Yeah, that's going to be a problem for am-utils.

It's been a while but IIRC there was a bug that I fixed in
the single-threaded concurrent mount handling that requires
UDP to work properly, not to mention the completely
unnecessary TCP overhead for the localhost (limited function)
server of the amd daemon.

It's not my doing the daemon implemented the concurrent mounting
this way, it was done many years ago, I just fixed the bug I
found. I also don't think re-implementing the concurrent mounting
is an option and neither is converting amd to use pthreads which
I think are the only ways around this.

I implemented an NFSv3 server for amd when NFSv2 was dropped and
while implementing an NFSv4 server might not be that all that
difficult I really would rather not go there, especially since
there's nothing to gain from doing it.

There would need to be a decent number of am-utils package users
that can demonstrate that they can't use the amd format map support
now present in the Linux autofs automounter. I accept that the way
autofs handles amd maps internally (necessarily) isn't the same as
that of amd and amd users might not be terribly happy with it but
that's the way it is. To change that would be a very significant
amount of work that may or may not work in the end and will almost
certainly disrupt existing functionality and still not get entirely
the same behaviour.

Speaking of behaviour, I mean the way mounts are performed internally
not semantic behaviour, amd format maps should themselves behave as
expected for the amd map features that are supported in autofs (and
that's a fairly large portion of the amd functionality).

rust toolset is not needed. Rust is on epel7.

It is rust-1.40 .
Unfortunately rust is changed too fast, and Mozilla-based code (Firefox,
Seamonkey etc.) just does not keep up with it.

It is a reason why current Firefox-ESR for RHEL7 is compiled by
rust-1.35 (from toolset), and there is no more recent rust's toolsets
yet in RHEL7.

rust toolset is not needed. Rust is on epel7. And so is llvm7.0 so

My 1.5 broken-cryptocurrency cents on this one.

I think we should make a serious and great effort to put the users
first remind us of this in every breaking decision we make. For
example, in Fedora 31, we don't have docker out of the box; though,
podman is awesome. This is a good example of how we ask that users
align into, often awesome, new technology paradigms, but it breaks
user's environments and it takes more work to make Fedora your main
OS.

This is why we have, in every release, so many articles and scripts
that "fix" Fedora, so that the user doesn't have to.

Making sure we don't break the user's experience is key, IMHO.

Making sure that software doesn't break is key as well. Things should
just work. Also, we should through some configuration help there as
well; not provide stuff as vanilla as we have for years. For example,
just recently, the nginx configuration took into account php-fpm (as
an example that comes to mind). For several releases, one had to do
this manually.

We should provide an environment that welcomes 3rd parties. We want
companies to make Fedora their go-to distro. Wouldn't be awesome that
docker showed examples of how to do stuff in Fedora first; rather than
Ubuntu? Same goes for k8s, raspberry pi,

Bring the companies and the companies will bring the users.

That's what I can think of right now, hehe.

OK this is just messed up. The newer version only has the older

Sorry, this was a typo. I meant: it doesn't have as many features as
gitlab.com.

In my opinion, I think this is where Red Hat should be helping. Pagure
has a chance to change what free projects use for software
development. Github isn't free (though they do some nice things for
free software). Gitlab is open core, which means they have a conflict
of interest when accepting improvements from outsiders. They could
also stop supporting the open core at any time, leaving users who want
infrastructure running on free software in a poor place.

I completely agree with this.  I find it rather bizarre that I came to
know FOSS almost exclusively because of Red Hat, yet it seems the
majority of the projects I contribute to are now being hosted on Github,
a Microsoft-owned company.  I'd be rather incredulous if someone told me
it was going to be like this back in the 90s.  I've little experience
with Gitlab, but plenty with Pagure from an internal instance and a few
projects on pagure.io like Koji.  I love Pagure and all this talk of
possibly pushing it aside for Fedora makes me sad.  I thought it was the
way forward and was just getting to an excellent footing.  Pagure might
not be a money-making product but it sure can help build a community in
an environment that is void of any potential corporate hostility.
