There's "dnf mark install bar" for that.

And I **think** that it's automatically done when you installed bar in
your second command above. (if it isn't it probably should be)

Could we switch for grub2 architectures and keep using grubby for other
architectures?

This brings me to interesting question, how to actually know that one
should be looking for some bundled library? I don't think this was ever
addressed,

c.f. the section
"Bundling and Duplication of system libraries"

but I believe it'd be useful to have some page where we can
see what is bundled and where is it bundled. I don't think that
"repoquery" is the answer, since this does not give good enough overview
nor statistics, etc.

repoquery has been rendered widely unusable by dnf.

Because 1. this behavior has never been default before, and 2. it is just
as logical for "remove" to be the opposite of "install" like so: Install
installs foo and its dependencies, remove removes foo and any packages
depending on it. And this is exactly how it has to work, so it is expected.

Anyway the proposal in another thread, to specify in the list that the
extra removals are because they are unneeded dependencies, and not just
more removals, would solve a lot of the confusion.

Correct, I also believe there's plans to move the cloud images back to
syslinux. Both ARMv7 and at least some of the cloud images use
exlinux.conf. I believe pjones was developing a new version of grubby
or a replacement to it.

It's not that scary. In Oct 2011, there were a number of applications
that Fedora developed that were being relicensed to GPLv2+. They
needed to collect acks from the people that had contributed code and I
believe this list was setup to document those.

No.

None, other than archiving the acks/discussions.

Could we switch for grub2 architectures and keep using grubby for other
architectures?

no - there is a world without grub2

Thanks, I need to update that. It was expected when I wrote it, but
that has changed. One advantage here is that Fedora can opt to carry
whatever version of v8 makes sense for other consumers.

It's not my preference, certainly. But I spoke with some of the
upstream developers and the simple truth is that they have been broken
consistently by upstream v8 breaking ABI and even API in point
releases. Until and unless Google decides to treat v8 like a shared
lib instead of the copylib that it really is, the only sensible
approach here is to bundle it.

In accordance with the bundling policy, it *is* carrying a virtual
Provides to allow us to identify whether it is affected by discovered
CVEs.

Can you tell who added it? Perhaps look in the history, see who added
it and mail them directly?

(I cannot see the bug either)

Maybe it is not so simple.
There are dependencies with no use apart the main tool (tool requires
tool-libs),
but in some cases the dependency is useful on its own (e.g. fonts).

So, I counter your reasoning with this:

- dnf install foo (also installs bar)
- dnf install bar (oops, already installed, good)
- dnf remove foo (wow, why did it remove bar, I explicitly "installed" it
yesterday!)

Is dnf able to recognize that bar was "wanted" and not "accidental"?

Regards.

This is needed only if you intentionally started dnsmasq. You don't need to kill
all dnsamsq instances in the system (e.g. the ones started by libvirt). I'll
review
the change wiki in this regard.

As discussed in the Bug, this is not going to work and it is expected not to.
Setting search domains from DHCP is a security issue.

This brings me to interesting question, how to actually know that one
should be looking for some bundled library? I don't think this was ever
addressed, but I believe it'd be useful to have some page where we can
see what is bundled and where is it bundled. I don't think that
"repoquery" is the answer, since this does not give good enough overview
nor statistics, etc.

I don't think so. Despite the similarity in name, grubby does more
than just deal with grub stuff. Namely, it handles bootloaders that
aren't grub. We're close to having all arches on grub2, but I believe
armv7hl won't ever get there and it's a primary arch.

I've set the list to reject all posts.

Will check with the owner if it's still needed or if we can just remove

FYI, an infrastructure ticket might well be a better place to bring

Why? Remove is the opposite of install. "dnf install foo" will install
package foo _and_ all its dependencies. So it is only logical that
"dnf remove foo" should remove package foo _and_ all its (unneeded)
dependencies.

Per request of the point of contact, I have orphaned the 'yarock'

Note that the latest upstream may require some additional new packages
be submitted.

[Test-Announce]Fedora 21 End Of Life

2015-12-02 Thread Dennis Gilmore
As of the 1st of December 2015, Fedora 21 has reached its end of life for
updates and support. No further updates, including security updates,
will be available for Fedora 21. A previous reminder was sent on
27th of May [0].

Fedora 22 will continue to receive updates until approximately one
month after the release of Fedora 24. The maintenance schedule of
Fedora releases is documented on the Fedora Project wiki [1]. The
Fedora Project wiki also contains instructions [2] on how to upgrade
from a previous release of Fedora to a version receiving updates.

Then let's make the same change across all bootloaders. For grub2, use
grub2-mkconfig. For syslinux, use whatever Anaconda uses to generate the
config in the first place.

Frankly, I'd like to see Fedora move away from grub2 even on x86. But I'd
also like to see grubby go away.

Why? Remove is the opposite of install. "dnf install foo" will install
package foo _and_ all its dependencies. So it is only logical that
"dnf remove foo" should remove package foo _and_ all its (unneeded)
dependencies.

Maybe it is not so simple.
There are dependencies with no use apart the main tool (tool requires
tool-libs),
but in some cases the dependency is useful on its own (e.g. fonts).

So, I counter your reasoning with this:

- dnf install foo (also installs bar)
- dnf install bar (oops, already installed, good)
- dnf remove foo (wow, why did it remove bar, I explicitly "installed"
it yesterday!)

Is dnf able to recognize that bar was "wanted" and not "accidental"?

So the answer is no, dnf does not consider "install" of an already

- user asking for a package to be installed does not get any more

And you would do that via a single command how? By wrapping it in an
architecture/bootloader agnostic wrapper. Which is what grubby is.

Maybe you could start by listing the problems you have with grubby
(and apparently grub2) instead of just saying get rid of it?

My big pain point right now is that we can't have /boot be a subvolume on
btrfs and boot properly.

GRUB2 and ExtLinux both support booting from btrfs just fine, but we don't
seem to support it for some reason?

I can't recall the issue off the top of my head, but I *think* the issue
was related to grubby. Perhaps using grub2-mkconfig would fix this?

Well, it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I'm now baffled. I had the %%doc version above in a spec file, and
fedora-review complained about doc v. license. I checked with rpmbuild,
as below, found that _licensedir wasn't defined, only
_defaultlicensedir; so I changed to using that and the review complaint
went away.

However, a test with a trivial spec file shows that licensedir actually
is defined. Where does it come from, and why isn't it shown by
--showrc? Now I can't reproduce the issue with what I was packaging,
consistent with the test. Also I checked the dssp packages I did
recently using the %%doc form, and they show the right difference
between el5/6 and the rest.

Gradle Packaging

2015-12-02 Thread Dennis Chen
There are a couple of Java libraries that are built using the Gradle
system, which should have been incorporated in the F22 release. What is
the status of the use of Gradle in building packages for Fedora? It
seems that there are no macros specific to Gradle, and the Java
distribution guidelines rather outdated.

Sincerely,
Dennis Chen

Hm. Wait. I think there might be a terminology conflict here. Are
you specifically referring to grubby the binary, or do you mean grubby
the package? Because I was talking about the latter, as it contains
new-kernel-pkg, etc.

That's a matter of preference. If I have a newer kernel version
installed that doesn't actually work, I want the older kernel I _just_
installed to be the default and top entry so my machine boots to
something I can use. This happens often when people try rawhide -rcX

Fixing this might be better served by filing an RFE for grubby to

TBH, I just edit /boot/EFI/efi/grub.cfg directly. It works fine.

How often are you editing the boot options for _all_ installed
kernels? I'm not questioning what you're saying, but my experience
tends show people edit boot options for a single stanza which isn't
all that arduous.

Also, once edited, any newly installed kernel after that picks up the
added options auto-magically.

This sounds like a documentation issue? You're looking at the files
grub2 installs and trying to follow their advice, but the distro
doesn't actually

But it's not. grubby does things like adding kernels and removing
kernels. grub2-mkconfig enumerates kernels and generates a config.

and if it has a bug you are lot with *all* entries borked

#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by grub2-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

That's grossly misleading. It *was* automatically generated, but it
is certainly not automatically generated on an ongoing basis. If I
change settings in /etc/default/grub, nothing happens. If I actually
want to change boot options, I have to either manually edit every
instance (or somehow, magically, the correct subset of copies) in
/etc/grub2-efi.cfg, which is a real pain and easy to screw up

no - if you want them all identically just run grub2-mkconfig manually
but don't expect that i am happy when something put's the same error
into every entry

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=840204 is probably the best
example - with grubby you where able to add the needed option to the
most recent entry and survived kernel updates

with grub2-mkconfig *every* single kernel update without edit the config
before reboot meant go to your car and drive 300 miles to the remote
machine or explain somebody how to get screen and keyboard on the
headless machine and hand out the password

Can you please try to reduce your level of sarcasm on the list?

It's especially irritating when you're simultaneously sarcastic and
factually incorrect:

$ stat /boot/vmlinuz-4.2.6-301.fc23.x86_64

^^
Note the ctime

 Birth: -

For something more reliable, grub2-mkconfig for similar could do something like:

$ rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz-4.2.6-301.fc2-queryformat '%{installtime}\n'

with some appropriate provision for packages that don't come from RPM
in the first place.

For human readability:

$ rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz-4.2.6-301.fc23.x86_64 --queryformat
'%{installtime:date}\n'
Sun 29 Nov 2015 01:01:52 PM PST

Note that this is suspiciously similar to ctime above.

You're not 100% correct. Try ls -lhca. Note the 'c' in there. And
maybe try at least searching the manpage for the most obvious keywork
('ctime' in this case) before digging in your heels. (Or even try the
exact commands I put in my email, which would have lead to much the
same conclusion.)

The fact that you assert your absolute correctness on a frequent basis
even when you're not correct makes me, and probably other people,
likely to discount everything you say even in the cases when you are
correct. If you want your opinion to be helpful, please reconsider
how you write your emails.

Anyway, I filed an RFE: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1287854

Fair enough. Two major problems come to mind:

1. grubby puts the most recently-installed kernel on top.
grub2-mkconfig puts the highest version on top. In the cases where
they differ, I'd argue that the latter is better.

2 .If I want to edit boot options, grubby makes it unnecessarily
painful, and the directions are simply wrong. For example, my
/etc/grub2-efi.cfg says:

#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by grub2-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub
#

That's grossly misleading. It *was* automatically generated, but it
is certainly not automatically generated on an ongoing basis. If I
change settings in /etc/default/grub, nothing happens. If I actually
want to change boot options, I have to either manually edit every
instance (or somehow, magically, the correct subset of copies) in
/etc/grub2-efi.cfg, which is a real pain and easy to screw up. Or I
can cross my fingers any try to figure out the right invocation to
just regenerate the whole thing (grub2-mkconfig >/etc/grub2-efi.cfg,
presumably). Assuming that such an incantation exists (which it does
these days!), one wonders why it's not happening automatically on
kernel upgrades.

To the extent that I do it wrong and grub2-efi.cfg diverges from that
which is implied by /etc/default/grub, etc, we have a mess. This can
happen due to settings editing and presumably due to other things.

In fact, looking more closely, there's already a divergence.
grub2-mkconfig doesn't emit LANG=en_US.UTF-8. The grubby-generated
config has LANG=en_US.UTF-8 on all entries except vmlinuz-0-rescue. I
would argue that that's a bug. If grubby went away or started using
grub2-mkconfig internally, this bug and all bugs like it would become
impossible.

A more minor (from my POV) problem:

3. More critical-path code. grub2-mkconfig must work for Anaconda to
work. ostree requires it, too. But grubby is a separate and
presumably rather more complicated codebase, and it needs to be kept
in sync for kernel upgrades to work, and those are also critical path.

Minus the publicity. I first wanted to find out what the list owner(s)

list owners to check their ancient/unused lists, too.

the problem with that thread is that you discount anything because you
refuse trying to understand that it is a *very* bad idea to touch *all*
boot entries after a kernel install

Anyway, I filed an RFE: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1287854

and i answered why it is a bad idea there

"regenerating config instead of incrementally" leads in change
*intentional* differences of options when someone tries to debug kernel
problems and much more worse: a bug there would render *all* boot
options unbootable instead only the last installed one

frankly one can even raise "installonly_limit" by intention and have the
same kernel version with *multiple* options - that all would be erased
by try out if a newer build fixes the problem

now you can say: that's not a problem for the ordinary user
i say: the ordianry user don't touch kernel options at all

I'm talking about grubby the binary and grubby the approach of
incrementally editing the config rather than regenerating it each
time.

Or file an RFE for grub2 to have an option to use the file timestamps
instead of the version for the sort order.

In my case, I do a lot of kernel compiling, and I don't like the
RPM-provided 4.2-whatever kernels to end up above my 4.4+patches
kernel whenever dnf pulls in a new kernel.

I do that to. I find it to be extremely tedious and error prone. In
comparison, managing /etc/default/grub on the Ubuntu servers I
maintain is a piece of work, works every time, and requires no thought
about exactly how many copies of the same thing I have to change. And
that file exists on Fedora, with the same contents, but uselessly,
unlike Ubuntu. Debian/Ubuntu's update-grub tool is wonderful, and
it's really quite simple:

#!/bin/sh
set -e
exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@"

Of course, the paths would be a bit different for Fedora.

I generally update for all because I don't trust grubby to propagate
them if I don't or I edit for all because I'm sometimes fastidious.
If I only do one, it's because I'm lazy.

Re: F24 System Wide Change: Node.js 4.2

Is there some testing version of v8 somewhere? Will we have time to play
with rubygem-therubyracer, if we can convince it to run with recent v8
or what else have to be done? The same applies for MongoDB if I am not
mistaken.

Stephen Gallagher built nodejs 4.2.2 in the side tag last night, but using a
bundled v8 so it shouldn't affect other users of v8. The spec file now says:

# Node.js is closely tied to the version of v8 that is used with it. It makes
# sense to use the bundled version because upstream consistently breaks ABI
# even in point releases. Node.js upstream has now removed the ability to build
# against a shared system version entirely.
# See

The dependency is perl(Socket), not perl(IO::Socket), and that's part
of the EL-6 base distribution. You could file an RFE for an upgrade in
Bugzilla but even if it was accepted, it'd be quite a while before it
appeared.

You might also consider asking IO-Socket-IP upstream why that
particular version is needed; it's possible that it could be for
something platform-specific to (say) Windows, which wouldn't affect
Linux, and you might then get away with patching that version
requirement down to what works on Linux.

Paul.

I have no experience with other distros. That may be why I don't
understand the desire to rip everything up. However, even in thinking
about it some I can't see where I would personally care that much.

How funny! I only edit one because I'm lazy. Grubby propagates the
change to every kernel thereafter. Also, I'm not sure I'd blindly
want an option passed to all existing kernels. Quite often it is
something I'm trying that is new enough to only exist in certain
kernels, or a debug setting I only want on certain kernels. But your
point is certainly valid.
