Re: Orphaned packages looking for new maintainers

2023-11-06 Thread Cristian Delgado
Hi, everyone

I want to take over python-gpiozero,but I'm not a packager at the
moment, i'm really eager to contribute to the community.

I update the package, to the latest version upstream, here you can find the
spec file

SPEC:
https://download.copr.fedorainfracloud.org/results/crisdel/python3-gpiozero/fedora-rawhide-x86_64/06589716-python-gpiozero/python-gpiozero.spec
SRPM:

my FAS username is crisdel
I kindly request if someone can sponsor me, I really want to become a
proficient package maintainer so all feedback is always welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Request for comment- tuned replacing power-profiles-daemon plan

2023-11-06 Thread Kate Hsuan
Hi Jelle,

Thank you for the suggestion.

Upower is one of my backup plans and I plan to start to move all the
ppd API and features to Upower.
But considering the comment from Mark Pearson, tuned allows the vendor
to implement their profile in a much more flexible manner.
Also, tuned provides a set of dbus APIs to use so I think it is not
difficult to integrate with GNOME applications.

I strongly recommend you reach out to the KDE folks as well. The
Visual Design Group is a good starting point[1] for discussing the UX
for tuned in KDE Plasma. A Matrix account is required to interact with
most of the KDE folks, but you should already have one through
chat.fedoraproject.org if you don't already have one from elsewhere.

I suspect many of your simple/advanced UX ideas will be fine, but need
to be refined with the VDG to figure out how it should be done.

From the KDE side, we are not strictly speaking, married to the
power-profiles-daemon concept. And the idea of having IHVs actually
provide useful energy tuning profiles so that battery life can be
further extended (thus supplanting tlp as well) is highly appealing.

- Simple (Basic) mode is the original UX design of the power panel so
we don't need to change or redesign it.
- The advanced mode only shows the profile that tuned provides and the
profile can be filtered based on the system architecture or platform
model (Dell, Lenovo...etc). It is my thought and any kinds of ideas
are welcome.

Since there are many kinds of profiles provided by tuned, for example,
VM-specific profiles and profiles for Intel features...etc., that
gives us more room to think about how the UI can be improved. In this
proposal, I listed the probabilities of UX changes to show how we can
propose a new UX for the power panel. If it is difficult to achieve,
the advanced mode can be dropped, and seek for alternative solutions.
:)
For the short-term plan, we would like to address the integration with
tuned. The best result of the first step is that power-profiles-daemon
is replaced by tuned and all the applications, such as gnome, kde,
sysprof...etc run correctly. Then, we will start to think about how
the UX can be improved or an alternative solution to set up the
advanced tuned profiles.

I've handled appstream, appstream-generator, and appstream-data already.

* Flatpak has an upstream change that needs backporting[1] or a new release.
* GNOME Software has a merge request open[2].
* libadwaita has an upstream change that needs backporting[3].
* malcontent needs work done.

Please address these ASAP in some meaningful way and submit the result
into the "f40-build-side-76936" side tag.

Are the contents of the package the same except for the changelog
 entries / Release field?
Then I would not bother trying to fix it.

It is kind of unfortunate that koji does not have guardrails in place
to prevent building branch X against target Y!=X, but that's probably
something that actually needs to work for Modularity or other
 configurations ...

 Fabio

The spec files differ in content (as far as flatpaks are concerned). But
since this package uses separate branches without forwards/merges but
cherry-picks only, i.e. clearly separates branches in git, it would be
surprising not to care about the branch now ... I guess git branches are
still somewhat foreign to how we drive our dist.

Hello,

for gnome-chemistry-utils, the differences are only with release field
and changelog. For gnumeric, f37 has a slightly different
desktop-file-install call in addition.
I would prefer to fix it properly. Due to fewer mass rebuilds older
gnome-chemistry-utils branches should have lower release than the newer
ones. If the problem remains unfixed, I would have to bump the release
to make sure the numbers don't go backwards. For gnumeric this is a bit
less of a problem since there are new versions still being released so
release number would reset soon-ish anyway.
I tried untagging the erroneous builds with
$ koji untag-build
While it worked, I was not able to rebuild from correct branches because
koji was complaining that a build already exists:

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=108660999
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=108661023

Can I request to have the builds removed so that they can be rebuilt
from correct branches?

No, NVRs for successful builds are unique in koji.
The only way to resubmit something that already succeeded is to bump release.

Fabio

Thanks for confirming. I have bumped the releases accordingly.

Best regards,
Julian

Maybe I'm missing something. But can you not just untag the builds from
the side tag they don't belong in?

koji untag-build

Then rebuild into the correct side tag. That step may require that you
bump the release. I'm not entirely sure.

Heads up: jbig2dec 0.20 coming to rawhide

2023-11-06 Thread Michael J Gruber
jbig2dec 0.20 (a bugfix release) was released a while ago, and with the
current ghostscript update, everything is ready for it, as can be seen in
the copr rebuilds:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/mjg/jbig2dec/builds/

I will build jbig2dec 0.20 into a rawhide side tag, along with updates to
dependent packages:

mupdf 1.23.5
python-PyMuPDF 1.23.6
zathura-pdf-mupdf 0.4.1

All of these are interdependent and - besides adjustments to the respective
versions - come with the latest bug fixes.

Cheers

It's a bit unclear if this is a definite plan, a requirement, or more
of a speculative ambition. However, I should probably be clear that
from a GNOME design perspective, an advanced power profile settings
mode would likely be a tough sell. Exposing arbitrary user-defined
profiles would also pose some challenges which it might be difficult
to overcome.

If this change proposal does require UXD changes to GNOME, then I'd
suggest reaching out to us in advance to discuss them.

Wouldn't it also be logical for UPower to replace power-profiles-daemon?
UPower is already integrated into GNOME Settings while tuned is not, not
having an additional dependency might be nicer and beneficial for other
distributions which might not have a tuned package at all.

since this package uses separate branches without forwards/merges but
cherry-picks only, i.e. clearly separates branches in git, it would be
surprising not to care about the branch now ... I guess git branches are
still somewhat foreign to how we drive our dist.

Wrong branch built into side tags, what to do?

2023-11-06 Thread Julian Sikorski

Hello,

I have accidentally built f39/rawhide branch of gnumeric and
gnome-chemistry-utils for f38 and f37 side tags (f39 too but rawhide and
f39 are the same commit). Can this be fixed? Or is the effort not worth
it? Thanks.

Best regards,
Julian

Maybe start with a bug against glibc with the information you
currently have and a means to reproduce it and the toolchains team may
have some pointers to where the problem lies.

Groff: Revert the mapping of special characters for UTF-8 devices introduced in 1.23.0 version

2023-11-06 Thread Lukas Javorsky
Hi,

I'm writing this email to the Fedora community to give you a heads-up about
what we are going to do with the new change introduced to the groff 1.23.0
version [1].
Upstream of groff stopped mapping the special characters (like hyphens,
tilde, ...) to the Basic Latin codes like it previously did.

This change was quite controversial in the Debian community as the
upstreams/maintainers of the man-pages that use these characters in a "not
correct way" wanted this mapping back in the system. It leads to a 1+ hour
read-long email thread [2] with discussions in other threads as well.

The final conclusion in Debian was to revert this change and leave the old
mapping in place as the maintainer of groff received a ton of emails [3]
and didn't want to spend all of his capacity on this issue.

After reading through all of the emails, we've decided to align with the
Debian decision and revert this change, thereby retaining the current
mapping. The main reason for this was to eliminate a bunch of bugs reported
to the groff/man-pages packages about broken manual pages. Our capacity
also has its limits, and we need to spend our resources wisely, and this
decision was based on that. The reproducer and the issue description were
reported in Bugzilla [4], so please read through it, if you are interested.
