One thought would be to add them to the langpack self-installing
scripts as needed so that a given langpack also carries the necessary
keyboard layout with it.

Well it is if you use browse to view activities.sugarlabs.org, but I
suspect the activity was downloaded to a usbkey on a different machine then
auto installed by launching it from the usbkey. Think the real fix might
run deep into sugar's inner workings, some discussion at

Best way to use SD card to increase XO-1 space

2012-10-07 Thread Roshan Karki
We have around 4000 XO-1s deployed around the country but we are still
stuck with Sugar .82.1 . We do have upgrade plan but not anytime soon. Our
educational software EPaath has grown to whooping 503 MB and thus we are
desperately in need of some space.

We would want to test one mini deployment with SD card. So I'm wondering
what the best way would be to use SD card to increase XO-1 storage.

My initial idea is to softlink /home/olpc/Activities to SD card.

Any comment, suggestion, feedback?

Tests 13.1.0 devel build 5

2012-10-07 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn
Hi,
I download the image for my XO-1 and found a few of problems:
-connect to wifi: my router have an encrypted network, and when I click on them
to conenct, the "enter your password" window not appears.-the keyboard option in
the "control panel" not works. If you click some times, the XO
reboots!!-DESIGN: the cross of the GTK text box no are vertical centered (see
attach image gtk_text_box.png)-the home, in the list view, sometimes shows an
strange name of the activities (I think a badredraw.. I attach:
home_list_view.png)-why the summary info no appears in the home list view
yet?-in the journal: why don't have multi-select option? that is a good feature!

IIRC, Richard warned about connecting an XO's USB socket to any USB

as i said the other day, the kernel driver should either do no scaling
by default, or it should make every pixel on the screen touchable with
a "standard" pointing instrument (i.e., a stylus). the latter is what
it does now -- perhaps exaggerated. but any other midway decision
between those extremes (which i agree is probably the right thing)
constitutes policy, and therefore belongs at user level.

which is to say, i think the correct defaults belong in olpc-utils,
along with the countless other XO useablility tweaks that are already
there.

(once that change is firmly in place, i'll probably revert the driver to
default to no scaling at all.)

Let's DTRT: coordinate with Reuben to make sure we have good coverage

Not quite all the layouts, but the vast majority are done in both landscape and
portrait. I have Türkçe, Українська, Việt, and 1 usable (out of 3 due to the
need of the others for a proprietary glyph composition engine) Chinese
keyboards still to do, and some general bug fixes on several extended keys I
spotted while testing. Expect an updated set of similar patches before build
lockdown. There is also still the hanging question with regard for the need for
additional keyboards for existing or potential deployments. Armenia has been
raised as one possible extra, but not yet confirmed. Perhaps once XO-4's start
to land and folks play with the OSK we'll see some formal requests.

Installed, quick test. You're right, the ebook trigger isn't
happening. And I cannot type with it -- Write won't show input from
the OSK, home view search box won't show input from OSK.

The touchscreen scale_{x,y} defaults are killing me. They make the UI
_very_ awkward to use -- I average 2.5 touches before I can hit a
moderately large button ("next", or the "stop" icon). This is because
the offset the driver applies shifts in every spot of the screen, it's
a devilish thing.

Paul, can we crank those defaults way down? Or add a dampening / ramp
up effect to the offset that is flat in most of the screen, but
quickly ramps up near edges? (If you don't believe me, install OS5 and
use Sugar with the touchscreen for a while).

thanks!

Shouldn't happen. One possibility is that some XO-1's weren't as robust as
they
should have, and many SD cards push the standard. Try another card if
possible,
or run some data tests of the SD card to test this.

Hello!
We have one XO 1.5 that have that problem. We used it for our Butiá project.
When plug an arduino board into the usb, the XO rebootsinstantanly. Now, with
our PIC18F.. that it speak directly USB works perfectly!
The question: the problem is the usb conversion of the arduino board? Some
devices speak serial, no usb direclty..

So when i plug one usb device into the xo be it an ipod or a cell phone while
running on battery the screen goes white and the laptop reboots. It works fine
when plugged in charging though. I just wanted to let you all know what im
experiencing. I believe the devices are drawing too much current from the
laptop and forcing a reboot. It doesnt matter which usb port i plug it into.

Thanks

I experienced this a couple of years ago in SF when doing my myriad of
gadget tests, Hence, the reason I bought my powered USB hub is that I
(more than once) plugged in an external USB powered USB mini CD drive and
the 1.5 screen went slowly all weird then white. If I remember, I was
informed that anything that draws more than 500mA kinda breaks USB rules-
and that would include iPhones and iPads. Using a double dongle tries to
kluge it on PC's, but this doesn't have any better effect on the 1.5 -
something to do with power flowing downhill. I think I was also told that
it doesn't happen on the XO 1 because of the presence of some diode or
sumpin that keeps the USB device from draining out too fast.

Since I now (like Mikus) use powered hubs for anything that needs more than
500mA of power, I have forgotten the exact explanation.

I believe it was Richard who explained it to me, and basically told me to
cease and desist at the risk of doing damage to the 1.5. Perhaps he can
chime in again on this.

Cheers,

KG

Re: Xo1.5 crashes

2012-10-07 Thread Mikus Grinbergs

Since I don't own a cell phone, I've never tried charging from an XO.

My external USB storage devices are all self-powered; and my other USB
devices (adapters, microscopes, keyboards, etc.) are all low-power
devices. In about four years of using XO-1.5s, I haven't ever had the
XO-1.5 crash when I dynamically plugged any USB device in.

SD Card bug? XO 1.75 (Repeat post)

2012-10-07 Thread RJV
Bug?

A SD card, with a .Rpm file, crashes the XO whereas any external device
should only be used as a booting device if there is a boot image in it or
is this an assumption in XO?

I re-flashed the XO but the Linux installation needs to be re-done.
Thoughts or any past experiences, anyone, on this?

Sandisk extreme 32GB and 16GB dont initialize in XO-1.75

2012-10-07 Thread George Hunt
Hi all,

I've been working on a XO-1.75 as XS project. The smallest form factor XS
would use an SD card for School Server storage. So I purchased fast, large
SD cards from Amazon. These cards work in my mac, and they initialize, and
appear to work on the XO-1.5 running build 860.

The XO-1.75 software is build 21 (12.1.0), firmware is Q4D17.

The error message in the /var/log/messages is:
Oct 7 11:18:44 schoolserver kernel: [157819.81] sdhci: Switching to
1.8V signalling voltage failed, retrying with S18R set to 0
Oct 7 11:18:44 schoolserver kernel: [157819.876896] mmc0: error -110
whilst initialising SD card

In my reading about SD cards, I discover that some SD cards are not
genuine. I have looked at /sys/... and the manufacturing number was "003"
which is appropriate for sandisk.

This error message is mentioned in
Ticket #11736

I'd be happy to give more info, or do testing.
