KQED: In Oakland, Mixed Results for Tech In Schools
There is no mention of OLPC or Sugar, but I think it's good background info as well as a good news story. http://www.californiareport.org/archive/R201311011630/b The audio is 6 minutes. For those of you not familiar with Oakland, they have lots of troubles, close to Detroit, and the schools have their share of the problems. They talked to two schools. One thumbs up. One thumbs down due to WiFi overload. (That wasn't the only problem, but it was fatal.) The link at the bottom to more/full-story is good too. It looks like a transcript, but it's not accurate. The first half is close but the second half diverges a lot. There are lots of links. Time sink warning if you follow a good one. The Mind/Shift blog has lots of good stuff. "Blended learning" seems to be a buzzword. Anybody know anything about the Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation? http://www.christenseninstitute.org/honoring-clayton-christensen-with-new-name -emboldened-mission/ He teaches at Harvard Business School. His book, The Innovator's Dilemma, is famous in the high-tech world. (It's very good. I haven't read any of his other books.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_Christensen -- These are my opinions. Flavio, Would be good have concrete proposals about what you think can be improved, to be discussed point by point. About a easier implementation of collaboration, we discussed a proposal, and I think Agustin started a implementation. Re: can wiki.laptop.org not do sortable tables?
I've checked. For Releases, the Semantic Wiki plugin emits HTML with a call to SMW_sortable.js, and the table has a class of smwtable which implements the sort. For other tables, the click on the sort button is causing a JavaScript console error: ReferenceError: ts_sort_caseinsensitive is not defined Indeed, there is no such function. Perhaps FGrose removed it? I see this in the JavaScript Debugger for wiki.laptop.org index.php line 1005: /** Collapsible tables * 10Nov2009 [[User:FGrose]] Deleted this second copy of the code that was causing two [hide]/[show] buttons to appear in the table header. */ -- James Cameron http://quozl.linux.org.au/ ___ Devel mailing list Devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/devel

p.s. it is good that you are being transparent with your decisions, because that gives you a chance to have them publically reviewed. ;-) On Fri, Nov 01, 2013 at 12:04:11PM -0500, David Farning wrote: > Thanks for the update. To not participate in the design process is entirely your decision, but, if you'll accept my advice, your reasoning for the decision is flawed! Credibility is not what you think it is. For technical design and feature specification in the Sugar Labs community, organisational credibility is not required. It is the technical input that is valuable. Sugar Labs has received valuable input from a range of credibilities, including bright young children, teachers of children, and crusty old engineers like me. And if you do think organisational credibility is required, that begs the question of why ... is it that you expect your technical input to be swayed by your credibility? Surely not. Don't hold the community to ransom for your technical input, just give it, give it early, and give it often. > Let's give it 2-3 months for AC's R&D team learning how to work > effectively with the HTML5+JS team at SL. The "sort" buttons on the top of each column don't work here: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Community_Edition/Features Nor do stock examples like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Table/Sortable_tables Any idea why? http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Releases is inspiring but doesn't provide any immediate answers :} -- Unsung Heroes of OLPC, interviewed live @ http://unleashkids.org ! ___ Devel mailing list Devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/devel
Re: [Sugar-devel] Private vs Public conversations.
Thanks for the update. Currently, AC does not have the credibility to participate in the design process. Let's give it 2-3 months for AC's R&D team learning how to work effectively with the HTML5+JS team at SL. In the first couple of weeks, I expect that this will mostly involve creating web activities to build familiarity the the technologies and API's. The return value to Sugar Labs will be testing and feedback about the current web activities framework. No such thing as XO 1.0, but there's an XO-1. ;-) OLPC is not currently producing new public builds for XO laptop, the latest build is 13.2.0-13. I'm not aware of a Sugar 0.100 test image for XO-1, but sugar-devel@ would be the best place to ask, as testing has been discussed quite a bit there.
