G1G1 updates, Lennon video and other vids

2008-12-27 Thread Samuel Klein
Hi,

The Lennon video that's been murmured about for weeks has been
released. I'm curious to see reactions from the list. If anyone
makes a screensaver version of the opening sequence, which I love,
I'll send you my first attempt at a memory-doubled XO. I'm hoping to
get more details about how it was made to post as well... It's had
50,000 views (wow, make that 65k since I wrote this draft at lunch) in
the past day. Details and a couple other awesome video links are up
on the blog.
  http://blog.laptop.org

Quick G1G1 updates :
1. The first batch of international G1G1 machines should all have
arrived this week, in time for Christmas.
Some people in Europe weren't sure about when the program is ending;
while we didn't announce a specific date, it is likely to stop after
December 31st.
While there was been discussion about continuing G1G1 for a short
while longer in the US, that may end at the same time.
   http://blog.laptop.org/2008/12/24/g1g1-international-update/

2. There is a form you can fill out if you'd like OLPC to mail a
thank-you card to someone when you donate on their behalf, and a
downloadable PDF of the card you can send directly:
   http://laptop.org/thankyou/donationform.html
   http://laptop.org/thankyou/OLPC_GiftCard.pdf

I hope we can use a lot of these for the ongoing give-a-school program
(whatever it is called!). If you make translations (of the form or
card), post details to localization@ and web-t...@laptop .

Holiday spirits,

personal opinion here, I don't like using digital fakery to make dead
celebreties say things that they never said (movies that are clearly
fiction are an exception to this)

In this case I think the quality of the audio splicing also leave a lot to
be desired (but then again, I've never listened to recordings of Lennon
talking, so it could be his real speech pattern)

the other videos on the blog are very interesting. I hadn't heard of this
blog before, thanks for the pointer.

That is a fine point, Mikus.
We are working with dailymotion to provide an archive of all olpc
videos formatted cleanly for the XO.

http://www.dailymotion.com/factory/olpc
http://olpc.dailymotion.com/

for the time being, you can just write to web-t...@lists.laptop.org if
there's a video you want to see that isn't up there.
the message from Lennon already is.

If you still want the originals for download, you can find some at
media.laptop.org, but that machine isn't designed to take much
traffic.
http://media.laptop.org/zimi/
http://media.laptop.org/brandvideos/

You can also see other videos uploaded to the olpc group at DM, which
are automatically converted and moved there (once they are approved
for group inclusion), so if you already have a vid you want others to
be able to see on their XO, make a DM account and post it to
http://www.dailymotion.com/olpc

where it will join

http://olpc.dailymotion.com/video/x7ft2t_olpc-mission-video-part-1_tech
http://olpc.dailymotion.com/video/x7ft5g_olpc-mission-video-part-2_tech

along with a large collection of Plonsters claymations, a /huge/
collection of Cullen Wood kids' videos, and more.

Sebastien - I think we may need another way to navigate (a set of
numbers in addition to ) now that the group's broken 400
videos...

David,

I believe it's his real speech, with a few composite moments. It
sounds like other interviews I've heard -- and different from most
singing voice examples in my head. You're not alone in making that
comment about the voice. Feel free to suggest post topics or
additional videos to review for the blog in the comments.

I only like the beginning - flying XOs... the first attempt for a
forthcoming screensaver activity?

For the rest of it, it sounds fake, it's too short, what we see and
hear is nothing but a distraction from the core message. Looks like
people have been playing with a beautiful idea, but ended up with a
toy-movie.

My favorite so far is Waveplace's one:

My thoughts exactly. I'd like to know who wrote the code for that.

It certainly has the best imagery of kids in XO schools.
Has that white-on-black version of the logo appeared anywhere else?

Well it's united Lennon fans, OLPC h8ters, the usual foul-mouthed
losers, and the common reaction How are kids going to use laptops in
the middle of the jungle? give them food! I responded to a few of the
last, and all my comments got voted off the island.

If you have a youtube account, vote the reasonable responses up.

Aha! Yes, I've made that a response to the recent spot. As for the
comments... this is a chance to work on your skill at teaching through
one-liners.
There are a few other great videos up that are worth sharing where
appropriate; Joels video of an 8 and 10-year old repairing a keyboard
comes to mind. For those who haven't seen it:

samurai-x2: Python-based window manager

2008-12-27 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

Recently it was discussed here why no Python library existed that
interacted directly with core X11.

Today I saw mentioned at lwn.net the Python-based window manager
samurai-x2 which might be interesting in relation to that, and perhaps
even more concretely as a default Window manager for Sugar?

More info here: http://samurai-x.org/

And here: http://lwn.net/Articles/312681/

If there is interest, I would be happy to attempt packaging samurai-x2
for Debian. I have plenty of other interesting tasks too, so will only
do if if someone finds it relevant.
