It's worse when some monkeyboy has been using "useradd" casually,
without trying to prevent overlap of userid. Suddenly a *system*
account, such as a hand installed apache, named, tomcat, or mysql gets
a uid matching that of another system account.

Hilarity ensues.

I also just found: Project Tracer: what you should restart after "dnf
upgrade"
You can read about it here, if you're interested:
https://goo.gl/ZFS29E

Preview snippet:
...

Every time you update your system, your currently running applications
should be restarted otherwise you will be still running those old binaries
before the update.

You have 3 options how to resolve it:

   1. You ignore it completely and you patiently wait until your system
   crash.
   2. Do Offline Updates
   .
   3. After restart you carefully restart only those applications and
daemons, which needs to be restarted.

I really dislike Offline Updates as I see no reason for going offline for
dozens of minutes. And there is only few scripts which helps you when you
want to follow option 3. Most famous is needs-restarting
 from
yum-utils. But the output is very ... ehm ... unfriendly. And it is very
slow.

I think the accept-updates state is better managed in a separate
pre-operation plugin which is able to distinguish internal vs external
updates. I'm actually writing something like this at the moment in my
free time which could work here.

...

> >> nsslapd-replica-accept-updates-state: on/off

This configuration is really confusing. I can see how it's meant to
work, but I don't like it.

Again, I'm really against adding more configuration options. We should
do "the right thing by default, always". Admins are lazy and aren't
going to fine tune their replication for fun.

My vote is scrap these two configuration options, and just make it
"auto" behaviour.

Any idea if we can move back to building the dhcp package against the
latest version and retire bind99? I don't remember the exact bugs we
saw against 9.10 with dhcp (although I do vaguely remember some issue
that forced the change).

Except that grubby doesn't just configure grub, it's also used for
syslinux/extlinux boot options also in use in Fedora. Those use cases
would need to be accounted for as well.

You're right, this is actually a "cosmetic" issue, because the manually added
dependencies do end up in the final RPM but they're not printed in rpmbuild
output on the terminal. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks very much for taking the time to post... very simple and to the
point.

Another method I've found for those concerned about using a terminal under
a DE is to
check out dnf-automatic: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/AutoUpdates
There is currently an open bug regarding the use of email notifications
when using
dnf-automatic: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1279773
but other than that, it appears to work fine.

For those wanting to know which processes need to be restarted after
update,
there is the appropriately named dnf needs-restarting:
http://dnf-plugins-core.readthedocs.io/en/latest/needs_restarting.html

As the documentation mentions:

Note that in most cases a process should survive update of its binary and
libraries
it is using without requiring to be restarted for proper operation.
There are however specific cases when this does not apply.

That contradicts churchyard's claim in the FESCo tracker:
| These packages are not intended to be used as dependencies for other
| packages (such as we have some "compat" packages when another package
| needs an older version of a library), hence we want to stop people from
| requiring them, see https://fedorahosted.org/fpc/ticket/650 - as a result
| no software in Fedora will ever run on those.

I would also like to point out that if you have these suffixed Python
versions installed, some build scripts may be accidentally picking up those
instead of the recommended default versions of Python.

I must suggest that "nohup dnf whatever > logfile.out &" is your
friend for exactly this sort of thing. stdin/stdout/stderr are all
disconnected from the running session and a visible log is generated.
And this is *much, much* easier than trying to repair legacy
architectures of complexity to preserve the status of an associated
terminal wound through X windows and Gnome and "sophisticated feature
filled architecture of the week".

It doesn't fix the underlying mishandling of terminal session loss.
But it can get you and others trapped through the short term.

 fedfind-2.6.2-1.el7 (FEDORA-EPEL-2016-cf25788bac)
 Fedora Finder finds Fedora

Update Information:

The major change in this update is that fedfind now has the ability to
effectively override the productmd-formatted metadata provided by Pungi in
specific cases where it's problematic. There is a new helper function,
`helpers.correct_image`, which applies these 'corrections', and the image dicts
returned by the `Release.all_images` property - commonly used for getting a flat
list of image dicts from the compose metadata - now have these corrections
applied. This is intended to work around a [significant
issue](https://pagure.io/pungi/issue/417) that's appeared along with the
introduction of a Workstation ostree installer image for Fedora: pungi sets the
`type` for ostree installer images to `boot`, but that means there is no way to
distinguish a Workstation network install image from a Workstation ostree
install image using the metadata. This is a major problem for several things
which distinguish between images based on the metadata (openQA,
fedora_nightlies, and wikitcms are all affected by this). For now, fedfind will
'correct' the `type` for these images from `boot` to `dvd-ostree`. fedfind will
also use the `dvd-ostree` type for ostree installer images when synthesizing
metadata for Releases that do not have it. Note you can get un'corrected' image
dicts from the `Release.metadata` property, which always provides the original,
entirely unmodified metadata. There is also a new helper,
`fedfind.helpers.identify_image`, for constructing image identifiers from image
dicts; this is something various fedfind consumers do, and were duplicating the
code for, so let's let them share it. We also tweak and correct the
`expected_images` definitions somewhat (there were inconsistencies between what
fedfind was 'expecting' and what release engineering were actually intending to
provide). The relval update adjusts `relval size-check` for the `dvd-ostree`
change.

pghmcfc pushed to perl-JSON-MaybeXS (f23). "Update to 1.003007 (..more)"

2016-10-09 Thread notifications
From 6bb7746e92326abe6668d52b41f91776fbf2953b Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001
From: Paul Howarth
Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2016 17:25:54 +0100
Subject: Update to 1.003007

- New upstream release 1.003007
  - Bump prereq on JSON::PP, to ensure we get the fix for parsing utf8-encoded
values
  - We now always upgrade JSON::XS if it is installed and below version 3.0,
due to changes in handling booleans
  - Remove test dependency on Test::Without::Module (CPAN RT#115394)
- Simplify find command using -delete

[Bug 1382888] RFE: Upgrade to JSON-MaybeXS >= 1.003007

2016-10-09 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1382888

Paul Howarth changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 Status|NEW |ASSIGNED

It's only packaging/metadata changes, mainly to ensure sane back-end
dependencies (which we already have in all current Fedora releases). I guess
Plack upstream is wanting to make sure these dependencies are present and up to
date.

I'll push the updates this morning.
