[PATCH linux] Fix double accelerometer initialisation

2011-11-22 Thread Sascha Silbe
The lis3lv02d driver doesn't support multiple instances of itself, so we need

avoids logging an error message about not being able to initialise the 8-bit
sensor on C1 and above.

I'd like to boot off USB and look at my XO-1's NAND filesystem. But
the wiki instructions for booting off USB[1] were out of date. I've
updated them to de-emphasize the .ext3.img that's no longer built, but
can't find instructions for what's in current builds. There have been
mail threads and bug reports on the subject, recently 11.2.0 XO-1
boot from USB or SD doesn't work for me[2] which wound up providing
workarounds [3] without explaining how to get started. I think there
was a more recent thread but I can't find it.

Sorry that this boot path is a bit neglected. I've made some changes
for 12.1.0 which should make it a little easier and solve one of the
core issues behind this, but it is still a bit of a nasty process for
USB since it requires you to arrange the files in a special way (or
you may wish to take another approach like the one you found in this
thread, which is perhaps a little less horrifying). I posted info
here: http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/11233#comment:8

PulseAudio vs XO hardware drivers

2011-11-22 Thread Martin Langhoff
IIRC, there was a hard/deep/complex bug that held us from using PA in XO-1
and/or XO-1.5 . Not just a run of the mill early PA bug, nor the usual CPU
consumption concerns, 'twas a really hard one.

Unfortunately searching isn't leading to the right report :-/ -- so I
appeal to our communal elephant memories...

Re: Re: [Sugar-devel] automatic backlight control

2011-11-22 Thread forster
Thanks Paul

The logic appears to be buggy, see #11487: XO-1.75 OS12 backlight is off when
you come back inside

As it stands, neither the monochrome nor colour modes are OK in full sunlight.
The colour mode causes a significant loss of resolution for reading small black
text and even more resolution loss with coloured text.

With the monochrome mode, the shadow of your hands as you type is enough to
switch mode which is quite distracting

The cutin cutout settings are 50 (bright)and 80 (dark). It does not seem worth
raising the 80 figure because there is still visible colour information at 70.
The 50 figure could be lowered, direct sunlight is 5-10, so I tried 15, this
still could give mode switching from your hands' shadow in direct sunlight.

What I suggest is that the backlight not switch off unless you have been in the
sun for (eg) 5 minutes, but switch back on immediately in the dark. I don't
have the coding skills or I would have tried it out.

For anybody who wants to try it
powerd is at
/usr/sbin/power

the brightness settings are at line1853
monochrome is commented out at lines 1764 1793

uncommenting these lines reenables monochrome in response to the sensor but
surprisingly not the control keys

Tony

 fors...@ozonline.com.au wrote:
The shift from colour to monochrome is noticable and would be annoying if
 it
happened a lot, for example as clouds pass, trees and people move.

If the hysterisis, the difference between cutin and cutout brightness is
 large,
the change in mode will happen a lot less frequently and not be annoying.

I would like to try it switching automatically to monochrome but with
 large
   hysterisis.

   I'll wait to try OS12

you may be in a better position to play with this, geographically
speaking, than i am -- we're running low on sunlight these days.

the hysteresis is currently hard-coded in powerd -- you'll find it in
the function ambient_adjust_init(). it only gets set once, though, so
after powerd starts, you can change the limits directly and they
 should take effect immediately.

additionally, to cause auto-monochrome to happen, uncomment the
obvious lines at the end of set_brightness() and brightness_ramp().

Yes, many C1 exist. Sorry about the Wiki page.

Tested your patch with 5611fd36a7b30edac640e1bd8ab2948ca91d09d5 by
Andres, since this is needed for board detect to work, and also with
q4c05jc [1] which changes /proc/device-tree/openprom/architecture to
OLPC.

On an XO-1.75 C1 with new accelerometer, dmesg contains:

lis3lv02d: 16 bits sensor found
input: ST LIS3LV02DL Accelerometer as /devices/platform/lis3lv02d/input/input0

On an XO-1.75 B1 with old accelerometer, dmesg contains:

lis3lv02d: 8 bits sensor found
input: ST LIS3LV02DL Accelerometer as /devices/platform/lis3lv02d/input/input0

On an XO-1.75 B1 with new accelerometer, dmesg contains:

lis3lv02d: unknown sensor type 0x87
lis3lv02d_i2c: probe of 5-001d failed with error -22

On an XO-1.75 B4 with new accelerometer, dmesg contains:

lis3lv02d: unknown sensor type 0x87
lis3lv02d_i2c: probe of 5-001d failed with error -22

So effectively your patch breaks XO-1.75 B1 and B4 with new
accelerometer chip.  ;-}
