first play with new XO 1.5 machines

2009-10-20 Thread Tabitha Roder
Testing 5 of the new XO 1.5 machines - our first experiences...

hardware seems more responsive

great touch pad - can feel edges and has tap click on touch pad so you
dont have to push the button, we like it

video card issues with on screen animations - e.g. frame gives flickers
on boot the display is a mass of colours - some kind of video driver fault

many keys only work intermittently on some of these XOs. particularly
- frame key and the key next to it, search key, function key, hand
keys, divide/multiply key.

no mesh network showing in neighbourhood, could connect to our home
wifi and browse internet, intermittently can see other XOs here (once
we took out jabber.sugarlabs.org from network settings in my settings)

the new record activity has no camera, only audio!

camera issues... video for linux working but doesnt like what it
finds, a driver issue? doesnt know about the camera? tried looking for
it, lspci, lshal, lsmod, no luck

question - why is there a /media/boot in the frame next to the battery
indicator and volume indicator,
we took it apart and found there was a 4GB micro SD card for
nonvolatile storage and think 8GB SD RAM? so upgradeable?

more testing to come, will keep everyone informed

G'day Tabitha,

Several of the experiences you mention are common to the recent Fedora
11 builds on both XO-1 and XO-1.5 machines. Some are peculiar to the
XO-1.5 machines while development is continuing.

This trac query:
http://dev.laptop.org/query?status=assignedstatus=newstatus=reopenedgroup=componentorder=prioritycol=idcol=summarycol=statuscol=typecol=prioritymilestone=1.5-F11
shows the experiences that are known to be peculiar to the XO-1.5.

Agreed.

Agreed, the edges are helpful. I'd not noticed tap click. It works.

video card issues with on screen animations - e.g. frame gives
flickers on boot the display is a mass of colours - some kind of video
 driver fault

Boot animation corruption I also observed on os30, but not on os32. You
didn't mention which build you were using.

Frame giving flickers is #9333.

many keys only work intermittently on some of these XOs. particularly
 - frame key and the key next to it, search key, function key, hand
 keys, divide/multiply key.

I've not reproduced this. I heard about a problem fixed in latest
firmware. You didn't mention which firmware you were using.

no mesh network showing in neighbourhood, could connect to our home
wifi and browse internet, intermittently can see other XOs here (once
we took out jabber.sugarlabs.org from network settings in my settings)

#9343

camera issues... video for linux working but doesnt like what it
finds, a driver issue? doesnt know about the camera? tried looking for
it, lspci, lshal, lsmod, no luck

#9326

question - why is there a /media/boot in the frame next to the battery
 indicator and volume indicator,

Pass. I hadn't noticed that. It isn't there for me at the moment. I
wonder why Sugar is showing it.

On mine, I see two battery indicators, #9353 relates.

we took it apart and found there was a 4GB micro SD card for
 nonvolatile storage [...]

Yes.

 and think 8GB SD RAM?

No.

 so upgradeable?

If you mean field upgrading of the micro SD card ... that would be a
deployment team nightmare, but yes, I guess so. I'd hate to price it.
;-)

The RAM is not field upgradable.

The micro SD card is probably factory upgradable ... if prices or
deployment needs change prior to order, work could be done to meet
demand ... at some price.

It would be interesting to find if this fails in the same way on Fedora
11 on XO-1.

What's the proper procedure to report bugs encountered on the 1.5?

E.g., I just filed

https://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9524

which may or may not be unique to 1.5, but I set it to 1.5-F11 because
that's where I saw it.

This may be the related to as

https://dev.laptop.org/ticket/6811
https://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9153

or maybe not - there are so many old tickets in the tracker that it's
hard to tell.

Also not sure if it's related to suspend/resume - does the 1.5 on os32
auto-suspend on AC? It seemed like only the screen was blanked after
some idle time.

I saw the SD icon too, in the Journal of the pre-installed OS. It's
gone in os32.

That is correct -- use the 1.5-F11 milestone. And here is the list of
stuff the XO team is working on:

Has anyone installed the XS on a netbook?
The big issue is that there is no optical drive, but beyond that I was
 wondering if that would work.

Definitely works for me :-) See the XS_Techniques page for hints on

 - Installing from USB. I've added notes there on how to avoid the
installer crashes.

 - How to run your wlan0 as the WAN port. Note: you can create an
ifcfg-wlan0 to configure it fully, but it gets messy trying to connect
to WPA-protected APs on boot.

 - Using xs_swapnics to make your eth0 into eth1 so you can hook up
an AP there.

If you are very lucky, your netbook may have a WLAN that can run as an
AP (using a hostap driver). That'd be nice to see in action too.

If your netbook has a small HD, might be wise to disable the backup
service. Just comment out the relevant parts in
/etc/httpd/conf.d/ds-backup.conf file and restart apache...

cheers,

no, no auto-suspend on AC or battery, yet. we're waiting until the
display remains functional across a suspend/resume before enabling
any sort of power management. your screen is blanking due to DPMS,
which we should be disabling.

we've switched to a partitioned filesystem scheme. OFW and /boot
can agree on a single filesystem type, and we can have more
freedom to change the type of / more flexibly (e.g., ext4, ext5,
ext6,... ext3). in pre-os32, the system was seeing the extra
available partition and mounting it, just as it would an external
SD or USB.

One can also check the 1.5 tickets at http://dev.laptop.org/1.5

P.S. Remember - if it's not in trac, it doesn't exist. If you find a
problem, check trac and open a ticket if it's not already there.
Tabitha correctly labeled this thread as playing with 1.5, which is
fine and a great start - testing means entering any strangenesses
into trac. Thanks!

It also has a fun feature for your amusement:

ok screen-ih iselect
ok 40 30 set-scaled-resolution

set-scaled-resolution, but not with resolutions larger than the
