2013-10-31 Thread John Watlington

Since I finally mentioned that OLPC and I had parted ways in an earlier
email, I really need to thank the OLPC community for providing me
with the opportunity to work with you for the past seven years.

Reuben continues to provide outstanding deployment support for all XO laptops,
and I will still be available online for questions and deep support issues.

Cheers,

Richard,

If there is an award for most electrons saved while delivering learning to
children globally, you should get it. Your dedication to hyper-efficient
power consumption in the XO continues to effect a significant
differentiator in the product.

But more than product focus, I benefited often from your unwavering
attitude of no-request-is-too-small. Most recently, helping me to work
through testing of the new power plug adapter in Zambia. And over the
years, so many patient and detailed replies to my questions on solar panels.

I suspect we'll cross paths again next I'm in Boston, or if Bobo gets
enough attention to arrange a meeting with my employer.

So I'm not saying goodbye. I want to say that I hope the community
continues to come up with interesting questions and projects at attract
your interest!

So long and thanks for all the fish.

2013-06-19 Thread Richard A. Smith
This is my public announcement that I'm leaving OLPC. I have accepted a
new position at Bobo Analytics. My last day with OLPC is the 21st.

At Bobo I'll be working along side with Ed McNierney and Mitch Bradly so
it won't feel too far away from OLPC.

The last 6.5 years have been an amazing journey. There really aren't
the words to express it. I'm extremely honored to have had the chance
to work at OLPC and been able to work with some of the most amazing
people I've ever met. I'm proud of what OLPC, its associates and
volunteers have been able to accomplish and I'll always carry fond
memories of my contributions to the project.

I'll continue to lurk on IRC and you can still reach me by my
rich...@laptop.org address. If that stops at some point then
smithb...@gmail.com will be around as long as google keeps it.

Take care everyone.
Richard.

Ajay,

You're story reminds me of another told by a character on an American
television drama called "West Wing":

"This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The
walls are so steep he can't get out.
A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help
me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole
and moves on.
Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down
in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer,
throws it down in the hole and moves on
Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?'
And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now
we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here
before and I know the way out.'"

Anish sounds like that sort of friend that will jump down into that
hole and lead you out, which is a good friend indeed.

We seldom take enough time to acknowledge the mutual support we
provide to each other as a community, I'm glad Ajay has taken the time
to tell his story.

Anish,

It has been a great pleasure to work with you on improving the
i18n/L10n of Dextrose, and I know your studies will command all of
your attention; however, I will not say "good bye", but only "au
revoir" and best of luck in your new endeavour.

Thanks Buddy !!!

2012-08-16 Thread Ajay Garg
I would like to take this opportunity, in front of all the members of our
small family ( well.. ok, not so small a family :P ), to thank the person,
who has been responsible for my rejuvenation, and is the reason for my
today's well-being state. He is, of course, Anish.

A year back, Anish was the one who picked me up when I was completely,
morally and mentally devastated. He said just one thing :: "Ajay, please
come back on track. I know your abilities". That was the thing that gave me
the kick; and today, here I am -- lucky to be coding for inevitable, core
requirements; and fully enjoying my work here at AC.

I would also like to thank you all, for providing me the support, and
(specifically AC) treating me so well.

But as I say, the lion's share of my thanks, has to go to Anish :)

Today, as Anish goes away to pursure his Masters, I recall all those fun
moments we had in college, and thereafter.
Lately, our weekly meet-up at our "office" at a Cafe Coffee Day outlet in
Delhi, had become a topic of fun and laughter amongst ourselves, and
friends :D
I will surely miss those "weekly" fun moments ... !!!

Thanks Anish for everything ...
Congratulations again for another feather in the cap ...
And lastly - the most important thing - have fun :D :D :D

New F14-arm build os42 - So long and Thanks for all the Fish

2011-09-04 Thread Peter Robinson
The So long and Thanks for all the Fish release

This release should be fairly complete for Activity developers and
testers. All the remaining core libraries are now in place, in most
case now there's only minor revisions between ARM and x86 and that gap
is closing fairly fast. With most of the remaining bits now in place
the next release will be based on a merged 11.3 in alignment with x86.

Folks,

I'm psyched to be (re)joining the community as a volunteer once more -
after all, I've been an employee for 3.8 months and a community member
for... running over 2 years now. This isn't an ending, just another step
- and I for one welcome our new overlor^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H I mean, I'm
looking forward to it.

I'll continue to manage 8.2.1 testing as a volunteer, among other things
- see the scoop on how QA is moving forward as an all-community entity
at http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Community_testing_meetings/2009-01-08. I
may make an appearance around Australia (http://linux.conf.au/) and
Oceania in general (hello, Welly testers!) and... oh, maybe other
places. It's a big world out there.

Now - I've got a bunch of embedded/signal
processing/sociology/engineering-education books that have been calling
my name for ages... and a piano that I have ignored for years. (Ideas on
other fun things to do next are welcomed!) Thank you for all your help,
support, teaching, ideas, tolerance, enthusiasm, critiques, inspiration
and just plain ol' companionship along this crazy ride. It's been good -
and will continue to be good. Sweet.

Cheers, then - I'll be seeing you folks around.

Small correction: "blocks?:8.2.0", rather than "blocks:?8.2.0".

Thanks for the Joyride test results

2008-08-07 Thread Greg Smith
Hi All,

Thanks a lot for the great response to the request for test results on 2230.

Its super heartening to have so many smart people on the team; ready,
willing and able to test these images!

As Michael said recently, we're going to nominate another for mass
testing as soon as it gets through smoke test.

Michael and I are doing regular triage meetings with the component teams
(e.g. sugar a few weeks ago, collabora this week, power, and others
next). We've also started a daily bug triage meeting in the office with
Kim, Jim, Michael and me.

The goal of both is to name show stoppers and focus on those first.
However, the current rate of triage will not get us through the full
backlog in time. Michael also reads the bugs as they come in but he
doesn't touch every one.

If you think a bug should be considered a release stopper, please put
"blocks:?8.2.0" in the keyword field.

I will read those every weekday. I either:
- leave them alone if the fix is already going in
- or ask questions to get more detail
- or set to blocks:8.2.0 to signify its a release blocker
- or set to blocks:-8.2.0 to say its not a release blocker

The conventions are documented at:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Trac_conventions

The query I will use to watch for blocks:?8.2.0 is
http://dev.laptop.org/query?status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&order=priority&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=type&col=priority&col=milestone&col=component&keywords=~blocks%3F%3A8.2

Many things aren't release blockers but should be worked on and should
be fixed. Use the priority field to help find those and don't be shy
about setting it to "blocker". Hopefully everyone will fix as many of
those as possible.

We are hard pressed to keep up with incoming data, but we're working
overtime to try. Every data point makes for a better release so please
keep it coming, in Trac (preferred) or on list. Feel free to ping me or
the list for status if you're waiting on something.

This is my first open source project. According to Eric S. Raymond its
the power of parallelized testing by engineers that beats closed source
and the Mythical Man Month. I'm thrilled to see it in action!

Thanks,

Greg S

Re: [OLPC-GSoC] [sugar] Summer of Code update : applications so far, and thanks

2008-04-06 Thread Bobby Powers
Thanks Homunq (Jameson?) especially for the GSOC category maintenance.

I think I am in the same boat as you - I've gotten some feedback already but
would like to be included on the list for some more especially since I've
rewritten most of it in the past few days to focus more on development of an
activity. In a nutshell I want to bring System Dynamics (SD) to the XO and
classrooms. SD is an ideal way to implement a lot of constructionist ideas,
it gives kids an environment where they can can address real world problems
and face the challenge of learning what they need to know to accomplish the
task. This all happens in an approach grounded in systems theory. The full
app is here:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OpenSim

if anyone has any more comments (either positive, negative or on the
specifics) I'd love to hear them, even as the deadline is looming.

Thanks!
yours,
Bobby

2 points:
1. A lot of these are not on the wiki, or were not in the [[Category:GSoC
proposals]]. I've rectified that for the ones I could find, but I'd really
like to read some that I couldn't find. I understand that some people may
not have found all the different places for communication - the GSoC
website, this list, the wiki, IRC, the other mailing lists, trac it is a
lot to keep track of. So it would be great if mentors could use the GSoC
website to suggest to students that putting an application on the wiki will
get more feedback.

2. My app has gotten more feedback
than most, so I understand why I'm not on this list, but I still feel left
out. My idea is to modify Develop let you program in a Python based on your
own language, but keep it as English-based python on disk - it takes maybe a
few more words to describe than most applications because nothing like it
really exists anywhere else. And yet most of the feedback I've gotten has to
do more with technical or logistical points, not the basic question of
whether this new idea is worth doing. For those of you whose first language
is not English - do you think it would help people learn to program if the
keywords and basic modules were readable in your own language? (Don't just
think about your own case, think about your average potential programmer -
would it help?) If you have an answer, add it to the talk
page- of course I'd love
any yesses, but if I get a couple of no's there's still
(barely) time for me to submit another Develop-related application.

This is where I'd put my proposal, "Bityi - on-screen code i18n in XO

Summer of Code update : applications so far, and thanks

2008-04-05 Thread Samuel Klein
Thank you to all who have helped out with our Summer of Code process so
far. We now have 30 mentors from the community, and 150 applications from
30 countries. Students have put a good deal of thought into these
applications, and I hope that most of them can lead to community discussion
even if they aren't accepted as official summer projects. The applications
that stand out are from developers all over the world, with both programming
and pedagogical experience.

Applicants -- please take advantage of the longer application time this year
to update your proposals based on feedback you have gotten from the
community (you have been soliciting feedback, haven't you?) You can enhance
your applications by adding thoughts from your applications to related pages
on the OLPC wiki. And don't forget to review any feedback you have gotten
through the gsoc site itself.

Mentors -- please take an hour this weekend to review and adopt
applications. If you don't adopt any applications, you won't be able to
mentor for us.

Everyone -- if you've been meaning to send in that brilliant application but
have been busy organizing tibetan protests or monitoring the zimbabwe
elections, this is your last chance -- the final deadline is Monday.

Finally, to stimulate discussion, below are a few applications that deserve
more feedback and mentor attention.

= Good applications that need review by a mentor with topic-specific
expertise =

* An XO Eclipse environment - Phan quoc huy
* Handwriting recognition - Juliana Lipková (Thomas Breuel, call your
office)
* "your voice on XO" - Alex Escalona, on community-wide building of new
Festival voices for TTS

= Projects attracting more than one good application =
(e.g., where there are detailed comparisons to be made)

* Typing tutor - at least three good proposals
* Flashcards - at least two good proposals
* [[Elements]] extension - at least two good proposals
* Artificial neural network simulations - at least one good proposal
* A light email client - a few proposals that need clarification
* Blogging platforms -   "  "  "
* Finance activities  -  [[Finance One]], &c

= Other applications of note =

== Core system components ==
* The publish/share button - Robson Mendonça, Eric Burns
* Server interface design - Michał Ściubidło and others
* LustreFS for XO (Distributed mesh filesystem) - Evelina Stepanova
* Memory/disk tuning (schoolserver) - Waseem Shaukat

 == Fundamental activities ==
* [[Listen and Spell]] - Assim Deodia
* Homework manager - Jason Tran
* [[VideoEdit]] - Roberto Fagá
* [[Coding Tutor]] - Rahul Bagaria

== Learning games ==
* Incredible machine - Alex Levenson, with a prototype
* [[PlayGo]] extensions - Brandon Wilson
* Water Game - Lin Zhou, for learning water sanitation and safety
* Garden Game - Javier Trejo, for learning genetics; developing in both en
and es.
