List of long term FTBFS packages to be retired in February

2024-02-12 Thread Miro Hrončok

Dear maintainers.

Based on the current fail to build from source policy, the following packages
should be retired from Fedora 40 approximately one week before branching.

5 weekly reminders are required, hence the retirement will happen
approximately in 3 weeks, i.e. around 2024-02-28.
Since this is unfortunately after the branching,
packages will be retired on rawhide and f40.

I apologize for starting this process a bit later than required again.
Unfortunately, I had other work obligations.
Volunteers to take over this are always welcome.

Policy:

I think this project should be retired. The upstream repo has been archives
with a message that Intel no longer supports this project.

I'll rebuild mpich without this dependency.

I worked around the build failure for ftbfs and updated this package,
it doesn't like parallel builds, there's upstream reports but it
appears not to be getting attention from the maintainers even though
they're doing newer releases.

I updated and build yaksa and checked that mpich is still building

mpich in the neuro-sig pool of packages, so we wouldn't want to see

Sure, I can do that. What we really ought to do is remove all
dependencies on this package and retire it. It is ASDF 2.x. AFAIK,
both ecl and sbcl ship with ASDF 3.x. I'm not sure about gcl.

Anyway, that will take more work than I have time for right now. I'll
add it to my TODO list.

WTH is this? Your script seems broken.

This is a 2-level deep dependency on a package that fails to build.

Thanks for your feedback. Occasionally, "my" script is broken, but what you
reported is not actually incorrect. See further.

Neither is cicku a maintainer of freefem++

nor did it fail to build.

It did not. It depends on openmpi which depends on infinipath-psm which fails
to build.

Actually
this package had been built several times in recent months/weeks. Koji lists it
as having been rebuilt today!

Correct.

And while we are at it: Why is cicku still listed as a maintainer?

I don't know.

He was removed from Fedora by force due to a FESCO decision many years ago. I
don't recall the details, but this can easily be 10 years ago.

Then, perhaps the removal was not complete.

Various tedious build errors on different archs, which don't look fun to

I am certainly guilty of using ASSIGNED to get rid of reminders.

No, please don't make it longer. I think it's fine as is. If it's any
longer then we get packages that cannot be built from source at all, not
even on F36 in this example, and this can lead to very bad situations if
some urgent reason comes up to rebuild them.

Why isn't automatic orphaning at the beginning of this countdown part of this
policy, so that others have the chance to take and fix the package? If
someone (other than the maintainer, who should already be well aware) were to
just now notice that one of these packages were about to be retired, there
isn't really enough time to go through the BZ route to get it orphaned first.

That is a good question.

The original idea is that FTBFS packages are orphaned when the maintainers
don't respond to the FTBFS bugzillas. But many do set the bugzillas to
ASSIGNED to avoid the orphaning or sometimes the FTBFS bugzillas are closed
in mistake or not opened at all.

Well, if it's ASSIGNED, you don't want to orphan it, the maintainer is
working on it right?

Unfortunately, as seen by the lenght of the packages listed in my emails, thsi
is not always the case.

Some packagers do set the bugzillas to ASSIGNED to get rid of the reminders and
then they forget to actually fix the FTBFS, cannot figure out how to fix it,
are blocked on externalities that never happen, etc.

I suppose orphaning the packages first would make perfect sense, but the
devil is in the details. I suppose packagers might feel bad if suddenly
"their" packages are orphaned without any reminder or warning of some sort.

Yeah, I think that would be quite bad.

So we would need to modify the policy from:

1. warn
2. warn
3. warn
4. warn
5. warn
6. retire

To something like:

1. warn
2. warn
3. warn
4. orphan
5. warn
6. warn
7. warn
8. retire

And make the process much longer. And we would need to figure out what to do
if the package is taken (unorphaned) in between 4. and 8. without being
fixed.

I suppose FTBFS is less urgent and FTI bugs... perhaps they should be
different in this process?

Oh but they are different. FTBFS are not urgent and the policy is only set to
retire packages that FTBFS for more than 2 release cycles.

For a package to be considered for retirement in February 23, it would have to
fail to build:

 - During the Fedora 36 mass rebuild in January 22.
 - During the Fedora 37 mass rebuild in July 22.
 - During the Fedora 38 mass rebuild in January 23.

That is not urgent, that is "not being fixed".

We can make this even longer, but I don't think it'll make a difference --
eventually we will just get a list of packages that aren't beign fixed, but for
a longer time.

I suppose orphaning the packages first would make perfect sense, but the devil

I am deliberately avoiding the option to modify the policy to:

1. warn
2. warn
3. warn
4. warn
5. warn
6. orphan
7. wait
8. wait
9. wait
10. wait
11. wait
12. retire via the orphan policy

Because folks will take the packages (and not fix them) between 6. and 12. --
it is often done by the previous maintainers (I don't really understand why) or
by new maintainers who take the package without realizing they have been
orphaned due to FTBFS.

Thanks. Since this is all done by a human you can just give me a definitive lit
of package you want to maintain instead of letting them be retired and I can
assign them to you and let you merge the PRs instead of retiring them. That
offer stands for anybody.

However, note that I would very much prefer if you followed the nonresponsive

responsive maintainers.

Hi,

yes, un-addressed mail (bcc) is insufficient to contact package maintainers;
thanks for the ping. I am aware of the issue thanks to Bugzilla, and am actively
working to find a resolution.

The current problem is that libQGLViewer (cc'd) was last updated 5 years ago,
and the up-to-date version of IQmol that supports OpenBabel3 needs a more recent
version of libQGLViewer.

I am in favor of removing buildnumber-maven-plugin.
In all my packages this plugin is explicitly disabled as it is not
very useful for building Fedora packages.

I should note that I intend to do the latter for jakarta-json. If
somebody wants to keep maven-scm or buildnumber-maven-plugin in
Fedora, feel free to take anything you want from that COPR, remove my
name, and slap your own in there. I'm not going to do it, however.

For those affected by this, I've made a COPR with a possible
resolution:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/jjames/buildnumber-maven-plugin/.
Things to note:

- plexus-interactivity must be unretired.
- I first tried updating maven-scm to version 1.13.0, but it requires
an older version of jgit than we have in Fedora Rawhide. It would not
build. I had to go to 2.0.0-M3 to get a successful build.
- There is a possible XMvn bug affecting maven-scm. See the comment
in the %build section. There are duplicate entries in .xmvn-reactor
for every pom.xml that includes pom. I'm not
certain if this is an XMvn bug, or if the maven-scm pom.xml files are
wrong somehow.
- buildnumber-maven-plugin version 1.4 was too old, so I moved all the
way to 3.0.0. Even then, it needed a small patch to work with
maven-scm 2.0.0.

Or we can all remove mvn-scm and buildnumber-maven-plugin from our
respective packages' POMs.

These two are also still in use by ghc for some archs: aarch64 (ghc,
ghc8.10, ghc9.0) and s390x (ghc9.2 and ghc9.4).
Though I am planning to move them to only llvm12 at least for F38.

Anyway I think I may be able to workaround these by disabling the testsuite
probably...

llvm9.0  jistone, petersen, tstellar

I think this could be retired now. At least I am not aware of any

Can you just remove it from the list to stay on the safe side?

Retiring it from rawhide would not change anything in the infrastructure at all
considering the package does not currently even install.

I trust it will be fixed in time, I am watching the nss review request (it has
been approved).

I was initially thinking I should just retire grhino, which has not been
updated since 2010 and will be affected by libgnome retirement, but...
there's a lot of other packages that will be affected if libgnome is
pulled.

Is it still worth maintaining? If libgnome should be retired I guess we
should proactively retire them now rather than waiting after the mass
rebuild then having to untag packages from f38 too.

A virtual QXL device can be driven by a generic VGA driver. The QXL
2d acceleration primitives are not worth using in modern OS which are
only really interested in 3d acceleration, so the xorg qxl driver is
not a blocker. Some further details in:

Could you please exclude this ^^ from the list?

I am afraid I can't exclude packages just like that. If you believe
this package should be exempted from the policy I would need some
reasoning for that.

While this package is on life support, removing it won't make the
situation any better :/

Nothing seems to depend on it in Fedora. What's the point of keeping it?

I would not ask if this was true, however:

~~~
$ sudo dnf repoquery --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=rawhide
--enablerepo=rawhide-source --whatrequires js-coffee-script
Last metadata expiration check: 0:02:28 ago on Wed Jan 11 14:51:48 2023.
~~~

but also:

~~~
$ sudo dnf repoquery --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=rawhide
--enablerepo=rawhide-source --whatrequires coffee-script
Last metadata expiration check: 0:02:47 ago on Wed Jan 11 14:51:48 2023.
perl-Mojolicious-Plugin-AssetPack-0:2.13-6.fc37.src
vim-syntastic-coffee-0:3.10.0-16.fc37.noarch
~~~

I have also looked into the FTBFS:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2045266#c5

And have got no response:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2123435

There also was rename/update attempt which was deferred for the time
being.

Until when?

I don't think that coffee-script-source gem is going to be ever updated.
So this would need to rename coffee-script to coffee-script1 and
introduce the coffee-script. But that still means that the FTBFS needs
to be fixed.

Maybe these dependencies could be dropped:

~~~
$ sudo dnf repoquery --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=rawhide
--enablerepo=rawhide-source --whatrequires "rubygem-coffee-script-source"
Poslední kontrola metadat: před 0:06:25, St 2. listopadu 2022, 17:22:45.
rubygem-coffee-script-0:2.4.1-15.fc37.src
rubygem-coffee-script-source-doc-0:1.10.0-14.fc37.noarch
$ sudo dnf repoquery --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=rawhide
--enablerepo=rawhide-source --whatrequires "rubygem-coffee-script"
Poslední kontrola metadat: před 0:06:34, St 2. listopadu 2022, 17:22:45.
rubygem-actioncable-0:7.0.4-1.fc38.src
rubygem-coffee-script-doc-0:2.4.1-15.fc37.noarch
rubygem-sinatra-1:2.2.0-3.fc37.src
rubygem-sprockets-0:4.0.2-5.fc37.src
rubygem-tilt-0:2.0.10-8.fc37.src
~~~

But somebody would need to take a look at them a disable some of the
test cases which would be impacted by dropping coffee-script.

Sorry, I don't have any better answer :/

Note that sugar-visualmatch was already retired when we had this conversation,
because it was orphaned for 6+ weeks. No idea why it was still part of the
report. You might want to unretire it.

I use gmpc and was thinking of saving it, but it really seems pretty
dead upstream (it's still gtk2 even).

On looking though, my needs are met by cantata. I just thought I would
mention to any gmpc users out there to take a look at cantata and see if
it works as a replacement for them. :)
