[riot-devel] [GSOC] Introduction

2015-03-12 Thread Francesco Ermini
Hi,

my name is Francesco Ermini, and I'm student in electronics and
telecommunication engineering at the University of Florence,Italy.

My current Ms.C. thesis is about IoT secure communications. Our testbed is
made by some UDOO Quad boards, with Linux + RiOT as operating systems (the
UDOO can host two OSes at once).
I checked the GSOC ideas page, and I found the Bluetooth Low Energy driver
one. Although interesting, using BTLE wouldn't rally match my current work.
However, we also found that the XBee shield is not yet supported in RiOT
(open bug / feature request). This would match a bit more my thesis work,
and my (evil) tutor would be happier.

My question is: what about implementing the XBee driver (including the
dynamic security keys setup) ?

Best regards,

Francesco

 Hi everyone,

we are happy to announce that RIOT was selected as mentoring open source
organization for Google Summer of Code 2015.

In short: this means that students are welcome to apply for (paid) project
work in this context, to further develop RIOT, over the summer. For more
 details see [1].

Don't hesitate to forward this call for applications to students you know
who may be interested in RIOT, and/or to apply if you are a student
 yourself!

Student application opens March 16th and closes March 27th. But note that
if you plan to apply, we recommend that you come forward even before this
period, to share/shape ideas for your project (see process/templates
below). Basically: you should engage a technical discussion with the RIOT
community on devel@riot-os.org, as soon as possible.

Templates for applications form can be found at [2], and GSOC project
ideas for RIOT can be found at [3]. Note that these are just suggestions,
and that you are welcome to propose your own project ideas!

 Cheers,

 Emmanuel

2015-03-12 Thread Emmanuel Baccelli
Hi Joakim,

As far as I understood, it goes like this.
RIOT ranks the students that apply.
Google decides N students are funded for RIOT.
In the end, the N first ranked students are selected for GSOC 2015.

Best,
Emmanuel

Re: [riot-devel] Introduction and Getting Started

2015-03-12 Thread Hiesgen, Raphael
Hello Shantanu,

Could you provide me some more information or resources that would help get a
deeper insight about the project and get started.

the idea is to use the C++ Actor Framework for programming, which can be found
on Github [1]. However, RIOT support is still in development at the moment, see
the topic/caf [2] and topic/riot [1] branches. For now, you can use actors on
the board, but the network communication is not implemented (yet).

We are using the stm32f4discovery boards for testing CAF and C++. The board
does not have a transceiver. Maybe someone else can help with that. The r-idge
[3] USB dongles enable 6lowpan on desktop hardware, raspberry pis and similar
devices.

To begin with, I recommend to get the actors and their work flow running on
desktop first before moving to embedded devices. This eases debugging and helps
to get familiar with CAF.
Alternatively you can get a bit into RIOT and, for example, get some LEDs
blinking.
