Sure, the neuro-sig group has been added with commit rights and the PR has been
merged!

If you need any help with the Spyder package, please let me know.

I really appreciate your feedback and recommendation :-)

I'll take a look into rpmautospec

Re: Orphaned packages looking for new maintainers

2023-09-04 Thread Ben Beasley
Interested parties have been grappling with the problem of getting protobuf
updated to v4 (22.x, 23.x, etc.), but the number of impacted packages is
tremendous and there are not enough people with time to work on it, so progress
has been slow. The following PR represents the state of that work[1]. Note that
I’m not a co-maintainer of protobuf, but I’ve been collaborating on it because
it is an important dependency for grpc, and I can’t update grpc any more
(including for security fixes) until we have protobuf v4.

There was some sentiment that we should focus on working toward the protobuf v4
transition rather than on updating to newer 3.x branches during the F39
development cycle. However, I’m not sure if everyone really understood the full
scope of that transition.

At this point, and given the amount of work remaining to make protobuf v4
possible, it’s probably a good idea for protobuf to be updated to a current v3
release, ideally 3.24.2. Given the number of potentially impacted packages, and
the huge list of packages that need to be rebuilt (minor version updates break
ABI), it’s probably too late to land that in F39, but it should be possible for
F40, and it would be a good hedge against the possibility that the v4 work
drags on for another release cycle (or more?!).

Input is welcome. Even more welcome is assistance working through unresolved
protobuf v4 incompatibilities in dependent packages.

Re: KDE and GNOME Join Hands To Add Payments To Turn Flathub Into a Store for the Linux Desktop

2023-09-04 Thread Kevin Kofler via devel
Ryan Bach via devel wrote:
> What is so wrong about buying open source software?

IMHO, paying for "off-the-shelf" software is just wrong to begin with. (Of
course, if I want software developed specifically for me, then I expect to
obviously have to pay for that service.) Software can be copied essentially
for free.

And the software is only FOSS if it can be redistributed by anyone at no
charge (otherwise it fails the "freedom to redistribute" (Freedom 2)
criterion), so I expect the repository to do exactly that.

I understand that the "Free" in "Free Software" is not about "free beer",
but free-of-charge repositories are one of GNU/Linux's main features beyond
just being FOSS, just like, e.g., following the POSIX standard (which is not
a Free Software principle either), and as explained above, the Free Software
Definition does require under "Freedom 2" that those are possible.

It looks like you also took python-autopep8.

Could you add neuro-sig group with commit rights for python-autopep8
please? This package is in the dependency stack for Spyder. I've already
adopted other recently orphaned packages needed by Spyder and intent to
fix and update them as needed in order to keep Spyder around.

Btw, you'll find a PR for python-autopep8, which will fix the FTBFS/FTI
bugs and allow me to fix a dependent package.

The issue RHBZ 2155014 has been fixed by adding python3-setuptools as build
requirement. The build passed using mockbuild on my local machine (tested on
f38, f39 and rawhide).

I pushed the change only to rawhide branch, should I do the same for f39?

Since this is my first contribution to a package, could someone take a look at
the process and let me know if there's anything wrong with my commit?

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-iowait/blob/rawhide/f/python-iowait.spec

If everything is fine, I'll comment and maybe close the RHBZ issue.

The change looks fine. Since you have been playing around with adding
changelog entries the old fashioned way [1], may I recommend to convert
the package to autospec with `rpmautospec convert`? That way you will no
longer have to worry about Release: and %changelog entries. The first

It currently both FTI and FTBFS, but the latter one seems to be easily fixable

I'll prep the builds.

Electrum isn't orphaned, but cannot be updated because protobuf is not
being updated. Newer versions require at least protobuf 3.20. I
contacted the protobuf maintainer on 2023-06-04 and never got a reply.

Orphaned packages looking for new maintainers

2023-09-04 Thread Miro Hrončok

The following packages are orphaned and will be retired when they
are orphaned for six weeks, unless someone adopts them. If you know for sure
that the package should be retired, please do so now with a proper reason:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_remove_a_package_at_end_of_life

Note: If you received this mail directly you (co)maintain one of the affected
packages or a package that depends on one. Please adopt the affected package or
retire your depending package to avoid broken dependencies, otherwise your
package will fail to install and/or build when the affected package gets
retired.

Request package ownership via the *Take* button in he left column on

I got the following package:

python-iowait orphan 0 weeks ago

Thanks

Yeh, upstream published a new release of python-mne which was holding
up python-mne-bids but a test failed there too. They've published a fix
for this a few days ago, so it should be fixed asap:

This is all done already. I did it months ago:

https://github.com/fedora-infra/bodhi/pull/4755
https://github.com/fedora-infra/bodhi/pull/4759
https://pagure.io/fedora-infra/ansible/pull-request/1294

https://pagure.io/fedora-infra/ansible/c/842db118e88b987dbb5ab98f4d17556aba0601d6?branch=main

We no longer use PDC for critical path information and, indeed, we
dropped the code for doing so from Bodhi last month:

https://github.com/fedora-infra/bodhi/pull/5431

BTW, the email seems kind of weird. There are lots of places where it
seems like it's referring to external information - "as demonstrated
here", "Previously, we followed this process to update it, but now we
have transitioned to using this method" - but it does not actually link
to anything external, so I have no idea what the references are meant
to be?

PDC replacement proposal

2023-09-04 Thread Tomas Hrcka
Hello all, it took us a few years but we are finally getting rid of the PDC
project. Thanks to the ARC research we identified use cases in our tooling
and proposed solution.

The essential functionalities currently provided by PDC will be
re-implemented in other applications within our release infrastructure, as
there are no immediate plans for their replacement and are currently
maintained

This work is anticipated to span several months for completion. However,
before we embark on this endeavor,

we would like to proactively share our proposed solution with all of you
and gather your valuable feedback.

Below, we outline our strategy to preserve the core functionality of PDC by
leveraging existing applications within our ecosystem.

Current uses of PDC:

Currently, we rely on the Package Database (PDC) for various data
management tasks, including:

   1.

Critical Path Package Tracking: Bodhi leverages PDC to track packages on
   the critical path.
   2.

Retirement of Packages and Service Level Agreements (SLAs): PDC assists
in managing the retirement of packages and their associated SLAs.
   3.

Metadata for Nightly Composes: Our Release Engineering and Fedora
Quality Assurance teams rely on PDC for metadata related to nightly
   composes.

More info on the usage can be found here:
https://fedora-arc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/pdc/users.html

Specific Endpoints in Use:

We interact with the following endpoints in PDC to access and manage our
data:

/rest_api/v1/global-components: This endpoint stores package names.

/rest_api/v1/component-branches: Here, we store SLAs, track active/retired
status, and manage the critical-path flag.

/rest_api/v1/component-branch-slas: An auxiliary endpoint dedicated to SLAs.

/rest_api/v1/compose-images: This endpoint stores essential files, such as
composeinfo.json and image-manifest.json.

/rest_api/v1/releases: It houses metadata on various release types (e.g.,
GA, updates, EUS, AUS, ELS, fast, updates-testing) for product versions,
indicating their active status.

/rest_api/v1/rpms: This endpoint establishes links between RPM packages and
composes.

/rest_api/v1/product-versions: Here, we store major versions of Fedora.

More info on the endpoints:
https://fedora-arc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/pdc/endpoints.html

Upcoming Changes

Bodhi:

Bodhi will assume responsibility for the following tasks, reducing our
reliance on PDC:

/rest_api/v1/releases/: Bodhi will now manage release-related data.

/rest_api/v1/component-branches/: Specifically, Bodhi will handle the
critical-path flag.

Bodhi's existing framework aligns well with releases and components. To
enhance this, we will create an auxiliary table that pairs this data with
additional metadata,

predominantly focusing on the critical-path flag. Previously, we had to
query this information from PDC.

It's essential to note that PDC is not the definitive source of truth for
critical-path packages. The Fedora Project Critical Path Package Wiki
indicates that the source of truth lies within the Fedora Comps repository.

You can find specific information by searching for groups with the
"critical-path-*" prefix, as demonstrated here.

While the data is accessible through DNF, generating it can be
time-consuming. PDC serves as a pre-computed cache.

Previously, we followed this process to update it, but now we have
transitioned to using this method.

The primary application of this information during the Fedora release cycle
is in Bodhi, where it is used to enforce stricter requirements on
critical-path package updates. For further details, please refer to this
link.

Pagure-dist-git:

Pagure-dist-git will take over several responsibilities from PDC, including:

/rest_api/v1/product-versions

/rest_api/v1/global-components

/rest_api/v1/component-branches/

/rest_api/v1/component-branch-slas/

Pagure already has a robust database of global components (repositories)
and product versions (repository branches).

It utilizes the PDC API to query component branches when a package is
retired, and an auxiliary table in Pagure-dist-git will store the reasons
for orphaning these components.

A list of all identified uses of PDC API can be found in the original ARC
investigation: https://fedora-arc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/pdc/users.html

Projects not considered in the original arc investigation:

MDapi

Toddlers

Toddlers took over the functionality of the fedscm-admin tool and it's more
or less a 1:1 rewrite of the tool, use cases should be the same as
fedscm-admin.

Remaining Endpoints:

A few endpoints will remain unchanged:

/rest_api/v1/compose-images/: Given that we primarily store JSON blobs
here, we have decided, based on discussions, to store the JSON data on a
network-accessible file server.

/rest_api/v1/rpms/: This endpoint does not currently have a dedicated
application, but our Quality Assurance team uses it to query packages in
specific composes.

CPE is scheduled to commence work on this project

Re: KDE and GNOME Join Hands To Add Payments To Turn Flathub Into a Store for the Linux Desktop

Am 04.09.23 um 03:48 schrieb Ryan Bach via devel:

Ryan Bach via devel wrote:

First of all, as has been pointed out by others, the headline is misleading,
since KDE and GNOME are not actually parties to the proposal and since the
proposal was not even accepted.

Secondly, IMHO, allowing fee-charging downloads is an anti-feature of an
application repository that I specifically do not want. One of the nicest
features of GNU/Linux is that I can just open the package manager and
download whatever I want without having to pay anything.

And finally, Red Hat trying to monetize the Desktop would be the worst
nightmare. I do not want my desktop GNU/Linux to be "monetized" by anyone,
neither by Red Hat nor by any other company.

What is so wrong about buying open source software?

A lot. It's effectively cheating to your users.

[Bug 2237243] New: Upstream released ExtUtils-ParseXS 3.51

2023-09-04 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2237243

Bug ID: 2237243
   Summary: Upstream released ExtUtils-ParseXS 3.51
   Product: Fedora
   Version: rawhide
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
 Component: perl-ExtUtils-ParseXS
  Severity: medium
  Assignee: jples...@redhat.com
  Reporter: p...@city-fan.org
QA Contact: extras...@fedoraproject.org
CC: jples...@redhat.com, mspa...@redhat.com,
p...@city-fan.org, perl-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org,
ppi...@redhat.com, spo...@gmail.com, st...@silug.org
  Target Milestone: ---
Classification: Fedora

Rawhide currently has ExtUtils-ParseXS 3.51 composed from ExtUtils-ParseXS 3.44
with patches from the main perl release to take it to version 3.51. The 3.51
code has now been released on CPAN, so the patching could be dropped.

The CPAN release has no code changes but there are test suite differences and
also some pod/man documentation isn't included.

Reproducible: Always

Re: KDE and GNOME Join Hands To Add Payments To Turn Flathub Into a Store for the Linux Desktop

The real question should be how to compensate for the
expenses/ressources so that the development is substantially
maintained. Any more concepts? The mentioned one is just one
way. I actually would suggest a micro-pay approach, not for
the software but for the motivation of the developers ...

Orphaned pseudo

2023-09-04 Thread Dominik 'Rathann' Mierzejewski
Hi!
I decided to orphan the pseudo[1] package. I packaged it to address
some issues I had with fakeroot but I don't use either anymore.
Upstream is active, so the package could use an update. There's one
bug open[2]. The package is co-maintained by Igor, but he doesn't
seem to be very active. Cc'd just in case.

Orphaning rubygem-pr_geohash

2023-09-04 Thread Vít Ondruch
I have oprhaned rubygem-pr_geohash. This package is currently FTBFS,
broken by update of rubygem-minitest 5.19. The fix would be likely
trivial. However, this was packaged as a dependency of rubygem-sunspot,
which never got into Fedora after all (rhbz#721061), so it is finally
time to let this package go.
