So are the F39M modular repos empty?? (since I thought they were being
removed)
Maybe they have to stay around for F39 to allow smooth upgrades, is that
the point?

[Test-Announce] Fedora Linux 39 Beta is NO-GO

2023-09-06 Thread Adam Williamson
Due to outstanding blocker bugs[1], we do not have a release candidate
for Fedora Linux 39 Beta. Tomorrow's Go/No-Go meeting is cancelled.

The next Fedora Linux 39 Beta Go/No-Go meeting will be held at
1700 UTC on Thursday 14 September in #fedora-meeting-1. We will aim for
the "target date #1" milestone of 19 September. The release schedule[2]
will be updated accordingly when someone with the appropriate powers
and access to the tool handles my ticket[3].

Exclude i686 builders for noarch packages

2023-09-06 Thread Orion Poplawski

I'm running into an issue where python-rpds-py excludes i686:

# Also rust-rpds is not available on i686
ExcludeArch:%{ix86}

but then my python-nbformat build gets sent to an i686 builder and fails
because python3-rpds-py is not available:

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=105847966

It seems annoying to have to propagate the ExcludeArch up the stack for
this.

Thoughts?

I don't see why it would be "surely wrong".

It's surely ugly, though, and David suggested that two separate builds
might be slightly less ugly, albeit (more) wasteful, but passt takes
seconds to build, after all. New patch posted.

And, of course, after posting, I realize that I'd missed a chunk of the
thread where you explained that you're not a fan of deltas. FWIW,
zchunk doesn't do static deltas, so the only file you need to worry
about on the server/CDN is the latest one.

If this is something you'd be interested in, I'd be happy to help get
it working. If not, I'm happy to fade back into the background. :)

I realize I'm late to the conversation, but what about compressing the
metadata using zchunk, like we do for the DNF metadata? Assuming we
keep a cache of the file locally and that changes (as a percentage of
the whole file) are minimal, this allows you to download only the
differences. The only requirement is that the CDN supports HTTP range
requests.

There is no -lib package split in Fedora currently. The 'passim'
package provides the libraries.
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=2278800 - there
is no 'passim-libs'.

Ah, sorry, I forgot - that error isn't the 'real' error, it's
misleading. That file is actually there, I think. This is the full
error:

Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: Starting passim.service - A local caching
server...
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora (passimd)[2647]: passim.service: Failed to set up mount
namespacing: /run/systemd/mount-rootfs/var/lib/passim/data: No such file or
directory
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora (passimd)[2647]: passim.service: Failed at step
NAMESPACE spawning /usr/libexec/passimd: No such file or directory
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: passim.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=226/NAMESPACE
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: passim.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.

I'm guessing the "failed to set up mount namespacing" thing is the real
problem, and the error about /usr/libexec/passimd not being there is
just some odd consequence of the namespacing problem.

I do think that would be more appropriate. But you'd also need to split
the libs out for this to mean anything.

It hard requires the -lib -- the daemon is a softer requirement ; see below.

I'm confused why the service definition exists but not the binary --
to clarify -- you've got passim-libs installed, but *not* passim --
correct?

It's intentional in that if the feature gets rejected I'd change the
"Recommends" to a "Suggests". If you'd rather me do the opposite (i.e.
move from Suggests to Recommends if the proposal gets accepted) that's
100% okay with me and I can do that tomorrow.

Unretire golly

2023-09-06 Thread Christian Krause
Hello,

According to
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/package-maintainers/Package_Retirement_Process/
I'd like to announce that I'm going to unretire the package "golly".

It was retired because it was FTBFS for too long:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1675048
Probably because upstream did not migrate to Python 3 until 2020.

Right now, upstream is active.

So this is a very long thread and I really don't have time to read the
whole thing and see if this is answered, but I'm a bit confused here.
This message says you're "thinking of adding Passim", but in point of
fact, it appears to have been added to the package set already, and as
of fwupd-1.9.5-2.fc40 (built two days ago), fwupd hard requires it,
which means it's pulled into most Fedora installs. (the spec added an
explicit Recommends: passim, but there is also an autogenerated
requires for "libpassim.so.1()(64bit)", which is provided by passim).

Workstation installs even seems to try and auto-start it on user login:

Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: Starting passim.service - A local caching
server...
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora (passimd)[2647]: passim.service: Failed to set up mount
namespacing: /run/systemd/mount-rootfs/var/lib/passim/data: No such file or
directory
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora (passimd)[2647]: passim.service: Failed at step
NAMESPACE spawning /usr/libexec/passimd: No such file or directory
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: passim.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=226/NAMESPACE
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: passim.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.
Sep 06 02:27:08 fedora systemd[1]: Failed to start passim.service - A local
caching server.

so...at this point, in Rawhide (not F39), this 'thinking of adding'
feature appears to be basically fully implemented already (except for
the service start failing). Was this intentional?

NetworkManager has the same concept, but of course it depends on apps
that use data *caring* about it.

Need help with build failure

2023-09-06 Thread Mattia Verga
python-calcephpy builds were FTB since between the F39 mass rebuild (which
completed fine) and the Cython 3.x change (which started to fail).
While I was waiting for upstream to fix the package for compatibility with
Cython 3.x I tried to rebuild it forcing cython < 3.0, but I got an odd build
failure to which I didn't pay great attention, I simply thought about some
glitch trying to force the cython version to the compat package.

Now that upstream released a new version compatible with Cython 3.x I tried to
update the package, but I still get the odd build failure. It seems that during
the configure script the package complains about being cross-built... the
latest build attempt completed fine on i686 and ppc64le, while failed on other
architectures.

Does anyone have any idea about this?
Thanks
Mattia

In the Windows world, you have a one-click which says 'I am on a metered
line' which is supposed to do things like that. I don't see anything like
that on the Mac but I am only 'learning' it now.

I just realized.. is avahi even on in a default install or would this be an
extra service needed to be turned on and 'configured' (not that avahi needs
much configuring). It isn't on my F38 box, but I have been living in it for
a long time so it could be something I did in the past or something I
inherited from a long ago release.

It seems there is an active fork available:

https://github.com/streambinder/vpnc/

I checked and Arch for example is using the source in that repo for the package:

https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/vpnc/

Just noting in case someone steps in to maintain the package.

In the pkgdb time, the EOL status was basically simply computed from the release
status, ie: what we still have at:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/api/collections
(looks like we should fix the branchname in that json)
but we could just go back to this :)

This is unfortunate as to my knowledge it is still the vpn-client that
would be used for the - at least in Germany - wide spread
Fritz-Box-Devices.
With very recent firmware updates Fritz-Boxes now do offer Wireguard-VPN as
well but not running anything like
a dyndns-client on the Fritz-Box (behind another router supplied by the
internet-provider e.g.) I wasn't able to
configure Wireguard-VPN. With the legacy VPN a port-forwarding on the
router facing the internet was enough.

Would be curious as well if there is anything else available that would
work with the Fritz-Box-VPN.
vpnc btw. has a 'fix' specific to Fritz-Box btw. which might mean that
other implementations might not work for that purpose.

The last co-maintainer who actively maintained the package for the last
few years just stepped back. Since I don't have a use case for it
anymore (and no ability for testing), I'm going to orphan it in the next
few days.

The only package which depends on vpnc is NetworkManager-vpnc.

There is no active upstream for vpnc. However, according to the bug
reports for NetworkManager-vpnc, there might be still a few users.

Just curious - are there other IPsec implementations that could fill the
gap of vpnc? Or is vpnc very specific?

Hmm, what SLAs? With the removal of modularity, the idea of SLAs also died.
Packages are supported until the release for which they are built goes EOL.
So this whole idea and related functionality is not needed.

Updates for Rawhide are created automagically after a successful build, so the
update already exists [0], no need to create it manually. You'll need to do
that only for F39.
