It is required, as node.js bundles that. That packaging doesn't unbundle anything that isn't supported by upstream, so it uses the bundled http-parser. (Of course, it's quite a bit out of date as I had zero free time this past summer.) The http-parser packaging really needs to be converted to use the upstream GYP build system instead of manually building it, as that has proper support for building as a shared library. (It needs to be taught to use sonames, but that's a trivial patch.)
