because non-versioned Obsoletes names cannot be reintroduced: http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/mate-desktop.git/plain/mate-desktop.spec https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Renaming.2FReplacing_Existing_Packages -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Hi everyone! Fedora 23 and especially Changes submission deadline [1] is coming pretty soon - in two weeks on June 23rd. With Alpha release in August. Please, submit your System Wide Changes by this deadline, earlier better. As the deadline mainly applies for System Wide changes it is always good to have most of Self Contained Changes proposed as well. In case you'll need any help with your Change proposals, feel free to contact me. I have two other bugs where I solve similar troubles. Separate whole git-add doesn't make sense. So if this is good trade off approved by others, OK, we can do that, with notice that some error messages can appear. Right, I think were this package to exist, users would understand that it doesn't have all of the git functionality. Unfortunately, this is wrong assumption. It comes quite natural that if I want to use git command, I can do dnf install /usr/bin/git and I don't care which package ships this command. And this scenario is broken now, since this will not install full git I expect. And as it turns out, it breaks also Ruby build [1], since it uses BuildRequires: %{_bindir}/git, but the test suite later call git submodule command, which is not available anymore due to this split. I am wondering if there is some way out, for example git packages could have virtual provides such as git(add), git(submodule), git(rm), git(commit) and my package could then depend on the specific virtual provides, but I am not sure it is worth of the effort. Re: F23 System Wide Change: Default Local DNS Resolver
On Tue, 9 Jun 2015, Matthew Miller wrote: One (new!) thing I'm concerned with, now that I've enabled it on my system, is the persistant tray notification. This is... confusing and ugly. Can we (for F23 if possible, and F24 if not) get better GNOME Shell integration here? That's been on the TODO list for years, but it seems the hotspot detection mechanisms are not converging. The DNS interception and the HTTP interception really have to be handled together and an informed decision needs to then be made by the system. I believe that's been mostly due to lack of time for the various parties to sit down and plan and then program this further. Ideally, the dnssec-trigger DNS checks would be merged into the native hotspot testing. I see that there's a hotspot sign on option if you right click on the icon. How does this work with Network Manager and GNOME's captive portal detection? I have never seen those work except for when the backend was down and I got a stream of false positives. But possibly that is because I've used dnssec-trigger for years now and it might win the captive portal detection race. There are some bugs once in a while but overal it works pretty reliably. Re: git perl-less build?
On 2015-06-09, Vít Ondruch vondr...@redhat.com wrote: Unfortunately, this is wrong assumption. It comes quite natural that if I want to use git command, I can do dnf install /usr/bin/git and I don't care which package ships this command. And this scenario is broken now, since this will not install full git I expect. You cannot have both of them. Either the subcommand is optional and then installing /usr/bin/git cannot do the magic for you, or the subcommand is not optional and then you will always get the subcommand including all its dependencies. And as it turns out, it breaks also Ruby build [1], since it uses BuildRequires: %{_bindir}/git, but the test suite later call git submodule command, which is not available anymore due to this split. It breaks anything what expects that the subcommand works if git package was installed. This is the omnipresent doom of expressing an API by a package name. Once an API moves, reverese dependcies will break. IMHO there is no way how to ensure this will not happen. Only rebuilding everything and comparing before and after results. That's the reason why these changes happen only in unreleased Fedora. I am wondering if there is some way out, for example git packages could have virtual provides such as git(add), git(submodule), git(rm), git(commit) and my package could then depend on the specific virtual provides, but I am not sure it is worth of the effort. This is a solution. For example recent dnf does similar thing for DNF plug-ins. However just introducing this schema doesn't fix anything. One has to edit all other packages to use this new syntax. Otherwise it just provides accaptable excuse for git maintaners about a new packaging guideline that others do not conform to. -- Petr -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

DKMS is not installing the right kernel-devel package
Hey all, I've noticed that when dkms is installed, it's not grabbing the right kernel-devel package as a dependency. Instead, it grabs kernel-debug-devel. This occurs on Fedora 21 and 22, and I'm not sure why. If I install kernel-devel first, everything is fine. Otherwise, it grabs the wrong kernel-devel and DKMS modules don't build. I filed a bug for it on RHBZ too: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1228897 Anyone have any idea why this is happening and a way to work around it? -- 真実はいつも一つ!/ Always, there's only one truth! -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Self Introduction: Noa Resare
Greetings. It seems I'm back in the fold once more, having done some tiny contributions to Fedora way back in the early days. I work as an engineer at Spotify in Stockholm, and for the last two years or so I have been involved in an effort to support the Free Software work going in our company. What brought me back was an interest in java packaging, and I'm very impressed by the effort of the Fedora project to get around the problem of most java development being done on top of hundreds of binary mystery jars of unclear origin. So I have decided to contribute a bit to that effort. Other interests include automated scalable build and test infrastructure, DNS, Cassandra, puppet. Some of you might have seen me or even had beer with me at conferences such as FOSDEM or LinuxCon. I typically wear red shoes. n -- Spotify Free Software ombudsman. Re: DKMS is not installing the right kernel-devel package
This has also been a problem for several releases with the akmods from rpmfusion. I think the more correct solution (read to the end) would be to somehow prioritize the kernel-devel package (possibly multiple) that matches the installed kernel(s). kernel-debug-devel is never the correct choice when only standard kernels are installed, but it gets installed because of alphabetical order; this ordering is one way to get something useful installed instead. This of course is pie-in-the-sky and doesn't match with how dependencies can currently be declared and resolved, AFAIK. -Dan On Tue, Jun 9, 2015 at 3:41 PM, Thorsten Leemhuis fed...@leemhuis.info wrote: On 09.06.2015 21:04, Neal Gompa wrote: I've noticed that when dkms is installed, it's not grabbing the right kernel-devel package as a dependency. That's messy and creates overhead for users, but that's afaics the only way it will work for everyone; otherwise you'll always run into situations where a kernel-devel package for one kernel variant gets installed while you are running different variant. Example: You get kernel-devel via some dependency in akmods or dkms; but you are running kernel-PAE on your i686 machine, so building modules with akmods or dkms will fail, as that's requires kernel-PAE-devel. cloud-init / dnf selinux denials
Hey all, We have a bug that affects booting cloud images (see [1]). There are denials that don't allow cloud-init to install packages. I'm not exactly where a fix needs to be applied but I have copied both the owners of dnf and the owner of selinux-policy on this email. What can we do to get this looked at and fixed? I work as an engineer at Spotify in Stockholm, and for the last two years or so I have been involved in an effort to support the Free Software work going in our company. What brought me back was an interest in java packaging, and I'm very impressed by the effort of the Fedora project to get around the problem of most java development being done on top of hundreds of binary mystery jars of unclear origin. So I have decided to contribute a bit to that effort. Other interests include automated scalable build and test infrastructure, DNS, Cassandra, puppet. fedora wikipage Packaging:Python
Dear python-devel list, I have few questions about the Packaging:Python wikipage[1], with hope that this list is the right one for me to do so. The page doesn't discuss much any differences in guidelines for packages of python modules, python applications and when python project provides both. For example both ruby and haskell packaging guidelines covers this topic. Would you consider this to be important/useful enough for new packager to provide better guidance? There is no mention of any semi automatic tools which would try to create initial spec file based on metadata provided in PyPI. Like bdist_rpm of distutils or py2pack. Do you use them to create initial spec file? Is there any official policy on this? Is there any reason not to use such tools? Moreover would you think that listing few nicely packaged python projects on the wikipage would make sense? Besides that I puzzled about few other details which involves python 3 as default requirements, but this I leave out for now. [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Python Thank you for your answer Martin Bukatovic ___ python-devel mailing list python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/python-devel

It shouldn't really need to; the question isn't specific to python at all. MB Would you consider this to be important/useful enough for new MB packager to provide better guidance? Perhaps a section in the main guidelines would be warranted. For some reason I already thought it was there, but I don't see it while searching. I'll see if I can draft something. MB Moreover would you think that listing few nicely packaged python MB projects on the wikipage would make sense? That definitely doesn't belong in a packaging guideline. - J ___ python-devel mailing list python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/python-devel
