Google Glass on Android on XO-4...for fun
I successfully tried out the early a4g (Android for Giulia?) build of Android Jelly bean for XO-4 as announced here: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Android After encouraging posts by Anna, Sameer and Christoph, I flashed the 4GB image on an Unleash Kids XO-4 SKU306 SHC31100316. The wifi connected immediately to my home router. The Google Play Store was working after I set up my account in Settings, so I was able to download a few apps to try. Though the trackpad is not implemented yet, I was able to navigate using the touchscreen. The screen redraw is indeed slow, but usable. I was able to play through the internal speakers some MP3s from Google Play Music and I also discovered that the microphone is working. For fun, I installed the Google Glass XE5 launcher and associated apps from here: http://pathofacoder.com/2013/07/19/installing-google-glass-in-an-android-phone/ The necessary files were unpacked on my MacBook and moved over on a USB stick and installed with ES File Explorer. Since Bluetooth is not enabled yet, I wasn't able to pair the Google Glass apps with my Google account, but I was able to get around some of the user interface. Recent versions of the Google Glass software have removed the bluetooth requirement, but I haven't found a more recent installable system dump than the above. When Bluetooth is running, I should be able to pair the MyGlass companion app on the XO-4 with my real set of Glasses and screencast into the XO. OK Butiá, draw me the phase of the Moon! Here are photos and videos of my tests: http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiouslee/sets/72157639278723275/ http://youtu.be/i0fyv95znv8 Seeing Google Now's voice control and card-like interface made me think about the possibilities of the XO-4 and XO Tablet experience offering the ability to augment face-to-face group interactions rather than being a 1-to-1 device engagement with a launcher plastered on top for app navigation. The recent release of the GDK makes immersive on-board apps that don't need internet possible in Glass. It should be an exciting 2014 indeed when the full dual boot package with Android and Sugar/Gnome is ready. Happy New Year! Re: [Sugar-devel] Sugar on a $100 tablet!
I also have a Gen 1 Nexus 7 and would like to try this if it can be done from Mac or Win OS. I'd be particularly interested in the usability of of the basic features of Etoys 5 and Scratch 1.4. I would imagine TurtleBlocks works well. With the procedure characterized as tricky, I may fast follow George on this. At this point, it's only for hackers. But it just might help us achieve the $100 Sugar machine. Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2151092. This sounds like fun, but maybe not that useful for real deployments as it probably works quite slowly. I'm inclined to play with the nexus, because there's so much information available on how to add software. Then later I can try it with a $100 machine. Good news is that I already have Sugar 0.98 running natively (no android underneath) on my Nexus 7 on top of Ubuntu. http://imgur.com/WMgm3oB As a byproduct of packaging 0.98 in deb form -which is something I'm working on this days-, and since I have a Nexus, I compiled the debs for armhf to play a little bit with them. There are some bugs but it worked overall in a very promising way: most things work, including frame gestures, maliit, journal, activities and collaboration. It is also quite fast. If somebody has a nexus and wants to give it a try I can publish the debs and a brief howto during the weekend. It is a bit tricky, though. Re: So long and thanks for all the fish.
Richard, If there is an award for most electrons saved while delivering learning to children globally, you should get it. Your dedication to hyper-efficient power consumption in the XO continues to effect a significant differentiator in the product. But more than product focus, I benefited often from your unwavering attitude of no-request-is-too-small. Most recently, helping me to work through testing of the new power plug adapter in Zambia. And over the years, so many patient and detailed replies to my questions on solar panels. I suspect we'll cross paths again next I'm in Boston, or if Bobo gets enough attention to arrange a meeting with my employer. So I'm not saying goodbye. I want to say that I hope the community continues to come up with interesting questions and projects at attract your interest! Mike On Wed, Jun 19, 2013 at 11:15 AM, Richard A. Re: 13.1.0 development build 19 released
I was able to successfully update, but I saw the same error along the way. I downloaded the .zd image from the link provided onto a Macbook Pro. Then I copied it to a SanDisk USB drive. I took a photo of the error message at the moment the firmware was updating. The XO-4 B1 rebooted into the Sugar welcome screens right after. http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiouslee/8278050167/in/photostream Mike On Sun, Dec 16, 2012 at 3:58 PM, Gary Martin garycmar...@googlemail.comwrote: Hi Daniel, On 16 Dec 2012, at 20:49, Anna ascho...@gmail.com wrote: I verified the md5sum and tried a couple of different USB drives, but after it finishes writing 31019o4.zd, the XO4 throws this out: Blocks/square: 2 Total blocks: 15911 0 36 34 WARNING: The file said highest block 15911 but wrote only as high as block 15903 Same here, I've tried to download it twice and flash 31019o4.zd on to two different XO-4 each time with the same error. Here's a cool demo of the Neonode multitouch frame: http://www.slashgear.com/neonode-3d-touch-headed-to-tablets-and-phones-hands-on-28215933/ Not only multi-touch, but also entry direction and tilt. Re: [support-gang] XoPhoto needs a few intrepid testing volunteers.
Hi George, I'm really excited about the release of this version of XoPhoto. The timing is really great because I have been meeting with a local (to Washington, D.C.) nature photographer who is adept at getting grants to deliver digital photography experiences to at-risk youths. I will be setting up another meeting with her to demo the activity. We still have around 20 XO-1 laptops in our lending library that would be great to use in an outdoor photo exercise with kids.
