Re: Any restrictions or recommendations regarding SD cards?
Hi Christoph: Then is not so much a matter of I/O, at least not in the terms that we think of it. We're more incline to think how fast a file can be copied from the NAND to the external device, but that only happens when you're copying several files at once. We're programmers, geeks. Perhaps it does matter the first time, when the index is created. But thinking of the normal uses of a SD card, it would be hypothetically always inserted to the laptop, and yet the kids are manually going to transfer files, and that is as fast as our hands make it. "Righ click, select option, transafer, done". Not a fast as the device can go. I must admit that I'm not very current with OLPC knowledge, I've been disconnected . But files cannot be trasfered in batches And what would be the real case scenario for it, to free disk space, then is not a matter of "how fast" but of "how much". The other case scenario would be to share files, in which case it doesn't matter that much either. If the OS is not running from the SD, I wouldn't worry that much about a certain brand or speed. I could be more concerned about long term usage, quality, lets call it life-span (http://goo.gl/yt6cE). Now if you know that certain SD card cannot work as external drives, because of a bug or something, then, you should not use those, but i have a very old microSD card for about 3 years and works just fine to make backups, or to transfer files to other machines. I even have soas in it, and use it every once in while. Sometimes we just get lucky. You should try different types and brands, as long as they all have the same size, cause, in this cases, size does matter. This way if there is statistics that proves one brand not working is minimal compared to the whole batch of a bad brand. I hope that makes sense.. :) R 2011/3/24 Christoph Derndorfer > Hi Rodolfo, > > I think the idea is to use it as a storage device. > > Christoph > > > On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 12:56 AM, Rodolfo D. Re: problems with an XO
Hello: Machine SKU26, Serial: SHF8220176E Model XO-1 I can't say it stoped in the middle of the upgrade, it failed after everything finished.. it was like this.. i got the q2e41.rom file in a sd card, i ran the command ok flash sd:\q2e41.rom checking.. writing.. checking.. and than something else.. and apparently finished.. cuase i didn't came back until about 15 min later.. (i went to the grocery store.. haha).. and when i came back.. the screen showed: Checking Writing Error, SPI Flash ID 0 ok <- this is the prompt.. But i was not allowed to write anymore.. nor to reboot or anything.. y unplugged the AC power, but the led remained on.. that's where i figured it REALLY failed, 'cause if it failed in one of the testings or such, during firmware installation if it fails it still maintains the old firmware, and the prompt works.. but that didn't happen in this occasion I tryed to reboot with the prompt, didn't work, I tryed to turn off using power button, didn't work, y disconected power (again), didn't work.. so I removed the battery.. and it powered off.. when i turned on.. nothing.. black screen of Firmware death (bricked).. but it didn't happen during upgrade.. it happened when upgrade aparently finished cheers.. Re: "giving kids a platform to create their future"
I'm not sure what you're saying is completely accurate.. I've seen versions of sugar (i just can't remember which version) that has in the activities option (run, erase, etc) has the "modify" option which allows you to modify the source code. I'll have to admit that none of those things are available in the stable branch so far, but they will Regarding the journal and file system, well, the logics of "date" and "type" are a lot easier to understand than the filesystem structure, for a kid.. at least for my 5-years-old son. I think you should look at it this way.. the XO primrly designed for a kids between 6 to 12.. from 12 years to a work-type envoiroment, i think there are a couple of grades in between.. in which we (developers) can certainly put a different OS in the XO, to suit their need I must admit that some issues really bug me about sugar.. but perhaps insted of placing the sugar in my context, i should put mi mind in the sugar context, like my kid does. Sometimes we try to make everything look more like the things that we know, but sometimes, reordering, although slow at the beggining, it could lead to more efficiente work, like the KDE4 project for example By the way.. i use gnome.. hehehe :-) cheers..
