"It is hard to make predictions, especially about the future",
but it appears that many of the recent non-redis contributors
are cloud company entangled (and were previously willing to
contribute under the BSD-3-Clause license).

Amazon (AWS) is setting up a BSD-licensed fork, but has not yet decided on
the final name:
https://github.com/placeholderkv/placeholderkv

We will see whether that or redict will get the most attention. Cloud
companies like Amazon will probably prefer BSD, whereas contributors worried
about another "Redis, Inc." coming up and taking their forked code
proprietary too will most likely prefer the LGPL fork (redict) (unless they
are unhappy about the use of version 3.0 only of the LGPL by that fork).

Review swap: 2 GAP packages

2024-03-22 Thread Jerry James
With the arrival of GAP 4.13.0 in Rawhide, I find myself in need of 2
more GAP packages (which do some work in C rather than in the GAP
language, for speed):
- gap-pkg-anupq: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2270581
- gap-pkg-fplsa: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2270856

I am happy to swap reviews. Let me know what I can review for you.

Re: Look for help: how to package Rust project

2024-03-22 Thread Ivan Chavero
I have the same problem for an internal project that I'm working on. Since
some of the crates we use are not yet in Fedora we took the decision to
package them ourselves following the Rust Package Guidelines[1] and submit
them to the distribution.
This is more work but remember that if you create the package for the
crates you're using you are helping another developer and making Fedora
better :)

Cheers,
Iván

Hi,

I have updated astyle to the latest 3.4.13 version that changes ABI,
but keeps soname. The 2 dependent packages were successfully rebuilt in
a side-tag.

Yes, these error messages represent all the crate dependencies that
cannot be resolved from Fedora repositories.
They will need to be packaged separately if you want to submit this as
an official package for Fedora.
Or if you want a "quick and dirty" solution for unofficial packages,
you can use "rust2rpm --vendor".

Hello Fabio,

I love this easy way.

But when I try to build in this way, I got the following failure:

 Problem 1: nothing provides requested (crate(ilog/default) >= 1.0.1
with crate(ilog/default) < 2.0.0~)
 Problem 2: nothing provides requested (crate(libublk/default) >=
0.3.0 with crate(libublk/default) < 0.4.0~)
 Problem 3: nothing provides requested (crate(qcow2-rs/default) >=
0.1.2 with crate(qcow2-rs/default) < 0.2.0~)
Problem 4: nothing provides requested (crate(shared_memory/default)
>= 0.12.4 with crate(shared_memory/default) < 0.13.0~)
 Problem 5: nothing provides requested (crate(smol/default) >= 1.3.0
with crate(smol/default) < 2.0.0~)

I guess it is because that all above crate aren't packaged in Fedora,
can you share how to
deal with this issue?

Thanks,
Ming

So I'm not an expert on redis, but it's primarily accessed via sockets,
so the license doesn't actually matter for most users. I expect it will
probably be fine regardless of the choice of license (as long as it
doesn't go crazy and use AGPL).

But redis also has "modules" and I'm not familiar with them. The
modules were switched back to BSD-3-Clause yesterday after I complained
to Neal and then Neal complained to Drew:

https://codeberg.org/redict/redict/commit/d47ce2f24063728c09c3449e5deef3eddb9eceec

But I'm not sure how much that really achieves. If the modules also
link to LGPL-3.0-only code, then that probably accomplishes nothing.

I agree that most GPL or LPGL projects won't be willing to touch
anything that uses an -only license rather than an -or-later license
because the risk of not being able to "upgrade" the license in the
future is extreme and prohibitive. And of course permissively-licensed
projects will not touch anything that uses LGPL-3.0-only or
LGPL-3.0-or-later anyway. But as long as there is the IPC/socket
boundary in the middle, most programs should be fine. I wonder about
these modules, though

Also, the discussion under:
https://discourse.writefreesoftware.org/t/redis-switches-to-dual-source-available-licensing-model/154
makes it pretty clear that the person behind the fork has no intent to make
any compromises on this issue.

For the redis executable, I guess this is not a blocking issue, but they
also intend to fork the hiredis library (which currently is still BSD-
licensed upstream [https://github.com/redis/hiredis]), and there, LGPL 3.0
only would really be a problem in the long run.

It is actually already packaged in Fedora:

But yes, it is bloat.

Once concern I have with this is the use of LGPL 3.0 *only*. This will not
be compatible with a GPL 4 or newer. (The upgrade clause in the LGPLv2 that
allowed that was unfortunately dropped in the LGPLv3, now you have to put
the "or later" clause on the LGPLed code to be compatible with newer GPL

"pretty good" if you only really care about speed. It loses to the much
older xz in almost all compression ratio benchmarks, often significantly
(e.g., xz compresses text (enwik8 testcase) with a factor 4 (*), zstd only
with a factor 2.5 [1]). So I still think zstd is a step backwards compared
to xz.

(*) The factor 4 is with xz -9, but you should always use that because the
decompression is no slower, and in fact actually slightly faster, with it
than with lower compression levels, only the compression is slower, but the
compression happens once on the server.

Re: F41 Change Proposal: Disable openSSL Engine Support (system-wide)

2024-03-22 Thread Luca Boccassi
For an example of missing critical functionality, see this comment:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/29539#issuecomment-1760243611

Aside from that, trying to use the pkcs11 and tpm2 providers just ended up with
unintelligible errors being vomited on the console. No, I did not keep a copy
of those tests, and no, I am not going to try again, as I most definitely do
not have the time nor the interest to become an openssl or pkcs11 expert. This
stuff needs to "just work" by default, without spending days tinkering, and
engines do that just fine, because they have been developed for years.
Providers are just too new, and those that exist need a few more years as
optional features for enthusiasts and experts to adopt and fix all the bugs,
add all the needed features, and make sure they work out of the box. We are not
there yet, and jumping the gun is not going to help anybody.

soname bump: mupdf 1.24.0 coming to rawhide

2024-03-22 Thread Michael J Gruber
Hi there,

We recently switched mupdf to shared builds because part of the
ecosystem relies on this, and because we finally could get upstream to
version the libs. As a consequence, major mupdf updates will include
an soname bump now, and this is the first one.

I built mupdf in a side-tag for rawhide and will rebuild the following
dependencies:

python-PyMuPDF
zathura-pdf-mupdf

There is one more dependency that I'm aware of. Since I don't have
commit rights I filed a PR:
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/qpdfview/pull-request/3

In case I missed a dependency feel free to:

fedpkg build --target=f41-build-side-86089

I have been using copr builds already for a while, so I'm confident
this update can go into F40 as well before the freeze (in a separate
side-tag).

Upstream's focus is not so much on distro-packaging and linux rather
than bundling and other platforms. So we have to see how this goes
abi/bumpwise in the future, but they have been willing to do quite
some work to adjust - kudos to them (Artifex) for that.

Cheers
Michael

Re: Redis will no longer be OSS... now what?

2024-03-22 Thread Remi Collet

Le 21/03/2024 à 19:19, Scott Williams a écrit :

can we really continue to ship redis-7 in Fedora 40 if we can't patch and maintain it?

I don't see any problem keeping Redis 7.2
in Fedora 40 and up for a while.

And having some alternatives (keydb...), to be installed
simultenously (especially for tests)

Then wait for stabilization of the community.
