New release of F11 for the XO-1 is available for testing - OS13

2010-03-27 Thread Steven M. Parrish
OS13 is now available for testing.

It is available for download at http://people.sugarlabs.org/~smparrish

Installation instructions are here
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/F11_for_XO-1#Installation_instructions

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to test these releases. We
are getting close to an Final and Official release, and without your help
would not have made it to this point.

Re: Root filesystem ran out of room in F11-on-XO1

2010-02-27 Thread Steven M. Parrish
On Wednesday 24 February 2010 07:13:22 pm Mikus Grinbergs wrote:
Disclaimer: I am not asking for help; I am sharing my experience.

Was running a large 'yum' update to an XO1 with os11 installed -- it
failed, because 'yum' ran out of room in the '/' filesystem. I looked,
and it turned out that before this 'yum' run started, /dev/mtdblock0 had
been nearly 90% used. [For conveniences sake, because '/' is 1GB,
 I'll say 10% of '/' is about 100MB (that disregards jffs2 packing).]

 For comparison, I have a not-used-for-testing XO1 with os10 installed --
its '/' filesystem shows used a bit over 50%. The near 40% difference
in how much was used between the two systems comes out to over 400MB.
[ os11.zd did come with more facilities installed than did os10.zd ]

The amount of software I had added myself was approximately equal for
those os11 and os10 systems. Let us assume that I had filled some 100MB
of the os11 system's space with leftovers from my testing. That still
leaves the os11 system with 300MB plus of occupancy to be accounted
for. My suspicion is that the major part of this difference in '/'
filesystem used is attributable to directory /versions in os11.

If my suspicion is correct, then the ease of use of olpc-update (which
depends upon /versions) needs to be balanced against the potential for
shock if the XO-1 user runs out of room in the XO1 that much sooner.

 mikus

 p.s.

A partial printout from 'du' on the two systems:
  Directory os11os10

  /bin64756474
  /etc 39513 39455
  /lib 36428 28144
  /tmp 0 0
  /var 35012 36009
  /boot 93199308
  /home 122330 44500
  /sbin 12722 12714
  /security140 140
  /bootpart 0 0
  /usr 964111 868882
  /versions 925311

I have no idea why /usr came out so big - I had told 'du' not to follow
symbolic links. [Note that the numbers for /usr alone are in the
vicinity of the size of the whole /dev/mtdblock0 device -- does jffs2
 packing account for this ?]

Also, /versions has lots of cross-links, which 'du' might have counted
as though they were separate files.

This is something I noticed when creating OS11. The resulting build was much
larger however I attributed it to the new build system and inclusion of
additional apps. I have just started working on OS12 and will do some digging
to get the size back down.

Is there any reason for cutting release after release that don't work

Surely if you can't fix the bugs, you could at least ship the release
with power management disabled by default, so it works out of the box.
Or, one step up from that, have it figure out which hardware it can
reliably suspend on, and only have it enable suspend by default on
 that hardware.

Sorry it took a bit of time to respond but I've been on vacation and now am
recovering from the flu.

I released OS11 as a 1st build with the new buildsystem. There are still some
issues which need to be addressed but I wanted to get a new build with updated
kernel etc out for testing.

I did some local testing with powe rmanagement disabled by default and the
issue persisted. It only went away when I went into the control panel and
manually enabled and then disabled power management.

I truly wish I had the hours to devote to tracking down and fixing all these
issues, however the $DAYJOB along with commute time keeps me away from home
for 13 hours a day, and the $DAYJOB is not in the industry, where I could work
on this on the side, but it does pay the bills.

It is my hope to get the remaining issues addressed in short order so a final
release can be made. We do have a time constraint since F11 the base of our
releases will go End of Life in June.

I appreciate all the testing you and others are doing and would welcome any
assistance in tracking down and exterminating these final few issues.

Some testing notes for OS10 for the XO-1

2009-12-11 Thread Steven M. Parrish
If you are going to try out OS10 for the XO-1 here are a few things that need
testing.

Does it boot consistently into Sugar? Gnome?

Any strange lockups? If so what were you doing?

Can you upgrade packages using yum update from the command line?

Does sound work?

Can you suspend? Does it wake up?

Please report any issues you have.

Re: My view of OS7 on XO-1

2009-09-30 Thread Steven M. Parrish
It now connects to my home AP without manual intervention, and quickly too.
 Yea! Thanks.

I haven't figured out how to setup a mesh network. I've got two circles on
the frame. One is a copy of the icon for my AP in the neighborhood view.
The other one is gray and the text says Create new wireless network.
Poking it doesn't do anything that I can see.

I had a power failure this afternoon. That gave me a pop-up asking for the
password to my AP. The AP was dead. It already knows the password to my
  AP.

At one point, I had 4 strange AP icons on the neighborhood view, all the
same color, all said olpc-mesh. They may have been created while I was
poking around after my AP got killed by the power failure. After a while,
they went away when I wasn't watching.

Turning off the Automatic Power Managment check-box in the control panel
 doesn't work.
I can uncheck the box, but after poking OK and opening it up
again, it comes back checked again.

After a while, an idle system goes into a funny power saving mode. The
radio LED is off and pings are ignored. If I poke a key, the CPU active
LED (right of the battery LED) blinks
but the system doesn't wake up. Poking the power button gets me back to
the system. An occasional ping (75 seconds) avoids this.

If the display has been dimmed, poking the LED-brighter key (F10) turns the
display on, but it comes up all white. Poking a letter key or moving the
 cursor
 shows the picture.

Mesh is not currently available, should be in the next release.

These builds now use powerd for power management. What you described is
normal for when the system sleeps. To wake it up just press the power button.

haven't seen the whiteness issue you described but I'll look into it.

Thanks for testing and the report.

when left idle. Can anyone else report if this is happening. I dont have

I have released a new build of F11 for the XO-1 named

  OS4

You can find it at http://dev.laptop.org/~smparrish/xo-1/builds/

This new build includes the addition of the

  ImageViewer, Physics and Jukebox

Activities, an update to the Write Activity, and the

  kbdshim and powerd

   packages.

It also fixes the bug where the XO would shutdown when you
  go online.

It does not fix the style.py font size for the Journal and home (I guess a
proper solution is explored) Olpc-powerd works up to sleeping but fails to
blank and shutdown.OK on lid and power button suspend/shutdown though.
rtcwake still does not work, so I guess this must be the reason.
olpc-powerd also conflicts with the GNOME power management. Gnome options
must be set to do nothing in order for powerd to work properly. The build
is still missing ntp and ntpdate (also wget)
Firefox is still too big for the screen but installing the default zoom
plugin and setting it to 67% improves things a lot The 3 breakers (battery
monitor, screen rotation and camera) are still with us. One bug at a time
 is good though :)
 Thanks

  thanks for your efforts!

Another F11 build for the XO-1 has been released

2009-08-05 Thread Steven M. Parrish
I have released a new build of F11 for the XO-1 named OS4

You can find it at http://dev.laptop.org/~smparrish/xo-1/builds/

This new build includes the addition of the ImageViewer, Physics and Jukebox
Activities, an update to the Write Activity, and the kbdshim and powerd
packages.

I have also included the md5sum for the .img and .iso

Keep in mind this is a full OS image and installing it will result in the loss
of all data on your XO-1.

The usual cautions apply: this is development code, there will be
bugs. Installation instructions: use copy-nand to install os4.img with
os4.crc.

New F11-for-XO1 build is available and needs testing

2009-07-31 Thread Steven M. Parrish
I have taken over creating builds for the XO1 from Daniel, and have created a
new build of F11 for the XO1. This build OS3 includes the pretty boot
animations, and also replaces olpcsound with csound.

I would apprectiate testing and feedback. I will have another build out early
next week as well.

Builds can be downloaded from http://dev.laptop.org/~smparrish/xo-1/builds/

The usual cautions apply: this is development code, there will be
bugs. Installation instructions: use copy-nand to install os3.img with
os3.crc.

Need some space

2009-07-25 Thread Steven M. Parrish
Hi all,

I've been in discussions with Daniel Drake about taking over the builds for
F11/Sugar for the XO-1. I will be working to backport the work done in the
XO-1.5 branch to the XO-1. Due to space limitations on my FedoraPeople
account I need some place to host the images. Can I get an account at
laptop.org to host these?
