There is no proper solution for perl-Syntax-Feature-Loop failure related to
this update. I don't push it into Fedora 38.

What is the *fascination* with splitting and renaming packages this
way? Ansible did this, and confused the heck out of their users by
shoving a hundred add-ons into "ansible" and leaving the actually
useful tools in "ansible-core". Why isn't the core packages left in
the original name for the package, and add-ons published as the
distinct package, rather than this apparently popular and breaking
change reverse procedure?

I've recently tried RHEL builds for these flit tools, and they
interweave badly with a circular build dependency involving of flit,
flit-core, flit-scm. setuptools-scm and exceptiongroups. The dodging
and weaving names of the base packages for their dependencies compound
the difficulties resolving these, at least resolving them from scratch
for RHEL backports.

Agreed, especially considering the recent "bitcoin miner" burdened
modules published at pypi.org. It's very hard to maintain confidence
in a tool suite when any author of a module, upstream, may insert
quite baroque dependency chains.

For context, flit-core is the PEP 517 build backend that we need for use
with %pyproject_* in RPM builds. python3-flit provides the flit CLI that
can be used for basic Python project management (publishing to PyPI and
such). python3-flit and python3-flit-core used to be built from the same
SRPM, but we recently split it into two separate packages to simply the
specfile and help with RHEL builds.

While Python developers can always install the flit CLI with pipx or in
a virtual environment, it is nice to have a global version managed by
the system package manager.

I'll probably end up taking the package.

Regardless, those packages should switch to using flit-core to build.
Pulling in all of flit is not necessary for RPM builds.

openQA Rawhide update failures - we're working on it!

2024-01-25 Thread Adam Williamson
Hi folks! I want to apologize to packagers who have Rawhide updates
stuck on failed openQA tests, and provide an update.

There were two big problems today. First, the Server base disk image
used for some of the tests got regenerated (this happens weekly).
Unfortunately, this meant it got affected by
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2259266 , and no longer
booted. I should have got that grub2 build untagged or the change
reverted sooner - sorry. I was expecting the package to be fixed sooner,
and it didn't occur to me that this image being regenerated was a risk.
I've now got the package untagged, and forced a rebuild of the disk
image using a grub2 build with the patch re-applied (otherwise I'd have
had to wait for the next Rawhide compose to rebuild the image). I'm now
working through re-running all affected tests.

Second, shell-color-prompt was changed[0] to apply the color prompt to
virtual consoles. This broke a large number of openQA tests, as they
often need to do things at root consoles, and to do that they need to
know when they've actually managed to log in to one, and they do this by
screen matching the prompt. Any test which needed to know it was at a
root console was failing. I've updated the 'needle' to match the color
prompt, and am re-running all affected tests.

I anticipate the mess should be cleaned up in about three or four hours
(there are a lot of failures to re-run, and some of the tests take a
while to run). Sorry again for the inconvenience.

I'll probably propose adding shell-color-prompt to the critical path.
That would mean openQA would have gated the update (allowing me to
update the needles *before* it got pushed and broke tests for every
other update), but it also just seems appropriate - theoretically, a bad
change to the package could cause all sorts of consequences, since it
fiddles with the default prompt.

Orphaning python-flit

2024-01-25 Thread Miro Hrončok

Hello.

Now when python-flit-core has been split out of python-flit, I do no longer
have a use-case for python-flit and hence I have orphaned it.

$ repoquery -q --repo=rawhide{,-source} --whatrequires flit
python-perky-0:0.8.2-3.fc39.src
python-pydyf-0:0.8.0-1.fc40.src
python-pyrpm-0:0.14.1-3.fc39.src
python-signature-dispatch-0:1.0.1-4.fc39.src
python-vecrec-0:0.3.1-11.fc40.src
weasyprint-0:60.2-1.fc40.src

The packages would probably build fine with flit-core (happy to help with that
if you are interested).

Hello.

Now when python-flit-core has been split out of python-flit, I do no longer
have a use-case for python-flit and hence I have orphaned it.

$ repoquery -q --repo=rawhide{,-source} --whatrequires flit
python-perky-0:0.8.2-3.fc39.src
python-pydyf-0:0.8.0-1.fc40.src
python-pyrpm-0:0.14.1-3.fc39.src
python-signature-dispatch-0:1.0.1-4.fc39.src
python-vecrec-0:0.3.1-11.fc40.src
weasyprint-0:60.2-1.fc40.src

The packages would probably build fine with flit-core (happy to help with that
if you are interested).

I don't know about Pagure, but you can make bespoke packager dashboards to
show whatever combination of packages/packagers/groups you like :-)

Is there a way to merge PR lists from multiple packages into a single
backlog? We try to keep an eye on the bug list for our components, but
that only works (to some extent …) because Bugzilla allows us to
consolidate everything into a single list. If we had this for PRs, it

You can use the packager dashboard:

https://packager-dashboard.fedoraproject.org/dashboard?users=fweimer,churchyard

On the top right corner, you can click the git icon to only see PRs (probably
not possible via a bookmarked URL but if that is the only blocker for your
workflow, open an issue).

Is there a way to merge PR lists from multiple packages into a single
backlog? We try to keep an eye on the bug list for our components, but
that only works (to some extent …) because Bugzilla allows us to
consolidate everything into a single list. If we had this for PRs, it
would really help, I think.

This is something that has also caused some amount of frustration amongst the
Amazon Linux team and can end up as a pretty large de-motivator for
contributing changes back to Fedora. The context switching back to a long time
ago, and then likely having to re-adapt your changes can certainly lead to
choosing the path of not submitting the change as it’s less hassle.

Is a possible solution to tweak how/what provenpackagers can/do do, and perhaps
surface at a higher level what the global list of “pull requests without
comments for a month” and “open pull requests mentioning CVE or the word
security”? Have it be more of a common pattern to have provenpackagers ack and
merge CRs across the board? Perhaps some tweaking around SIGs so that experts
in the ecosystem in question are looking at CRs there?

We have a similar-ish model to how we maintain packages in Amazon Linux
internally - the key being to avoid SPoF in knowledge, and to enable us to move
fast when needed (e.g. getting an important security update out to customers).

While I am certainly not in favor of more
"Are we there yet?" emails, I wonder if
a gentle reminder every few months
might not be appropriate if there are
open PR's, as, as you say, sometimes
there are valid reasons.

I also wonder if a PR open for more
than, say, 18 months might trigger
a check to make sure the packager
is still active.

Both are un-resourced ideas, of course.

Thanks! I'll merge this when the CI passes.

I cannot log in to src.fp.o unfortunately, so I can't change the
settings. I'll try to remember to do that later.

I updated and build yaksa and checked that mpich is still building
against the updated version. We have quite a few packages depending on
mpich in the neuro-sig pool of packages, so we wouldn't want to see
mpich going FTBFS.

@zbyszek, feel free to add neuro-sig as co-maintainers to the package.
For now there's a PR [1] for you.

I figured it was something like that... That should probably be linked to

So it looks like there needs to be further restrictions placed on ppc64le
and s390x at a minimum and should probably look at discontinuing i686

I would prefer to have this in F40 too (not to block gamescope rebases
(which do require libavif >= 1.0) there for the lifetime of the F40
release), and, this isn't a big of a risky rebase in my opinion (there will
be more impactful and riskier rebases coming far later in the cycle, such
as LLVM rebase, again, in my opinion).

I'm confused .. Wouldn't it be better to do this after branching?
Otherwise you're introducing an SONAME bump into the stabilising
Fedora 40.

[rawhide] libavif soname bump

2024-01-25 Thread Frantisek Zatloukal
In about a week (after mass rebuild before branching), I'll start with
bumping libavif in rawhide from 0.11.x to 1.0.3 (
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/libavif/pull-request/2 , soname bump
from 15 to 16). If I am not missing anything, it should mean ABI-only
change, so all the dependencies that aren't FTBFS should rebuild fine.
Should anything not build, I'll add a compat package not to cause any new
FTIs.

This would affect the following packages:
avif-pixbuf-loader
celestia-common
darktable
efl
gd
kf5-kimageformats
plasma-wallpapers-dynamic
python-imagecodecs
webkit2gtk4.0
webkit2gtk4.1
webkitgtk6.0
xpra

If any of the maintainers would prefer to do the rebuild themselves, please
do feel free to speak up, I'll send the side-tag id here before the rebuild
starts. Otherwise, I'll handle all the rebuilds.

I probably don't have to wait until the mass rebuild is finished, but doing
so will leave me with a calmer sleep.

Great work on this BTW. In my tests it improves zlib uncompression
speed by something like 40%, which for a few tasks (unpacking qcow2
files was one) noticably improves overall performance.
