[sabayon-dev] OpenSSL falls short: Heartbleed bug (CVE 2014-0160)

2014-04-08 Thread Andre Jaenisch
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

I'd like to ask our server team to bump OpenSSL package and pass the
information forward to Gentoo.

You probably have already read about it, but I'd like to gather some
links for further information:

About the bug: http://heartbleed.com/
How to test it: http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/ (OpenSource, see the
GitHub link, sabayon.org is positive ?)
TOR article: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/openssl-bug-cve-2014-0160

Please also ship it to the users before the regularly deployment and
write a blog post/broadcast mail to inform them (maybe on the
blackboard, too?).

Regards,

André Jaenisch

[sabayon-dev] OpenSuSE forums hacked - time to move to OpenSource solution?

2014-01-17 Thread Andre Jaenisch
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

you probably have already read about it:
http://www.muktware.com/2014/01/opensuse-forums-hijacked-emails-leaked/18950

As far as I remember, Sabayon is using a non-open solution, too ?
Is it prudent, to look for an open source alternative for us, too?

Maybe, we can work together with the OpenSuSE community to create one,
if there's none, yet.

I know for sure, that the guys at ubuntuusers.de have a self-made Django
project, which code isn't open source (yet).

I'd like to have a cleaner solution for our website ? one, which
incorporates easy access/display for the package store, the bugtracker
and the wiki, too ?

Let's discuss it :)

Re: [sabayon-dev] Rolling with monthly images

2013-04-10 Thread Andre Jaenisch
Hm, I think I've got it.
Well, the code is still ugly but should work.
I recommend to test the file and replace only if working.
Since it is not deployed via git I cannot provide a patch.

What I added is a simply filtering and then duplicate of the table section.
Hereby I assume, that all monthly are of the pattern
Sabayon_Linux_YY.MM_arch_DE.iso or Sabayon_Linux_DE_YY.MM_arch.iso so
it should pick up the right isos.
Also I inserted an extra headline level for easier understanding.

In the long run a better file should be used.

 # equo install net-p2p/bittorrent
 code: /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/BitTorrent/tracker.py

I had a glance over the code today …
Very unpythonish imho. Looks more like C++.
However, the license link is broken.
I've asked BitTorrent Inc. on Twitter, whether changes/modifications
are allowed. I guess, I'll write a mail as well.

What are our requirements to this software?
micia told me, minimalism + pulling the torrents files from a
directory and suggested deluge ( http://deluge-torrent.org/ ).

Don't get me wrong, I can hack the code (if allowed) to suit our needs
(by searching via RegEx for 13.04-files (resp. the more abstract
pattern). But I dislike hardcoding …

The license is available on FSF:

Would it be possible, or desirable, to have the release and monthly torrents
on different pages? Or maybe have different tabs on the page to separate
monthlies from the regular releases? Just to tidy things up and make it look
a little more organized and simpler.

Two different headers for two two tables could do it, too …
And this can also be generated automatically ;-)

should have a closer look to the drupal branch on git … to include it
in Drupal (with header and such).

between the lines, that the package is available only on portage at
the moment … I think, you will be well advised to point this fact, too
on the forums …

Re: [sabayon-dev] Call for testers: Sabayon 11 Artwork

2013-01-13 Thread Andre Jaenisch
Hello,

one more thing …
Maybe you illustrator guys can play on words with XI (= Roman eleven).
It looks like the Greek character xi [1]. Another thing, I can think
of, is a pun on non-free systems like windows. Something like …
eXIt your jail. Use (Sabayon) Linux. with reference to Open your
source. Open your mind. [2]
But I am not sure, how this will take effect in parts of the world,
where the mind isn't that free …

My 2 cents :)

[sabayon-dev] Usage of SQLite in Entropy

2012-10-22 Thread Andre Jaenisch
Hello, dear list members :)
I had a talk with Enlik and micia three days ago on IRC.
Somehow we came to SQL databases and Enlik pointed me, that Entropy is
using SQLite.
I know, that maybe the mailing list is not the right place for asking
this, but you can read my reasons below.

For now, I would like to know the reasons, why SQLite was preferred
instead of other SQL databases (you know, MySQL, PostgreSQL and so
on).
I know from learning python, that python supports SQLite natively, but
Enlik mentioned some other reasons:
[Saturday, 20. Oktober 2012] [23:43:45 GMT+2] Enlik: [...] sqlite is
small, has good support for python, doesn't require any daemon running
(!) - it's just a file on disk - and thus, very safe against cases
when a daemon crashes and Entropy would be in trouble; also, small and
well supported.

However, he is interested in comparing SQLite to other database
management systems concerning to performance.

Why I'm asking?
Well, I thought, it may be useful to documentate the developers'
choices somewhere. Maybe on the wiki. And a mailing list is rather
searchable than IRC. Or is there stored an IRC log somewhere? For
people like me, who are interested in how and why Sabayon works like
it does.

2012/10/20 Kevin Chadwick ma1l1i...@yahoo.co.uk:
I would like to confirm though as I ideally want to stay clear of the bloated
(much pointless and more complex) systemd that Sabayon will likely support
Openrc for a long time if not forever even if the default is switched before
I invest some time in migrating installation scripts etc..

I digged the discussion here on the mailinglist out for you:

Re: [sabayon-dev] zfs.ko not in sys-kernel/linux-hardened-3.5-r3

2012-10-01 Thread Andre Jaenisch
Affects me, too.
I saw those messages to, when updating my kernel from 3.2 to 3.5.
How can I provoke those error messages?

andre@sabayon ~ $ ls /lib/modules/
3.2.0-sabayon 3.5.0-sabayon
andre@sabayon ~ $ find /lib/modules/ -name 'zfs'
/lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/kernel/fs/zfs
/lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/kernel/fs/zfs/zfs

Maybe it's gone, now ...

Andre

2012/9/28 Mohan R mohan...@gmail.com:
 Hi,

When I updated my kernel from 3.4 to hardened-3.5-r3, grub2 showed some
 strange error during grub.cfg creation,

Failed to load ZFS module stack.
Load the module manually by running 'insmod location/zfs.ko' as root.

when I installed sys-fs/zfs, it also pulled
 sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-3.5-r7. I don't care about zfs, but I just
wanted to install hardened instead of regular kernel. It seems, as per
 the release notes (http://sabayon.org/release/press-release-sabayon-10)
hardened-3.5-r3 should have zfs.ko, but its not there.

 $ ls /lib/modules
 3.2.0-sabayon 3.4.0-sabayon 3.5.0-hardened 3.5.0-sabayon
 $ find /lib/modules -name 'zfs*'
 /lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/kernel/fs/zfs
 /lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/kernel/fs/zfs/zfs
 /lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/kernel/fs/zfs/zfs/zfs.ko
 /lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/addon/zfs
 /lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/addon/zfs/zfs
 /lib/modules/3.5.0-sabayon/addon/zfs/zfs/zfs.ko
 $

Anyway I moved on to 3.5-r7 and there is no problem updating grub.cfg. I
don't know whether this is a bug or not, but just want to inform.

 Thanks,
 Mohan R
